Let’s Stop This

Changing this very common behavior of littering starts with you, yourself. Each and every one of us should take responsibility for all our actions; no matter how small or big it is. Once we can take that responsibility to ourselves, then we can take that responsibility and influence others. Whether in your community, school, or even just in your house, you can influence people in being responsible with their trashes.

               Although we can’t really stop people from littering, but we can always help lessen this problem. Let’s not be one of the reasons why littering is getting worse. Let’s be one of those reasons why littering is slowly lessening, or better yet, be one of those reasons why littering will stop.

Be Aware

Seeing trash just lying around is inevitable. Everywhere we turn there is always that little piece of trash lying on the ground, waiting for someone to pick it up and throw it in the trash bin. I know that people notice those small pieces of trash but choose to ignore it, thinking that other people would just pick it up. But the problem is those people passing by next would think the same thing as well. So this thinking would just go on and on; a never ending cycle. Not unless someone would be considerate enough to actually pick up that piece of trash and just simply throw it in the proper place.

               We are aware of these things, but it is our choice that actual affects our environment and how littering would actually worsen. Being aware is not enough, we have to have the initiative to pick up those little pieces of trash; they may only be little pieces of trash, but once they start to gather, It might just be too late to clean them up.

Littering: A Problem in this Community

Litter is nothing but a piece of waste or rubbish that has been disposed improperly, without consent and at the wrong location. Littering simply means throwing away objects on the ground or leaving them lying on the ground instead of disposing them at a garbage can, recycling bin, or a trash container. This is one of the major problems in our community. Trashes are thrown in corners until it would already smell bad and it would be messy; people aren’t that disciplined in the community. The litter that is everywhere can be more harmful than anyone thinks.

It’s not something new that littering definitely affects the environment. Even the smallest trash could still harm the environment. Let’s say that a plastic bag goes into the canal or the sewers and waterways; what could possibly happen? Well, there would possibly be a blockage in the drainage system which would affect the flow of the canals, which would either slow down or stop the flow of water in the canal, causing for it to smell really bad and may be inhabited by mosquitoes.

Another harmful litter is the cigarette butts. Smokers throw these things casually not thinking of the consequences and the harm that it causes. Those cigarette butts may be small, but they can be very dangerous. You know what they say, “Small but terrible.”
