Juan was confident that he could hypnotise Raúl. He told Raúl that the deal was that, if he couldn’t hypnotise him, Juan would be Raúl’s slave for a week. If he could, Raúl would be Juan’s slave for a week. Raúl happily agreed - that’s no way Juan could do that.
Juan began swinging his pocket watch in front of Raúl’s eyes. As part of the bet, Raúl had to follow along.
“That’s it, just focus on the watch as it swings back and forth”
In just a few moments, Raúl knew that he wouldn’t be able to look away if he tried. Juan saw that Raúl’s brother Luis was also focusing on the watch. He had a blank expression and Juan knew he was going into a trance too.
“Just keep following… you can’t take your eyes off the watch…. you’re beginning to get sleepy”
“…sleepy…” Raúl mimicked absently.
Raúl knew Juan was right. He could feel his eyelids closing and only opening to look at the watch. He knew that he was losing this bet but he couldn’t bring himself to care. His eyes were just following the watch back and forth, and listening to the pleasant sound of Juan’s voice.
“Sleep” Juan ordered. Raúl felt his eyes close. He didn’t realise that his brother Luis’ eyelids shut too, both were now entranced.
“Raúl, you are now completely hypnotised. You will do whatever I tell you. When I tell you to sleep, you will sleep. When I give you an order you’ll obey. You like being hypnotised. For now, wake up!”
Raúl opened his eyes and knew he had lost. He smiled “Okay man. You got me. I guess I’m your slave for a week.”
“A week? No. You’re going to be my slave for good.”
Raúl kept smiling and inside he now truly felt that Juan could just do that. He tried playing it cool.
“Oh man, you know you don’t have to do that” he said smiling, “you know I’m good to -”
The word hit Raúl instantly and he fell into a deep hypnotic sleep, ready to obey.
“Now Raúl, like I said, you’re going to be my slave for good and I am your Master. You will do whatever I tell you without hesitation. Do you understand?”
“Good boy - now to finish with your brother” Juan said, turning his attention to the blank-faced Luis.
