The darkening sky above ushered many of Lambda’s denizens into their homes, for the streets would soon become dangerous as the delinquents, thugs, and other criminal sorts hung around, glaring at anyone who so much as looked in their direction, assaulting anyone who had the misfortune of one misstep. Such things weren’t uncommon in most cities, but Lambda was especially prone, as the ongoing conflict attracted so many of the sorts who partook in such vile activities. It was increasingly becoming something that could only be described as a nest of chaos, as the many factions littered around the city butted their heads in ceaseless battle for who could overtake it first.
Yet, the threat of being jumped didn’t stop a certain informant from strolling down the street, which seemed largely deserted anyways, hands resting so casually in his pockets. Indeed, he was a far stretch from anything akin to frightened. Even the lowliest of riff-raff knew better than to deal with the man called Izaya Orihara, and those who didn’t would quickly learn. Though not too keen on the finer points of battling, he was sharp and refined enough to hold his own in most cases. Still, even with that being the case, he wasn’t so foolish as to do anything that would make him an easy target. Even now, he was heading back towards his apartment after finishing up with one of his appointments. But he came to a halt as, suddenly, he heard excited shouts echoing down the walls of a yawning dark alley. Someone must have pissed off the wrong person. As for just what was going on, well, Izaya couldn’t prevent the spark of curiosity from flickering to life.
After ensuring that the flick-blade he kept on-hand was still tucked securely in the hidden pocket contained within his sleeve, Izaya ventured down the alley, led on by the delectable sound of conflict. The sight that met him after rounding the corner was one shocked-looking boy with his back against the wall, surrounded by some mean-looking thugs.
“You don’t mess with the Hell Hounds!” the one in the middle barked, stepping even closer to the boy. By the looks of things, he had taken charge of the small group of four here, and most likely had been the one to pick out their victim tonight.
“Yeah!” chirped the one immediately to the leader’s left. “Ya had some real nerve, y'know, walkin’ that fast around Dane here! Jeez, it’s like you were tryin'a pick a fight!” The cackling laughter that followed was interrupted by an “Ow!” when the leader – who evidently went by “Dane” – punched the other guy’s arm.
“You’re annoying,” Dane growled, then fixed his glare back on the hapless boy they were ganging up on. “Beagle’s right, though. You don’t just get to go prancing around as you please. You’re dog food now!” He lifted his arm then, ready to punch the boy’s lights out, but just then–
“I wasn’t aware the Hell Hounds were associated with bullies!”
That single line sliced through the air, making Dane balk in his movement as he and the others turned to the man who had spoken so brazenly. Izaya was a far stretch from anything like chivalrous. On the other hand, it was extraordinarily rare for him to act in the interest of others. Regardless, he stood his ground in the alley, meeting the eyes of the sneering Hell Hound leader. The other two were unmoving, probably trying to comprehend what was going on.
“What’s your business here?” the leader intoned.
Izaya shrugged as he stepped out from the shadows, where he had been hiding until now. “Business?” he asked, laughing at the notion. “No, no, you have the wrong idea! I was just passing by and heard your scuffle from the street out there. Well, this is just a warning, by the way, but you might wanna be careful of that. What would you do if someone called the cops out here?” At that, Dane averted his gaze, evidently shaken by the realisation. As Izaya had thought, these guys were newbies, eager to make their mark on a city crawling with other criminals.
“Actually,” the informant went on, pulling a flip-phone from his pocket, “I could call the cops out here, too. I wonder how fast they could get a dispatch out here…” He didn’t even have to begin dialling the Lambda Police Department before Dane charged at him, frenzied by the threat. However, Izaya slid past him effortlessly and brought the phone up to his ear once he finished punching in the number. “Hello, I would like to report a crime. It’s here on–”
“C-come on, we’re going!” Dane yelled to his underlings before taking off back down the alley in full sprint. The other three scrambled after him, afraid of being caught by the incoming cops.
“Ah, it looks like the problem cleaned itself up, after all,” Izaya said, and flipped the phone shut again. He exhaled a sigh, and then started walking over to the boy who had just witnessed everything. He didn’t really look like the type who’d intricate themselves in this city’s affairs, but looks could sometimes be deceiving. “Are you okay?”
It was rather unfortunate, the situation that Hajime had found himself tied up in. How was he supposed to know that so much as trying to get home a little faster would somehow annoy a gang? A gang he had no previous encounter with, mind you. He just wanted to get home to his apartment.
