Kitty Kielland, older sister of noted author Alexander Kielland, was not permitted by her family to train as a professional artist until age thirty. Making up for lost time, she took private lessons under Romantic painter Hans Gude in Karlsruhe, Germany. Kielland was active on the European art scene (she spent the period 1879-1889 in Paris) and advocated for women's rights.
