It’s sad that toxic game culture is so prevalent cuz like. As someone who has ended up in random matches with kids before, I can attest to how fucking easy it is to reverse and un-teach shitty attitudes in kids.

Example: I downloaded Friday the 13th because it’s free on psn. I dunno how to play, so I just enter quick play and I’m matched with 3-4 kids on mic. Immediately on mic they’re shitty and disparaging to each other. They laugh at each others deaths, they actively work against team mates and self sabotage, they call each other “fags”, etc. From the sounds of the voices they cannot be older than 13-14.

I put on my mic and just decide I ain’t havin it. I am nice. I thank them for barricading doors or leaving me items. When they break free from Jason’s grasp I say “good job!” or I try to help them. One kid survived for most of the match by himself. When he dies, I tell him he did a fantastic job.

The mood shift is practically INSTANT. These kids almost immediately stop being dick heads. They start encouraging each other and being kind. After the match all of them try to friend request me. Which should tell you a couple of things:

A) kids want to be kind, and they want to have a nice time playing games. But encounters with adults like me or so rare that they’ve trained themselves to instantly put on a toxic, shitty, defensive veneer when encountering any new person online. It’s literally just THAT EASY to not groom a horrible gaming community, it’s just that NO ONE does it.

B) the speed of which they all tried to friend me was cute, but paints for me such a sad picture? Like these kids are SO desperate to find people to play with who aren’t crappy jerks. They played with me for 10 minutes TOPS and all instantly tried to reach out to me.

tl;dr: The kids are alright. Adults are shit heads.

stop feeding your compulsion to actively seek out content that you know is upsetting.

I know from experience that it can be addicting because getting angry about stuff is just a good of a distraction as any. but it’s such a pointless, self destructive, and avoidable source of negativity in your life.

okay but why do people shit on One Piece so much?? Is it the goofy art, which never lacks a detailed background? Is it the main character who’s perceived as an idiot? Because it’s an anime maybe I guess? You’d think tumblr would be all over this show, seriously there are so many important things in One Piece like

* Canonically asexual main character

* Canonically bigender character

* No romance storylines. The characters go to the ends of the earth not for a romantic partner, but for friends

* Female characters who probably have more intricate and engaging pasts/dreams than the male characters’

* Female characters who can fight and take shit from no one

* Female character who is arguably the best at something (navigation) in the entire world

* Princess character who is never patronized/has her fighting abilities questioned because she is female, and is loved as a hero of her country

* Badass female pirate captain based on a legendary pirate who later became a queen, Awilda

* So many historical references

* Stories that will absolutely make you cry

* Hundreds of characters and a world that feels as fleshed out and real as Harry Potter’s world

* Men aren’t mocked for crying or showing affection for their male friends

* It shouts “FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS” from the bottom of its heart and soul and it makes you actually believe it, instead of feeding you a few corny lines and sending you on your way

Essentially One Piece is an emotional roller coaster and it is really fucking good, and this is coming from someone who pretty much doesn’t watch anime at all. Don’t hate on something simply because of the art style because that’s the dumbest thing ever and if that’s your biggest reason for hating something I don’t have respect for you.
