“Donald Trump. He really didn’t know what people go through. I think this whole thing is just for show. Like it doesn’t even seem like a campaign, it just seems like reality TV. And if he really becomes President, we’re going to be in trouble.”

Incredibly touching but never schmaltzy, this documentary follows students trying to give themselves a future – and the stakes have never been higher

American High School Documentary:
“They’ve probably been saying this for years and years, but it starts with our generation. And even if it’s just a small portion, then that still matters.”
More than nine million people tuned in to the first episode of Sir David Attenborough's Planet Earth II, overnight ratings show.
Pete Doherty on writing (There Are No Innocent Bystanders Documentary)
I think this documentary is particularly important right now. The rise of far right populist parties across the Western world raises inevitable concerns for the safety of ‘people of colour.’ Most notably Trump’s electoral victory has prompted a hysteric response from those across the political sphere.
Liberals and centrists in particular have expressed contempt at the prospect of a xenophobic and racist president with an extensive history of sexual violence towards women. While I do not doubt that the safety of ethnic ‘minorities’ and vulnerable communities is inevitably threatened by the 2016 election results I wonder if in part, there is a blindness to the existing racism. The cop watchers and activists featured in this documentary draw attention to the interactions between the Black community and the Police in New York. This frequently involves deaths of unarmed men, arbitrary arrests and discriminatory incarcerations and points to the disturbing reality that already exists for Black and Brown people in the U.S.
CBBC's first documentary about a transgender person has picked up a children's BAFTA.
“I can’t be doing these things. I know my mom will want me to take care of her and stuff. I saw tears come out of her eyes.” American High School, BBC3
“Opportunity depends on your circumstance”
“I’m kind of proud of myself but… Getting into college and being able to pay for that college while you’re there are two different things.
“The tuition on average in America is around $30,000-$40,000 for a year. And that’s just tuition, that’s not including the room and board and fees and books.”

This was an amazing, sensitive piece of filmmaking. It’s not live at the moment, but there are clips here.
