What extra painful is that Ch’en has every reason to feel like this. After witnessing the atrocities her uncle committed (authorizing the mass slaughter of Infected living in the slums and dumping their bodies in the sewers), she’s not wrong in feeling like she has no place in the city she loves. It’s home, but is it really? She swore to protect Lungmen, to look after its citizens, but to see how it treats people like her? How could she anymore? She can’t stay to fix the system from the inside, when the system is the root cause.

What she got wrong however besides breaking Hoshiguma’s heart, was believing that no one truly cares about her, which just isn’t true. The opening scene even made a point to show an unnamed LGD officer rushing to find Ch’en to hear her side of the story first, instead of immediately following the arrest warrant. For all the grief Wei gives her, he never wanted her to become a martyr. He doesn’t want his niece to die.

Fumizuki, Swire, Yuhsia, Bagpipe… of course people care about you, Ch’en. They don’t care that you’re Infected. But as long as the Infected continue to be persecuted, she will never feel like she belongs.

And Hoshiguma… when she’s already been so selfless with Ch’en, being selfish for once because she’s tired of losing loved ones… she doesn’t want to lose Ch’en too. She’s been through hell on her own, watched people leave her, and even ending the lives of those she knew because she was so steadfast in her conviction to protect others. What did it matter in the end, such unwavering ideals, if that meant destroying the ones she held dear? Where did that leave her? Alone. People’s lives taken away by time or by her own hands.

“I don’t deserve to live. But I’m still here. I just can’t live for myself anymore”. Desperately trying to hold onto Ch’en, to keep her safe, a bandage over Hoshiguma’s long since broken heart. And now she’s being left behind again.

thinking about the fact that hoshiguma doesn’t have scars and how important that actually is… she’s an oni, and by the powers of her bloodline she canonically doesn’t suffer injuries for any length of time. she’s even said it before to ch’en: “i’m an oni, those scratches are long gone by now.” she doesn’t get scars because she heals so fast that things don’t get a chance to leave a mark. this is clear in her official artwork, where her arms are exposed and unscarred.

except that hoshiguma does have a scar. just one. and that scar is significant because it was put there by ch’en. it’s not a normal wound from some mook– it’s an arts-infused injury inflicted on her by her best friend at the height of tensions, when the stakes were higher than they’ve ever been. where she is fighting to protect ch’en from making a decision she fears will get her killed. where she feels she has failed in her duty to serve her. that she has a single scar which does not heal, and that the scar is from the one person she loves most, the person she failed, is not to be understated. (also, between swire pointing out the use of arts and the episode 7 trailer wherein ch’en reaches for the sheath at her back during their confrontation, it is heavily implied that ch’en drew chi xiao against hoshiguma, meaning not only was ch’en extremely resolute in her intent to fight as hard as necessary, but she was also in a state where she paid no heed to the fact that she is dangerously unskilled with her arts, that she could have caused so much greater harm than she did, and to her best friend of all people.)

it matters. it matters narratively that the oni whose body can heal any wound, cannot heal this one. it matters that ch’en makes her bleed, and it matters that of all the places she could have wounded her, she aimed for hoshiguma’s face. that matters. it’s horrible, what ch’en did. and it’s tragic that it came to this point between them. that scar is a tragedy.
