“OH, WOW! I WISH I COULD BE AN EXPLORER!” He could just imagine it now– finding ancient human artifacts and bringing them back to show Sans and Undyne and Alphys, impressing everyone with his rugged skill and stamina. That would almost be as cool as being a real guard!

“WELL, IF YOU WANT SOME GOOD FOOD, YOU SHOULD TRY MY COOKING! I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT’S PRETTY… SAUCE-ATIONAL! NYEH HEH HEH!! …THAT’S A PUN, BECAUSE I MAKE SPAGHETTI A LOT. …BUT REALLY, YOU SHOULD TRY IT! I’VE NEVER HAD AN ORAN BERRY BEFORE, BUT I COULD PROBABLY WORK IT INTO A DISH IF YOU WANT ME TO!”

“It’s more of a medical berry than it is real food.” Leaf admitted with a shrug. “They’re usually used to fix major and minor injuries.”

He pulled out the Oran Berry, the deep blue fruit large in his claw.

“You can have this one.”

The Snivy knocked on Kaza's door, shuffling in place slightly. He slept the night after the debate with Nicole - and well... He didn't think he'd be getting a chance to come back after /that/. As the door opened, Leaf's face was an apologetic smile. - UndergroundSnivy

Kaza opened the door and honestly expected it to be one of his mothers to get him for breakfast. Seeing Leaf again after such an abrupt parting was…stunning. He didn’t know what to do or what to say. He just sort of stared at him in a dumbfounded silence before raising a hand and waving slightly. “Ahhh…h-hi.”

“I got your letter.” He chuckled sheepishly. “So, uh. It’s nice to see you again? Sorry for not realizing it sooner - I was working on my house in Waterfall.”

Leaf was not one for social activity. In fact, that was the worst of things he was able to do.

But, well - it’s been a while and he dropped by to say hi, at least.

Papyrus nodded vigorously, soaking in the Snivy’s every word. …Even if the smaller creature didn’t actually seem to have much to say.

Sunlight. Papyrus had dreamt about it, gently shining down on him unobstructed by cavern walls, warming his bones in a way that even the firey magic of Grillby could not. He smiled dreamily at Leaf as he thought about it. The Snivy must have felt so lucky to have experienced it all first-hand!

“OH, I SEE! I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT. IT MUST BE DIFFICULT TO TRY TO EXPLAIN ALL OF THE WONDERS OF THE SURFACE TO ME, WHEN I CAN’T EVEN REALLY PICTURE ANY OF IT! …BUT, WOWIE! YOU EXPLORE FOR A LIVING? THAT SOUNDS LIKE A DREAM JOB!! …IS THAT HOW YOU WOUND UP DOWN HERE?”

He nodded with a wide grin. 

“Exploring is great! You get to find treasure, sometimes save people, find things that nobody else in decades have even seen! So, when I saw a cave on this unexplored mountaintop - well, I pretty much jumped right in!”

He paused with a frown.

“On hindsight, that was a rather bad idea. I didn’t have an Escape Orb so I can’t leave when I want to, and I feed off sunlight. And well, no sunlight down here.” Leaf shrugged. 

“I’m pretty lucky I can still grow things down here, even if Oran Berries aren’t the most filling of foods.”

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. Oh, and a cellphone is… Well, you know how some Pokemon can use telepathy? Think that, but focused into a device that’s powered by electricity.”

“Those crude things are nothing compared to my portals,” she said angrily. “And, no, none of these glyphs are like the runes used in those. A few may come from the same base magic, but these glyphs are very much different, and contain a much stronger magic than a rune,” she explained. “And how are you even able to comprehend any of these? They contain a magic far too old for anyone in this age to see.”

Leaf shrugged.

“I’m just explaining what I’m seeing. I’m not saying I understand what I’m seeing, I’m just saying I recognize it.” He admitted with a frown. 

“I trust my memory.”

He paused.

“If I were to draw the one glyph I recognized, would anything happen? Normally back home, we’d needed something to start it, but...”

She said they were powered by her magic - and this world was filled with magic.

Well, that, and he didn’t want to do anything stupid to set her off. Well, more than before.

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. Oh, and a cellphone is… Well, you know how some Pokemon can use telepathy? Think that, but focused into a device that’s powered by electricity.”

“No, I’m not, kid,” she said sternly. “I’ve been around for a LONG time. I know how the Multiverse works. I’ve been here from the very fucking start and I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.” The nerd got up from her seat and began to draw glyphs in the air. They were very complex ones, and it would be hard for the Snivy to even comprehend them.

“Every universe runs on a balance. Do you know what a wormhole does? It tears straight through time and space without a single care,” she explained. “A portal, on the other hand, is a complex magical doorway that’s been created carefully and expertly. They function as doorways, while wormholes are just a vacuum between two spaces.”

The nerd moved one hand away from the glyphs she was making and pulled a strange, green ‘cigarette’ out from her Pocket and set it in her mouth. She then summoned a blue flame and set it on the end. No smoke came from it, and the cigarette didn’t seem to be burning. In fact, is seemed to have a very natural scent to it.

