Sonic had never quite understood why he felt so hesitant and strange, about the thought of apprehending Robotnik. Given everything he had done; the amount of lives he had caused in regards to suffering. Still, even if Sonic didn’t think on it consciously, he still tried to defend it in some way,

“Shadow, he was pardoned for a lot of those crimes. Unless you’re sayin’ that GUN ain’t holdin true to that,” He didn’t get why it felt so important to him; but how Shadow was talking about Robotnik – Ivo – was kinda ticking him off.

“You shouldn’t just throw ‘im in jail, or anythin. He has helped save earth, and— I mean, I can and will stop or handle whatever he tosses at us, so just tell GUN to cool it.”

The defensiveness certainly made Shadow’s lips curl slightly. Where was this coming from? Sonic fought toe-to-toe with Robotnik to realize the ruthlessness the man demonstrated -- and yet, here he went, covering for him as if they never witnessed him threaten space-time.

❝... Do you know the reason why he has helped to save Earth?❞

And believe me, it is not for the interest of its citizens.

“Well hell, good buddy, when you put it that way I feel almost bad I got nothin’ to tell ya.” It wasn’t like Sonic was taking this all smiles and peaches; sure he was giving off that air, but. He just sorta figured that there wasn’t any point in over-worrying about it. Another shrug of his shoulder, he pat Shadow on the back, his gloved hand gingerly touching the quills along Shadow’s backside momentarily,

“Tell ya what, I’ll do some digging. See what old Robotnik’s been up to. If I hear or figure out anything, I’ll letcha know. You’n Rouge aren’t the only ones good at snooping up secrets, ya know.”

The pat on the back made Shadow almost feel like Sonic was being patronizing toward him, but he knew the blue hedgehog to simply be earnest -- and as a result, he moved very little when the gesture reached him. His only nonverbal response manifested in crossing his arms and glancing to the side, a sigh leaving his lips.

❝That would be beneficial,❞ he agreed after a moment. ❝The more ears are open, the more information is caught.❞ His eyes landed back on Sonic evenly. ❝G.U.N would prefer for him to be behind bars for the crimes he has committed. Unfortunately, many of its armed forces are not capable of handling any of his armadas. While I would be able to take much of it out, single-handedly,❞ certainly a boast, but it’s stated so matter-of-fact that it didn’t quite come off that way, ❝they have been relegating me to infiltration, instead.❞

He didn’t want to say out loud that they still feared the power that he possessed and the possibility of him losing control, but he doubted that Sonic would glean otherwise from what he’d just said.

❝As a result,❞ he continued, spending very little deliberation on that subtext, ❝it makes any information that can be obtained especially important so he can finally be detained. Is my urgency clearer now?❞

“Sounds like a pretty swanky mission, good buddy. They got you on the up’n’up?” Gingerly teasing, Sonic nudged lightly at Shadow’s side, a small chuckle leaving him. Though, it trailed off as Sonic considered what Shadow had mentioned about Robotnik. Humming, he scratched at the side of his own head again,

“Robotnik’s always planning something. Whatever it is, I ain’t too worried. We’ve brought him down before, we’ll do it again! Anyway, I hope that you have fun on your mission; whatever it is.”

❝At great cost in multiple situations,❞ Shadow grunted. He definitely wasn’t taking this as easily as Sonic was. ❝G.U.N seeks to prevent another world-wide catastrophe. The last one nearly resulted in the dissolving of space-time.❞ Granted, then the on-us hadn’t been entirely resting on Robotnik’s shoulders; but to suggest that he did not play a contributing factor would be naive, at best.

❝I am going to assume you have no information to provide, given that sign-off.❞ The striped hedgehog sighed.

❝If anything, that would make me more suspicious,❞ Shadow mused. ❝Being silent for so long... Would that not suggest he’s potentially planning something?❞

After all, he did practically come out of the woodwork in the last adventure that they’d embarked on.

❝Regardless, I may be placed on reconnaissance. That may not go anywhere if there’s no lead on where he may be.❞ The red-striped hedgehog stared at the other expectantly, as if assuming that he may have an answer to that one.

