One of the best explanations of why prototyping a design is important by Young Kim, of Microsoft Hardware. via jayki When you prototype “you will have made all the big mistakes, so your customers don’t have to go through that pain.”

Yes, there is a book on paper prototyping! It's "The practical guide on using paper prototyping when designing user interfaces". The author provides free sample chapters on the website.

The premise of this book hits home to the reason I started doing paper prototypes as a contract UI Developer. I found by simply showing the end users what their requirements look like we often solve key problems before a line of code or markup is ever written! By getting early feedback you are able to save so much time down the road.
