The Worst Witch Fandom & pairings
Hey ladss, just a forewarning, I may ramble here or, at times, come across rather harsh but i feel as though this is something I need to articulate.
Firstly, I myself have been involved in online fandom since I was 15, so, for the past six years or so, and in that time Iāve come across some amazing content, Iāve also stumbled upon some rather questionable, fucked up shit.
Iāve found The Worst Witch fandom to be full of kind, inclusive awesomely talented people and this post is not directed toward that vast majority. However, I think it is something we should all take note on.
I myself happen to ship Hicsqueak and no other pairing but I 100% respect anyone who ships Hecate with Ada, Dimity, Julie, a woman from the post-office, or anyone over the age of 18. I think the majority of the fandom are totally accepting of all consenting pairings and thatās great! Itās nice to be part of a community that doesnāt practice ship-bashing.
Letās just clarify this now. The age of consent in most countries is 18, therefore a person under that age CANNOT LEGALLY CONSENT.
Yesterday evening I came across a post on instagram that promoted the pairing of Hecate and Mildred and I was absolutely disgusted.
In series 1 of the 2017 series Mildred is 11-12. Bella Ramsey (the actress who portrays Mildred in TWW17) is currently only 15 years old.
Hecate Hardbroom is a woman in her late 40ās in season 1. Raquel Cassidy (actress portraying HB) is currently 50 years old.
Mildred is a child and Hecate is an adult in a position of trust. Therefor, any sexual/romantic relationship would be immoral and illegal.
Before I hear the poor excuse of, āage is just a numberā, NO! JUST NO! A sexual/romantic relationship between an adult and a child is paedophilic in nature and cannot involve consent, and by shipping such a pairing, you are condoning and advocating child abuse.
This is just ridiculous and wrong on so many levels and in all seriousness, if you ship such a pairing, youāre pretty fucked up and should probably take some time away from the internet and evaluate your life.
Look, Iām all for anyone creating content that explores various kinks in fandom, as long as consent is clearly established. But I donāt consider child abuse a kink or a fetish and itās just so wrong, on so many levels.
Content that promotes such relationships and attempts to fetishise a relationship between and a child is harmful. And whilst your fantasising about Hecate and Mildred in a romantic/sexual scenario, just remember; countless children are going through this devastating experience in real life.
Child sexual abuse causes a whole manner of trauma, both during the act and afterward. By normalising such things and openly giving your approval, you are becoming part of the problem and your morals should be called into question.
Again, Iād like to re-iterate: A CHILD (A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 18) CANNOT GIVE CONSENT! Would you like to tell all the victims of child sexual abuse who were groomed or manipulated to say āyesā that they gave consent and therefor, they werenāt actually abused?
Age of consent laws are in place for a reason, the main one being to protect children, so if youāre a decent human being with any sort of conscious then please, observe them.
I think thatās all I have to say, and Iām sorry if this was a complete ramble, but this was something that angered me and something I just cannot condone.
Again, the people who ship such pairings are such a small percentage of TWW fandom and for that, Iām thankful. But even 1 person who thinks Hecate/Mildred is appropriate is too much.
But really, I am so happy and proud too be a part of such an amazing fandom and as I said, the majority of you guys are amazing and as a whole, very respectful, and I know there are others who have also voiced their disgust on this topic, so Iām sorry if this was a repetitive shoelaces. But I felt it was important.