The mischievous look on Sonic’s face was unparalleled- he was certainly taking a lot of pride in embarrassing Shadow like this. The blue hedgehog kept his smirk, moving past Shadow. He picked up one of the Chao who was making grabby hands toward Shadow, promptly forcing the little guy into his arms. “Oh, c’mon you wouldn’t do that to your kiddos, would y’?” The snark was definitely still there, and definitely still strong.

He walked past Shadow again, taking a seat next to the crowd of Chao, staring at all of them as they whined for their “papa”. There was a shimmer in Sonic’s eyes that made his smirk falter a bit into a more genuine smile as he looked over them. But soon enough the challenging grin returned as he shifted his look back over to Shadow.

“Never expected to find you here. But don’t let me get in the way of your bonding time.”

Oh, Shadow already knew what Sonic was attempting to do -- to rile him up and to embarrass him. And unfortunately, it was working... Somewhat. He found it difficult to get too angry in as tranquil backdrop as the Chao Garden, but he certainly felt himself tempted to break a rule or two. Especially when the blue hedgehog shoved the Chao into his arms. “Be careful with him,” he snapped, just as Sonic traipsed over to the other Chao and took himself a seat with stage presence.

He failed to notice the brief look that the blue hedgehog took on his face; if he had, then maybe he’d be a bit more sympathetic in his response. As it was, he gently set down the Chao that he was carrying to make his way over to Sonic, his expression nothing short of unimpressed. “Yes, well, there’s not much you can expect from me, regardless. You don’t know me.” Well, now that he’s caught, he was going to defend his integrity. Huff huff. “There’s nothing wrong with taking care of Chao. It’s a better use of my time than yours, futzing around and running about like a chicken with its head cut off.”

He’s just blowing off steam, don’t take it personally, Sonic.

Sonic wasn’t normally one to watch someone without making his presence known, but there was just something that felt incredibly weird about seeing Shadow in a Chao garden.

It seemed entirely out of place. This red and black hedgehog amongst these friendly colors- or just… Shadow. It was hardly describable. Was it really so strange, so out of character to see Shadow like this? Sonic couldn’t think of any real reason that Shadow shouldn’t be here. Nothing in his personality really said it was wrong for Shadow to be here.

It just felt weird. Out of place, but not out of character.

So, Sonic resolved that it was odd but wasn’t necessarily tease worthy… But that wouldn’t stop the blue blur from having his usual snark.

He came out of the cave entrance, into the light, approaching Shadow from the back. He’d get as close as possible without being noticed before he revealed himself.

“Come here often?”

Shadow really hadn’t expected to have any company -- and that showed in the way that he jolted from the blue hedgehog’s voice behind him, making his body stiffen. Stirred from his thoughts, the red-striped hedgehog let out a slow breath as he turned around, finding the source of the voice: Sonic, and he apparently looked more than a little amused.

The urge to huff had risen, but he managed to swallow it down and stifle; it wasn’t as if Sonic asked him an unreasonable question, after all, even if his tone irked him for some reason. “I’m only briefly stopping by,” he murmured, voice controlled and maybe a touch grouchy. He’d already begun to lift to his feet, head partly turned away from the other hedgehog. “Simply...wanted to check on them.”

It was clear that he was thoroughly embarrassed enough from this exchange that he was attempting to leave already, despite the cries and protests from the Chao themselves, not wanting their caretaker to go. Their caretaker who clearly spoiled them, too, given the amount of fruits and Drives lying about.

It depended on one’s perspective whether it was strange seeing Shadow there, spending time with the Chao within the Chao garden. Surrounded by the peaceful silence that cropped up from an isolated area with nothing but little creatures to keep him company, the black hedgehog himself remained silent save for the occasional soft question directed at the little creatures. At this present time he was offering one a fruit that he managed to gather from one of the trees in the area, watching carefully as it devoured it with a happy coo leaving it. He offered it a gentle pet on the head, ears flicking back at the enthusiasm that it demonstrated at the attention.

He might be musing a bit too much on small life like this to notice any additional company that may have been granted at this present time. Might be.