“Now, that badge shouldn’t even be working in this Universe. It should be broken and unable to be used. The only reason it’s working is someone, somewhere, has opened a portal to your Universe. I should know. The Vale tells me these things,” she explained.

“However, if you were to use that portal, you would be the end of your Universe. We don’t want a time paradox here nor there,” she said. The Lucario was still quite mad, but she continued. “And, by the way, Palkia doesn’t know shit. None of the Legendaries in your world know anything about how time and space actually work. There are little details that no one ever notices. Ever wonder how something of yours has torn, but you kept it away from anything that could? It’s exactly that. People just shrug it off, when, in reality, it’s a warning that time and space are being damaged.” She decided to pause for a moment, to hear what the kid had to say.

Leaf groaned. He wasn’t Umbreon, Espeon, or Umbra. 

He didn’t have their notes and explanations.

He didn’t even know what a wormhole was.

But…he wanted to prove her wro-

Leaf paused, staring at the runes for a second. There was a flash of recognition in his eyes.

“Hold on, are you sure your portals and Magnagates are different?” He questioned firmly.

“I think I recognized some of your runes as the ones they drew on the ground before they start up a Magnagate.”

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. Oh, and a cellphone is… Well, you know how some Pokemon can use telepathy? Think that, but focused into a device that’s powered by electricity.”

“You’ve… You’ve somehow gained access to wormholes. You’ve been making wormholes for simple travel…” The female Lucario began to twitch. She was clearly getting mad.

“Of FUCKING course you’ve got wormholes! The Pokemon in your universe are messing up the balance about as much as fucking HUMANS!” she yelled. Loudly. Oh, the nerdcario was mad now. She couldn’t believe that Pokemon were just disregarding the natural balance and creating WORMHOLES of all things! It was like they had no idea how much they’ve doomed their universe! “So that’s why I’ve been unable to get there! Kid, you better have everything from your home there, because your universe has probably imploded by now!”

Leaf blinked, surprised at the vehemence. He was about to respond in kind and in volume, before he took a quick breath and steadied himself.

He didn’t want to wake up the other residents, after all.

“They got a lot of attention across the world about the discovery, even the Legendaries. They checked, and the only real danger from using it were the dungeon Pokémon.”

“If it was dangerous enough to do something like that, Palkia himself would have told them off 7 years ago.” The Snivy pointed out, before pulling out his Explorer Badge. The onyx stone in the middle pulsed with grey light.

“That, and my Explorer Badge is still shining - the guild hasn’t been disbanded or destroyed.”

He placed it back in his bag with a frown.

“Maybe you’re mixing it up with something different?”

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. “Abandoned, huh? Because of the Mystery Dungeons nearby? Well, that’s just stupid,” said the nerdy Lucario. “Any scientist would immediately set up base in an area like that to study the nature of the Dungeons and make new items to help in them.”

“But it’s good to know that you actually care about safety. Too many guilds don’t actually teach advanced safety courses.”

“It’s more like you can dig a hole in the ground and every once in a while, there’d be a brand new Mystery Dungeon to explore.” Leaf explained with a shrug. “8 years, and we still haven’t found all of them.”

“And, uh. Actually, we do have a few scientists. Guildmaster Umbra and the Eevee twins all research Mystery Dungeons.” Leaf admitted. 

“They came up with the guild namesake, Magnagates. They’re temporary Mystery Dungeons created in order to travel between large spaces. It’s a bit dangerous - but it makes traveling so much quicker and cheaper. I used one once - and I was able to travel across the ocean to the Grass Continent.”

He sighed.

“Still had to pay the Lapras for the ferry back, though.”

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. “Oh, now I see why you’ve been getting away with it..” she said. “Mystery Dungeons and such… But Terraforming? That’s… That’s not really a good thing to do. What about the desert Pokemon that used to live there?” she asked. “What happened to them?” It was quite clear that the nerd didn’t like the imbalances with Nature where the Snivy was from. Pokemon growing houses without a single sacrifice or exchange? That was going against the balance of nature and energies.

“Well, uh. From what I heard, it was abandoned completely. Not even a Trapinch. There were just too many Mystery Dungeons in the location.”

Leaf frowned.

“It’s still kind of dangerous to wander even 8 years later, but at least everything’s marked now.” He admitted. “Because of that, and the fact that most of the Magnagate Guild are adventurers, there’s a lot of training focus on preparation, safety, and escape.”

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. “Yeah, Nature hates cheaters very much. If you want to do things, then you need to do it with balance,” she explained. “Besides, even if you were to escape… Nature is a multidimensional thing. It’s literally everywhere. There is no escape from it.”

Leaf frowned.

“Huh. If this version of Growth gave nature enough problems for it to act on, we’d have a whole lot more problems back home.” He admitted. “The Guildmaster’s also a Snivy, but he’s much more powerful than I am, and also knew how to use that version of Growth. He grew some of the houses we had in Paradise from the ground up.”