The leader of the gang just happened to be in the same street. Just walking around him was the best idea, rather than telling him to walk faster, or so it seemed. Before Hajime knew it, he was being threatened, and he didn’t want to wait and see if they were just empty threats, and so he took off at a sprint down the street, rounding corners absent-mindedly, only focusing on escape.
Of course, that could only get Hajime so far, and before he knew it, his back was against the wall, with the members of the gang closing in on him.
He didn’t bother trying to listen to what they were saying. Instead, he waited for an opening so he could bolt again. It seemed like it was taking forever, and as soon as Hajime began worrying that it would never happen, an unfamiliar voice drifted to his ears from the other end of the dead end alley.
He turned to look at who it was. He didn’t seem to be a good samaritan, but Hajime couldn’t deny that anyone who would call the cops and save him from being jumped by a gang couldn’t be necessarily out to harm him. The gang members scurried away and Hajime pushed himself off of the wall, shaking off his fear-induced tension. Naturally, he didn’t drop his guard completely.
“Yeah. I’m alright,” Hajime answered. Can’t say I’d be if you came a bit later, though. “A little shaken up, maybe. Thank you.” He paused, looking around and realizing he had run right into what seemed to be gang territory, a place he avoided like the plague. Actually, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was running... I don’t have any idea where I am.”

Walking around this area always set Yata at unease. Then again, an area didn’t need to look shady for there to be shady people. He’d known all too well that a fight could break out anywhere and that some boozed up asshole would lunge at him just because a glance was considered “looking at me wrong”. Man, he hated drunks. Hated the people who thought they were so strong because they were in a gang and could take him on one-on-one just because he looked frail or something. He wouldn’t even get into how many times he’d been called a high schooler and shooed away from a fight because they didn’t want to end up in trouble.
He always made a show of cracking his knuckles as loudly as possible, eyes narrowing into the deadliest glare he could muster so no one would even think on underestimating him. So when someone called out and with him being so on edge and all, obviously he whipped around, glaring daggers at so-and-so and looking like the world’s deadliest chihuahua about to attack someones ankles. “Hah?!”
Oh. Well this guy looked like one of those nerdy high school kids who were so smart they got paid for tutoring their peers. Hardly seemed the type to be trying to pick a fight. And what had he just been thinking about appearances could be deceiving? Not that anyone asking for directions could possibly be leading him into a trap. Well, he sort of did have a soft spot for kids, even though he looked as if he could be about his age.
“Oh, uh, the apartments?” He scratched his head, his fierce demeanor washing away in an instant as he quirked his eyes quizzically at the other. “Gonna have ta be more specific than that. There’s a few around here.”
Hajime would be lying if he said he wasn’t a little surprised by the rather unanticipated glare that struck him when the person spun to face him. He couldn’t help but jump back a little, suddenly feeling a biiiiit too close. Maybe he should’ve asked someone else. Before he could retract his question and seek out someone else, the guy seemed to relax visibly and Hajime did the same, but decided to keep his guard up, even though it wasn’t as if he looked particularly malevolent.
“Oh... right,” Hajime began, mentally scolding himself for completely forgetting the existence of the other apartments. “Uh, the Libra Apartments” Hajime felt too uneasy to sleep well at night there, but it wasn’t like he could afford the Capricorn condos. “I wandered a little too far today.” His excuse sounded pathetic even to his own ears. But was it alright to trust this guy? Well, he’d just have to wait and see. He would’ve tried something by now, surely.

Hajime groaned, more than a little upset at himself. Of all the days, he picked today, a particularly hot one, to try and get familiar with his surroundings. For some reason, he decided that he’d have confidence in his own navigation abilities and left the map he had of the city at his apartment, telling himself ‘I’ll never learn the layout of the city if I keep relying on that map!’
What a mistake that turned out to be.
However, he could at least know to stay clear of areas that seemed dilapidated. Those were always kinda creepy, anyway. But as the sun began to set, Hajime realized that he really needed to find his way back home before nightfall. Luckily, there was someone nearby who seemed harmless enough. Maybe they could help direct him?
“Oh, hey!” he called, hoping to get their attention. “Could you help me out? I don’t really have an idea of the way back to the apartments from here...” Note to self: never do this again.
