Hi, I'm new to your blog and read your last post on attempts at 'communism' in practice. You referenced 'imperialism' / 'historical poverty' and said it hasn't really been applied in a developed capitalist country. Could you please elaborate further? Sorry if this has already been done!

Each of those in turn:

1. Capitalist powers have actively sabotaged every attempt at socialism since the Paris Commune of 1871. Any situation that might represent a challenge to capitalist class relations is wholeheartedly opposed by the world bourgeoisie, and they have historically mobilized reactionary violence to quell attempts at socialism.

2. In addition, most attempts at socialism have been in countries that have had western imperialism impeding on their society, resources, and infrastructure. This impoverishes the people and makes it more difficult to get a viable socialism off the ground.

3. It is an accepted idea among many leftists that a country ought to go through late-stage capitalism before it can have “successful” socialism – or at least have a situation where an upper-income country goes through a socialist revolution and then they can subsequently aid the formerly early-stage capitalist country. I’m up in the air on that idea (as I don’t like the idea of telling workers, “wait, stop, you have to have more decades of class stratification before you can organize against the system”), but I do think there’s a certain truth to the idea that a country needs to build up its infrastructure to the level of moderate automation before it can easily manage workers-control-production/for-need socialism and communism. At this point the United States REALLY needs to undergo social revolution so that the heart of the empire is unable to crush attempts elsewhere. We’re at the point where socialism and communism can be viable around the world if we can just dismantle western imperialism.

That’s a very simplified summary of the ideas. It ties into historical materialism as well, and you could write a tome on that. Hope this helped in some way!

Red Lotus Lake, located in Kumphawapi, Thailand, is most beautiful in the low season between February and November, when the flowers are in full bloom. The water can only be visited on wooden boats which are hired out by the locals. This lake is also home to around 80 species of bird which includes the endangered grey heron, purple heron, and black kite.

Being half white I take offense to that. Not all white people are terrorist so I’m not normalizing terrorism. Why would you group all white people together as terrorist. Yeah some of us shoot up schools and gun down innocent African Americans, and even try to use chemical warfare against Native Americans on their own land for protecting water but not all white people are like that!

Not sure if I agree with everything raised although Chomsky’s analysis is always appreciated. The issue regarding third party voters is that Chomsky assumes that voters distinguish between the risks of a Trump vs Clinton presidency.

I used to feel torn when I received the e-mail petitions circulating for the last few years in defense of Afghan women under the Taliban, I was not sympathetic to the dogmatism of the Taliban; I do not support the oppression of women, But the provenance of the campaign worried me, I do not usually find myself in political company with the likes of Hollywood celebrities, I had never received a petition from such women defending the right of Palestinian women to safety from Israeli bombing or daily harassment at check-points, asking the United States to reconsider its support for a government that had dispossessed them, closed them out from work and citizenship rights, refused them the most basic freedoms. Maybe some of these same people might be signing petitions to save African women from genital cutting, or Indian women from dowry deaths,However, I do not think that it would be as easy to mobilize so many of these American and European women if it were not a case of Muslim men oppressing Muslim women—women of cover for whom they can feel sorry and in relation to whom they can feel smugly superior.
