Can we appreciate how The Brain’s parents keep a dictionary just to look up words that their son says that they don’t understand, but they want to encourage him in his intelligence and don’t shut him down with ‘In English please’ like most people in cartoons will tell the smart characters?
Even real life parents are more likely to ask for their kid to rephrase their sentence while using simpler terms, and having seen this with my brother, it discourages the kid from even talking to the parent because they start to think a)they don’t understand them b)they are stupid and c)they have no middle ground to meet at.
But The Brains parents are so caring and want Alan to never feel odd or like he can’t talk to them so they keep a dictionary- a very thick one- just to be able to talk to their son without having to make him feel like a bother for using words that aren’t every day regular people words.
And they black
The Brain is a fucking bear. A BEAR. Holy shit tumblr, you never dissapoint me.
@naturelovefreedom HE’S AN AFRICAN AMERICAN CODED ANTHROPOMORPHIC CHARACTER!!! HAVE YOU IDIOTS NEVER WATCHED ARTHUR??!! HE CALLS HIMSELF AFRICAN AMERICAN!!!! Omg!!!!
A link to the Christmas special, time stamped to where The Brain specifies that he celebrates Kwanzaa (41:48): https://youtu.be/ygXALnyCa0c?t=41m48s
“And the raspberry (represents) the African struggle for freedom”
This one is the timestamp for the Kwanzaa celebration itself (51:28)(it’s a brief clip in the episode wrap-up of everyone celebrating at home): https://youtu.be/ygXALnyCa0c?t=51m28s
Thank you! They been blowing me up!
Bruh. Why do they always step so far out of their lane?
they have been really trying it over this post
Anyone who thinks race does not exist in Arthur did not watch Arthur correctly/doesn’t remember enough. All of the characters hint at nationalities, at traditions from their grandparents etc. who lived in other countries, and even religions. Meaning, yes, race exists in Arthur-BUT NO ONE IS FIGHTING OVER RACES IN THE SERIES WHICH IS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL.
Brain has African roots-and African cousins. According to Wiki, those roots come from the Senegalese area of Africa. They even did a song about Africa when said cousin visited.

Francine Frensky was Hebrew, or at least Jewish.
You could even argue that Francine is black, based on the makeover episode where rich white girl Muffy tries to change her style to make her girly while also criticizing everything about Francine and her poor lifestyle. In that episode, Francine’s Bad Hair Day, you can very clearly tell they are making a hint that Francine has hair that is much different than Muffy’s. Sound familiar? Black hair and white hair are not the same. Hair is hair, but depending on your race, your hair tends to be much different than others.
The Reeds neighbors are Mexican
Binky Barnes family adopted a Chinese baby Mei Lin Barnes.
And you can’t go off their colors alone on the show. You have to know them as a person before you get the hints of what race the characters are meant to represent. In some cases yes, you can very clearly see what race someone is meant to represent but in an animal form-like Emily, DW’s friend, but in some cases, like when Celebrities were on the show, they either had the characters colors look like the person skin or changed it up to fit the series. Examples:
Mr. Rogers was one of the whitest old men around on TV, and we all loved him, but in Arthur he’s a dark tan/light brown
The same goes for Jack Prelutsky
Yo-Yo Ma -because no one on earth is a silvery gray
Alex Trebeck played himself but with a different last name
Then we have some very clear examples of characters fitting color schemes of their real life counterparts races.
Neil Gaiman
Backstreet Boys
Joshua Reedman (Aka Francine's canon uncle)
Michael Fincke
Michelle Kwan (a little paler in her Arthur appearance but it still works)
Race, nationalities, religion and all of that stuff exist in Arthur no matter how you try to water it down or deny it. The big difference between Arthur and our world is that in Arthur- I state again that Race and Nationality were not put down, they were not even big deals to the characters, but something to learn about and find out that no matter how people may look, what they do, people are people, and you should always accept people no matter their race, nationality, traditions, etc. If you didn’t take that from the show, I don’t know what you did take out of it other than a meme.
Come thru!!!
I love this post

Viola Davis, one of the most incredible and amazing actresses of our time blew our minds away with her acceptance speech at Critics’ Choice Awards. She won Best Supporting Actress for The Fences and by this speech she showed us, why she was the one to win it.
