Please help me out; I need fellow autistics to speak out about this and give their input. (CW: Mention of Trump as a descriptor for something.)
I've been working on a concept for a Danganronpa-style game where the protagonist's talent is Autism Advocacy, and of course she's autistic. It's something I've been passionate about and since we're working on the autistic young adult community as part of my research assistant job, I think it could be beneficial to have something where older I know there are a lot of us in the fandom too, so I was hoping he could pay me for it; it could help me take control of my future financially. Sounds perfect, right?
Not according to my dad.
He thinks making a Danganronpa-style game with autistic characters is gonna get pushback or considered "Trumpian" (because autistic people are getting killed in it, which...that's how Danganronpa fucking works) and get pushback and doesn't want it as part of this autistic young adult community. So currently he won't support my efforts for it.
It feels like a stab in the heart to hear that; autistic characters are too often presented as sanitized versions of who we really are. Why should a game that centers autistic people--one that I get financial support for--have to be...clean? Why are we never allowed to be messy or angry or complex without being seen as problems or burdens or violent? Why do our portrayals always have to be seen as comfortable or palatable? How is that fair?
I need backup; I need fellow autistics to add their voices; maybe if he sees that there is a demand for this, that there is a need for it, then maybe he'll realize this passion project is worth paying me for.
