What do bats need to make it in LA?
Explore urban bat habitat along the San Gabriel River, from water at the river, to food at an abandoned native plant garden, to shelter beneath a freeway bridge.
Fill out a map of our route with memories, sketches, and observations as we explore. We’ll use an ultrasonic bat detector to listen for bats overhead, look for signs of nocturnal wildlife, and learn how plants, insects, waterways, and even human-built structures come together to create habitat in the city.
At the end of the walk, flip and fold your map into a mini Be a Friend to Bats zine to take home.

Accessibility & terrain: This walk requires navigating approximately 2.5 miles of paved sidewalk and paved multi-use path. There will be an optional dirt-trail side quest for anyone who would like to get closer to the river. We’ll be walking after dark and stopping periodically along the route.
Please bring: closed-toe shoes, layers, a water bottle, a snack if needed, and a headlamp or flashlight. Safety hi-vis vests will be provided, and a limited number of headlamps and flashlights will be available to borrow.
No bat, art, or naturalist experience necessary. 🦇