She’s brilliant, she’s stunning and she deserves it.
“Privilege of a lifetime is being who you are,” she said, stating that there is nothing better than staying true to yourself. No matter what you do, no matter how you try to behave to impress people, you will only succeed if you are being you. I’m so proud of her.

The drag queen from this photo has spoken up about the photo.
I won’t speak for all liberals, but I’d like to see a future where it isn’t a big deal for a woman in full modesty garb to sit next to a drag queen in NYC. It’s become a bit of a sensation, but her and I were just existing. The freedom to simply be yourself in a sea of people who aren’t like you is a freedom we all deserve.
The central irony is that this isn’t some hypothetical future–it’s just present day reality. This is a picture of two ordinary people going about their normal lives despite how haters want to politicize it lmao. So the underlying message is not “future liberals want” it’s “people conservatives want to eradicate”

Ella Dawson has genital herpes, and she wants to tell you about it.
She’s not speaking up for the shock value — she’s telling you because she wants all of us to be able to talk about STIs without shame or stigma. When we make it okay to talk about, she says, people are more likely to get tested and less likely to be afraid to share their status.
In her badass talk at TEDxConnecticut College, Ella tells the story of her diagnosis, how she overcame feeling like “human trash,” and why we need to end the stigma — now. It’s packed with information (and a shot of humor), and if you didn’t already agree with her, you will by the time she’s done.
Watch the full talk or read the transcript here.
(Full disclosure: Ella is TED’s social media manager. This post was written by her boss who is so incredibly proud of how fearlessly she speaks out.)
OK What the fuck is wrong with this bitch. Getting herpes is most definitely a reflection on a bad decision!!! There is something in this world called condoms!! Oh yeah and they are free at Planned Parenthood so you can’t even use the fucking excuse that they are expensive or your broke so you couldn’t buy any.. Seriously what the fuck I am not saying you have to make it a big deal that you have herpes and have to tell the fucking world but you need/should tell your sexual partner..
Hi! That’s me. I’m that bitch. Nothing wrong with me except for an anxiety disorder and a runny nose today.
Here’s a fun fact you should probably know: condoms do not prevent the transmission of herpes. That’s because herpes is transmitted through skin contact, not fluids, and a condom does not cover all of the areas where genital herpes can express itself. Herpes is also often transmitted through oral sex, which most people do not use protection for. Using condoms and dental dams can greatly reduce your risk of getting herpes, but telling people to just use condoms is quite useless advice. I should know—I was a Planned Parenthood volunteer who used condoms religiously when I contracted genital herpes.
Many people do not tell their partners that they have herpes because they do not know they have herpes in the first place. That’s because many people can carry the virus without showing symptoms, and herpes is not tested for in most standard STI tests. But most people have herpes—in fact, according to the World Health Organization, 2 in 3 people in the world have HSV-1, which is the strain of herpes that I have. In all likelihood, you have herpes too. You may have even contracted it from a family member who kissed you on the mouth when you were little.
I tell all of my partners that I have genital herpes before we have sex because I think they have the right to decide what they want to do with their bodies. I consider it part of obtaining informed consent. My partner who transmitted herpes to me did not give me the option to decide whether or not I wanted to take the risk of contracting the virus, and I think that was probably because he did not know he had the virus. I harbor no ill will towards him for transmitting to me. If he’d disclosed his status to me, I would have fucked him anyway.
Considering the fact that you know that condoms are available for free at Planned Parenthood—and that your tumblr is full of porn GIFs, no judgment!—I hope that you have been tested recently for herpes as well. It requires a blood draw, so if you’ve been peeing in a cup for your STI testing, you don’t know your herpes status. If you test positive for herpes, which you probably will, statistically speaking, I’ve written this guide on what to do after you’ve been diagnosed. I hope you will find it helpful!
Thank you for watching my TEDx talk, which you absolutely made sure to do before calling me a bitch, and have a wonderful evening!
DRAGGEDT
She said I’m that bitch….. I’m already gagged I haven’t even finished reading this
Yo, I lived in Santiago de Cuba for 4 months. I had a Cuban ID card and everything.
