I found leftovers
I had dug pits into my heart trying to create room for your intrusion, but honestly I’ve only dug graves carved with different versions of my name.
It’s taken me this long to spit you out, after all these years of swallowing you down because you constantly make me sick but I’ve been too afraid to show it.
I’m kneeling to throw up your contamination, thinking that I’ll see the rot of your words once sweet, the reflection of the sea in your eyes, smell the stench of your hair that I used to run my fingers through.
Instead I smell wisteria and lavender, incense and grass.
And almost, almost everything else you took from me.
Moments with you where I don’t remember dialogue:
Your skin looked like blue watercolour under your mother’s lamplight. I was wondering if you prefered a coffee you didn’t ask for, or the afternoon sun still imprisoned behind curtains.
.
.
We were surrounded by lavender bubbles and candles. The water was warm. Your hair felt like rainswept fields across my bare chest.
.
.
You wore a t-shirt with an elephant on it the first time we ate under an orange sky. I chewed through your terrible coffee cake, and you reprimanded me for not bringing that sweet drink you liked. Our smiles lasted forever that day.
.
.
There was an old movie playing. I was cold on the couch. The wine bottles were empty. I couldn’t see your eyes as the dark framed your face like you were a portrait needing protection. You tell me about your brother, and that you hate him.
.
.
We sat on the sands of that beach until we were at the mercy of the cold, black waves and the stars above us. It was exciting, disobeying my parents. It was exciting exchanging secrets and touches for the first time, where in the end we would leave them to drown in the waves.
