Both good contenders. Given the hoofed feet and horns, visually, the baron for sure. However as far as imposing presence, the cyberdemon( and I suppose uniqueness of character, making it stand out like the minotaur of the labyrinth, but my grasp of mythology is on the weaker side, alas). When you consider the Minotaur was a beast locked away in a maze of sorts for a lone man to go defeat, there are a few awesome parallels between that and E2M8/tower of babel, what with all the walls to take cover behind while you strafe-rocket-run. Not the most labyrinthine map in original Doom but oh well. The minotaur had sacrifices made to it, and the dismembered barons strung up in the room at the start of the level could be seen as that- I like a few fan theories where they were used to make the cyberdemon, like failed experiments, or another speculation I’ve seen that says there’s a ruthless, hostile hierarchy among monsters, and the barons are subservient to what lies beyond that room. Either way, I think they were interpreted the intended way by everyone- this is a warning of what you’re about to come up against. The top dog of the demonic realm. You thought the bruiser brothers were bad? Look at their kind now, pathetic creatures of meat and bone. You ain’t seen nothing yet.

✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?
WELL THE SOUNDTRACK FOR A START OF COURSE (more on that later!) but also because it feels like it was made for me. i’m a monster liker, and a robot liker, and i’m really into the crazy designs of some of the demons and the levels alike. i loved the look of the whole thing before i even got involved with it. one of my main aesthetics (i guess you could call it) which i’ve loved forever is the whole techy cybernetics thing. i wasn’t surprised to find that doom itself was in the very early stages going to be an alien (1979) themed fps. it’s a bit horror, a bit sci fi, a bit action. it’s all great. doom comprises all the things i like.
another endlessly interesting aspect is the modding community. i had very limited gaming experience until now, even less with coding, but i really admire how some people take the files and make the game into whatever they can imagine, sometimes putting in tons of work to a wad project. i’ve never seen anything like it before. it’s awesome.
📌 how did you find your hyperfixation?
death grips was my favourite band for a long time. i found a no love/bfg division mashup a while back now and- not being a huge metal fan yet and my one bit of knowledge of doom consisted of “yes! it runs improbably on everything!”- i had to hunt down more about this surprisingly groovy new sound. then Mr. Gordon sir blew my brain wide apart.
🎶 if your hyperfixation has songs/an ost, what is your favorite song from it?
is it stupid to say all of it? i don’t care. all of it. okay okay, highlights for me are: 2016- bfg division of course, but also rip and tear, cyberdemon, vega core, UAC report file (goes hard, very underrated) // eternal- meathook/slayer gates, icon of sin, command and control, hell on earth, cultist base (especially cuz i love found sound music and the presence of a lawnmower and chainsaw samples in here), doom hunter, gladiator
lots of favourites. lots of fun stuff. oh and all of the original doom 1 OST is iconic, so good that they never grate... even when i get hopelessly lost trying to find the exit or that one key, because my memory is atrocious and unable to memorize maps.
💢 what do you NOT like about your hyperfixation? is there something you would want to change about it?
it’s more what i would change about me- my flesh prison’s central processing unit does not do well with lots of square pixels.
for a long time i put off even attempting a doom playthrough, certain it would just give me intense eyestrain. i was right. i’d even thought about seeking out some kinda smooth doom mod to play instead? nah. you gotta go in raw. i did find it weirdly reassuring to hear that plenty of other people with more normal brains/eyesight than myself suffer too, even with nausea from motion sickness. i never heeded those “take a break every 15 minutes!” health warnings in the booklets from bargain bin playstation games when i was a kid. i feel like i’m experiencing a sort of karma from that now.
clearly i need a software upgrade to my neurons.exe. my nervous system DOES run doom, but only just.
🎥 do you have any favorite scenes from your hyperfixation?
doom eternal has a bunch of stimulating cutscenes. no i will not elaborate on what i mean by stimulating. command and control (the track) is sexy and so is the facility scene that accompanies it and that’s that on that. doomguy’s power... his influence... 😳🥵
