misdirection from yr body language you don't want me no
On your jerky post one of your comments is about the chipped key in cars being... unreasonably priced. Is there a legal "I own it so I changed it" way around those?
I own it so I can do whatever the fuck I want to it. So whatever I do to it is legal, Toyota has no right to determine what kinds of keys I use or where I get them from. And even if it did, fuck them.
I’m going to order two unprogrammed keys from the internet and take them to a good locksmith and have them cut and I’m going to follow the instructions either in this article or in the Haynes manual that I ordered to program the other fobs.
And then I’m going to pry out the fucking transponder chip from one of those keys and superglue it to the casing on my steering column so that if I need more keys cut I can just have them cut from metal blanks.
And hopefully that whole process will cost me around $100 instead of the NEARLY FIVE FUCKING HUNDRED DOLLARS the dealership quoted me for ONE key.
“I can come down as low as one eighty on the key” “Oh, it’s a good thing you already have a programmed key because programming it is an additional hundred dollar fee”
You motherfucker “programming” consists of unlocking the key and fiddle-fucking around with the ignition for less than a minute, this is a ten-year-old used car that I bought because I’m fucking broke.
This is part of why I’m so against “smart” technologies - they largely aren’t used to help the consumer, they’re used to apply DRM access rules to the physical world that we interact with.
This transponder thing is supposed to be an anti-theft measure but I’m guessing if you looked at the history of how many car thefts the transponder has prevented versus how many replacement keys users got up-charged FIVE FUCKING HUNDRED DOLLARS for I’m thinking that Toyota comes out way, way ahead of where the car thieves would have in terms of profit.
You know what’s an anti-theft measure that works to prevent your vehicle from getting stolen but doesn’t cost five fucking hundred dollars? A steering wheel lock. You know what’s even better if you’re paranoid? A battery disconnect.
This is the same kind of aggro I get about chipped print cartridges and proprietary water filters for refrigerators and shit. No. Fuck you, motherfuckers. Not today, satan.
I AM ALSO ENOUGH OF AN ASSHOLE WITH ENOUGH ACCESS TO MACHINE TOOLS AND ENOUGH FAMILIARITY WITH REWIRING SHIT THAT I WILL STRAIGHT UP REPLACE IT. FUCK YOU TOYOTA, I’VE GOT A SATURN HANDY THAT’S ONLY GOOD FOR PARTS I WILL REPLACE THE WHOLE FUCKING CYLINDER, YOU MANKY DIPSHITS.
I know a guy whose Jeep was an unholy abomination that combined a corvette and a ford windstar with an XJ. I have done an ABS deletion and removed a wiper fluid reservoir to put in an aftermarket master cylinder so the brakes worked better. I have helped to put a Ford Bronco radiator into a Mazda truck.
Fuck your fucking transponder ignition lock bullshit.
Also my friends, I cannot tell you enough that it is worthwhile to learn how to fix computers or work on cars or fix your appliances. Once you know how much it really costs to do these things, or you know how to diagnose a problem, or you know how to PREVENT a problem you are never solely at the mercy of this bullshit ever again.
There are very few ways that I could fuck up this repair and have it cost MORE to have a more experienced mechanic fix than the dealer quoted me for ONE FUCKING KEY, so there’s no incentive for me to pay the dealer that much for one fucking key.
I’m reclaiming RTFM from shitty IT departments and recycling it as a call to revolution.
Read the manual!
DIY or die!
(like obviously I get that a lot of people don’t have the physical ability or the experience to do a lot of their own repairs but the point is that you should be able to repair your possessions within your own community without having to rely on the original manufacturer to keep it running and keep charging you money; you may not be able to repair your car but if your sister physically can and has the experience anything that prevents her from repairing your car through the use of arbitrary proprietary tools, batteries, microchips, or fucking iphone cables, should be resisted)
Just upping this for the RTFM bit but also:
This applies to appliances. Have a dishwasher that suddenly stops working/ A fridge on the fritz, dryer that is leaving things wet? Chances are its either a $10 fuse that’s busted or AT WORST the main circuit board running the dang thing frying out…but here’s the thing all those parts are out there waiting to be ordered and used by you the consumer. An appliance repair tech is gonna charge you $100 minimum just to come out and look at what’s wrong before they order that $10 part and charge you $50 for it plus labor. I’ve had three different fridges break on me, twice it was the main circuit board and for $50-60 and a little time with the manual I had a working fridge again. Read the manual, get familiar with using tools to get at things and don’t be afraid to try.
I’m curious: how do you tell what’s busted with appliances? With computers my primary approach if diagnostic software fails is “try to swap out the part for a different part of the same type”. which isn’t really feasible if you’re ordering fridge bits off the internet I guess
You know how when you’re tracking down a computer problem you sometimes find someone who had the exact same unanswered question posted on a forum in 2013?
Yeah, that generally doesn’t happen with appliances. It’s staggeringly easy to find instructions on how to replace your car’s radiator or the compressor for your fridge compared to how easy it is to debug and track down computer issues.
Also because they’re much, much simpler machines there’s a lot less that can go wrong. There are only, like, ten ways a washing machine can fail and they’re all pretty distinct compared to the infinite identical ways computers can fail with infinite different solutions you need to test.
It’s the difference between printer repair and printer networking: both suck but at least you can probably narrow down the physical source of a problem fairly easily because it’s probably rollers or the fuser since there’s just not that much else that it could be.

fall in love with your friends and i don’t mean crush on them but look at them like how you would look at the moon, write them bad poetry about how their freckles are like constellations, hold their hands and suprise them with flowers,, don’t limit adoration to romantic relationships
had a very surreal moment yesterday when my coworker and I were placing owl nesting boxes and he asked what my favorite show is
“I’m not sure,” I said. “I got really drawn into Twin Peaks when I first watched it, but I’m not sure if I’d consider it my favorite show.”
“Really?” he asked. “I’m surprised, I wouldn’t have pegged you as a Twin Peaks fan.”
“Why not?”
He shrugged a little and said, “I expected something nerdier—isn’t Twin Peaks a really jock show?”
That floored me. A jock show. Twin Peaks. Do jocks love Twin Peaks? Is this a stereotype I was previously unaware of? I suddenly want gym shorts that say “Twin Peaks is for jocks” across the ass.
Is David Lynch a jock director? Are his movies for jocks? I’m having a crisis. Is Dune for jocks? What’s happening?