Let me tell you a bit about life in Cuba:
Their cars are still running for the most part. They now also have some newer cars manufactured from China.
Kids in rural areas get a great education. By rural areas, I mean “middle of nowhere, dirt roads only horses can get through (no cars)”. They even got cute school uniforms and everything.
Rural areas have food, running water, and electricity. If you’re from any other Third World country, you know how insanely amazing that is.
A friend of mine has a 3-year-old daughter who has a heart valve defect. If he lived outside of Cuba, she’d likely be dead, because he could in no way afford the expensive medical care. Instead, she has free access to some of the best doctors in the world, and the government even pays for her trips to the opposite side of the island to see specialists.
I was asked by the maid who cleaned the house I stayed at why I wore glasses instead of just getting laser eye surgery. I had to explain to her that I couldn’t afford it. “So why don’t you just apply for the government to pay?”
Everyone is guaranteed a minimum food allowance every month.
Everyone is guaranteed free education, including university.
I’ve met a sugarcane plantation worker who could afford to buy a plane ride. Why was he going on a plane ride? To go to his daughter’s graduation from medical school. In contrast, when I was little I was at a party where a little girl saw a plane fly overhead and said: “One day I’m gonna go in one of those” and all the adults burst out laughing because there was no way anyone in her family could ever afford such a thing.
Cuba used to have a less than 40% literacy rate. Within literally 2 years of the revolution, they had a 90% literacy rate. That’s because the government sent out student teachers with schoolbooks and lanterns way out to the boonies to teach people how to read and write. I met one of the women who did this.
University students in Cuba couldn’t comprehend that when we said that other countries let their citizens starve and die of curable illnesses we meant that literally. “Like, they can’t die, they have their food allowance!” “No, there’s no food allowance.” “But what happens if you can’t afford food?” “You die.” “…But– But taking care of people is the government’s job. They can’t just let their citizens die.” “But they do.” “BUT IT’S THE GOVERNMENT.” “I KNOW.”
Is Cuba perfect? Of course not. But it’s sure a lot better than a lot of places. It sure is a lot better than the US.
Don’t go ragging on Cuba without knowing what you’re talking about.
LMFAO you guys sound literally so fucking stupid and ignorant like oh yeah sure what do civil rights mean to anyone its not That Bad not having them
^^^^ this is the height of privilege. Not even seeing that the majority of the US population does not currently have equal access to civil rights.
Second, looking to other countries for ideas is always a good thing. They have implemented a system that provides for their people in a way that ours does not. We do not have to give up what we have here in order to learn from what has been done elsewhere.
“This photo from the 1870s shows a man proudly standing in front of a mountain of tens of thousands of bison skulls - an iconic American species that was systematically slaughtered by the millions as European Americans colonized the west.
The US Army actively endorsed the wholesale slaughter of these animals for two main reasons: to remove any competition with cattle, and to starve Native American tribes who greatly depended on the bison for food. Without the bison, the resisting tribes of the Great Plains would either be forced to leave or die of starvation.”
This wasn’t just a practice with Bison, for example @lilrednacho had shared with me how particular fish of East coast tribes had been dwindled down to extinction levels in order to starve Natives. You can find these stories across the US and anywhere settlers inflicted genocide. Including the tactics of witholding rations to enforce assimilation. Then there were other acts of environmental violence which mirrored policies of excessive violence by settlers, such as settlers starting role in global warming by deliberately cutting down trees with intent to modify climate change. https://timeline.com/american-settlers-climate-change-5b7b68bd9064 School curriculums and dominant culture as a whole needs to stop teaching about Indigenous genocide as if it was an “accident” or an unfortunate series of events that came out of settler expansion because they were poor and persecuted. These settlers were VIOLENT and had to act on violence to establish foundations of the current systems and power structures. Settlers acted upon doctrines, treaties and policies of violence and they partook in collective acts of violence in order to put them in place. Settlers were what started exploitative industries rooted in consumption, theft and inequity. And it wont be until this is recognized that we can finally move forward with hopes of repairing the damage that has been done.
this is so interesting