The Snivy paused, thinking more on the subject.

“Then again, with the amount of Mystery Dungeons in the area - I don’t think nature really cared that much about the Mist Continent in particular, let alone the former desert we lived at.” Leaf admitted with a shrug.

The nerdy Lucario tilted her head some at the Snivy.“You’re here to see Kaza?” she asked. “Well, glad to see you’re one of his actual friends, unlike the others. “Nature is a True Neutral force of Balance,” explained the nerdy female. “One must understand that to give, one must take. What you’ve been doing has been messing up the balance quite a bit.”

He shrugged.

“In short, nature doesn’t like cheaters.” Leaf quipped. 

“To be honest, that makes me want to explore it more, not less - but that’s just a feeling I get when it comes to these things.” The Snivy admitted with a chuckle. 

“Don’t worry about it - I know it’s better not to do something every once in a while. Plus, I don’t have the necessary items so that I can leave safely if it’s too dangerous. There’s that too.”

“Well, actually… It’s more of the magical nature of the nearby forest would cause problems and probably get you in a lot of trouble,” she explained sternly. “You may be just a kid, but that doesn’t change anything about what would happen.”

“Right, you said something about that. Overseers of Vale Forest, right?” 

Leaf sighed.

“I was hoping the forest might be a bit more friendly to the occasional wanderer - but nature is rather indescri-indes...”

He paused for a second, trying to figure out the word.

“Equal about things.” He finished, slightly blushing.

The Snivy was intelligent - but he spent his days wandering and training, not schooling. 

“Um, no. I wouldn’t like to see. Besides, the weather forecast said it would snow, and I haven’t checked if it has started to yet,” explained the nerd. That wasn’t the biggest reason, though. The nearby Vale Woods already didn’t like the Snivy, and she could feel that.

Leaf frowned, slightly disappointed by the answer. He shrugged and continued on.

“Well, alright. To be honest, weather isn’t much of an issue when it comes to the initial growing. It’s just that it won’t grow any more berries if it’s too cold.”

He clasped his hands over the vine and shook it enthusiastically, eyes wide and star-struck.

“THE SURFACE?!” How was this possible? How could a monster get to the surface without anyone hearing about it? “BUT–HOW? THAT’S AMAZING! I’M PAPYRUS! IT’S MY JOB AS A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL GUARD TO KNOW ALL ABOUT THE SURFACE!” Sort of. “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT IT!!”

The Snivy winced as the vine was pulled by the much larger skeleton before he retracted the limb. On hindsight, that really should have been expected.

“Well, uh. There’s lots of green, much more sunlight, and uh.”

Leaf paused for a good ten seconds, searching for words, before giving up.

“You know, for my job being to actually explore the world, I really can’t describe it very well.” He admitted sheepishly. “It’s one of those things that you have to see with your own eyes to really understand.”

It took Papyrus a moment to realize that the voice was addressing him. There wasn’t exactly anyone else around, but the skeleton wasn’t really known for his skills of perception. He turned around, blinking down at the Snivy.

“OH! HELLO!”

He tilted his head curiously to the side, settling his gloved hands on his hip bones. The stranger was not a human, but they were almost as good. They were a surprise. Surprises were rather rare, here. Monsters wandered through every once in a while, but for the most part, things stayed pretty routine. Papyrus was more than a little excited, and his grin widened even further than usual.

“ARE YOU VISITING SNOWDIN? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? WHAT’S YOUR NAME?” Papyrus didn’t pause long enough between questions to let the newcomer answer, but after the third one, he finally calmed down enough to let the stranger speak.

“Sort of?” Leaf admitted with a frown. “I just finished visiting a friend, to be honest. And, uh. I came from the surface. My name’s Leaf.”

Leaf extended a shoulder-vine for the skeleton to shake as greetings - the Snivy was too small for a proper claw-shake anyway.

The cold hit Leaf as soon as he left Kaza’s comfortable cabin.

It wasn’t as bad as when he first went out, but that wasn’t saying much. At least this time, he wasn’t at risk of dying from hypothermia.

The Snivy frowned, turning back towards the Ruins. There was a stand over there, wasn’t there?

Struggling in vain to actually remember what the sign said, he mentally debated whether or not he should actually figure it out. On one hand, it was freezing cold. On the other - it might say something as odd as Dog Marriage.

Why would species have any impact on marriage, anyway?

One coin flip for a decision later, and Leaf arrived at the post by short-cutting through the woods.

...

There’s a skeleton there. That wasn’t there before.

“Um. Hello?”

Notably, the Snivy was behind the skeleton’s post, and thus, the skeleton himself.

“Kid, you’ve been doing something no normal Grass-Type can do,” said the nerdy quickly. “You’re not just accelerating your body’s growth, but you’re literally changing the DNA and very ATOMS of plants to make them grow. That’s a power only a Goddess (with a capital G) like Lee-zha should be able to handle.”

“DNA and atoms?” Leaf frowned. “To be honest, I’m not sure what those are. But I could show you if you want - it’d only take a few minutes outside.”
