I feel intimidated because I'm a newbie and I suck at dancing but it's so much fun but I also want to cry when I go to class because I feel like everyone is better than me and I'll never be a dancer or get to pointe because I'm ugly and my belly sticks out

a) i doubt you're ugly. ugly isn't even a real thing, we are all in God's imageb) "never" isn't a real thing either. if you're trying your hardest and being kind (not overbearing) the people in your class will overlook your technique/history deficiency, & you won't have to worry about it. if they DO make fun of you or look down on you, show them up. practice 100X harder. you WILL be great. you already are!c) no worries. dance is about art, not trophies. as long as you love it, it doesn't matter how new you are!

hey this is that anon who just started ballet and you said to keep updated so here I am. I got delayed for starting class because I was out sick (if untreated it could've been fatal) so I can't start till fall. I'm excited though and I'm using this time to eat healthier so I can dance better

I actually had the same (sort of) delay situation and haven't been studio dancing for a year next month. it's awesome that you've been using this time for such a good purpose. you should watch fed up on Netflix!!

What do you think of people saying dance isn't hard, athletic, or a sport?

sometimes, the arguments can be well-rounded and make a lot of sense, or at least seem like it, with what little information people have about dance or being a dancer. i had one conversation with a guy who said “it isn’t a sport, it’s an art. you go to any school for football, you have to go to art schools for dance.”

as lame as that is, it actually makes sense. we portray dance as easy. we are taught to look graceful, and to make everything look as easily done as possible. we learn to be light on our feet and to ignore pain, so that would leave any uneducated person to believe that it is as it looks: easy.

BUT that’s not the case. dance requires energy, strength, athleticism...i can’t easily compare it to other sports (no sport is easy, and it kind of ruins an argument to say ‘dance is hard. all you do in football is throw a ball.’ don’t dumb down another sport to make yours look bigger.)

any way you slice it, dance is HARD WORK. & if they don’t want to accept that, let them try it themselves :) nbd, don’t let it stop you!

Everyone is mad about the Xkit guy basically being forced off tumblr, but the more posts I see on the matter, I get the feeling we’re mad for the wrong reason.

“Damn it, idiots flung around a rumor and Xkit Guy had a breakdown and now my xkit won’t be updated. Damn it, this new tumblr update will just be sucky forever. We brought this on ourselves.” Is basically how I read these posts.

We should be saying “holy shit this website singlehandedly destroyed a man’s life because of unfounded rumors of sexual assault which is a SERIOUS THING but now this guy, who was INNOCENT, had a mental break and nobody on this website is facing any actual repercussions for something that, anywhere else, is a crime. Because false testimony/accusations is a crime.”

But nah lets just care because tumblrs broke again and he’s the only guy able to fix it. That’s why we should care, right?

I got cast in my school's production of Pippin as a principal dancer. I've never been a principal dancer before and I don't have much dance experience, especially in jazz/Fosse. Also, I'm a very awkward person and Fosse is all about being smooth and sexy and basically the opposite of me. I'm also not very flexible. Rehearsals start this week. Any advice?

you’re a totally different person on stage no matter who you’re portraying. it’s all about the art of forgetting. when you are on that stage, ‘awkward’ isn’t even in your vocabulary, deal? you got this. put your confidence in God, don’t worry about it! control your character, don’t lose your focus! just practice! maybe even practice the attitude outside of the studio, evolve yourself as a person as you go along in the dance world! it’ll help you tons, i promise! let me know how this all goes!!
