Life is Beautiful

Dawn is a short film i directed, filmed and edited. Its about a troubled young woman who finds herself exploring urban London during the early hours, tired and bored of her surrounding she seeks out greener pastures and discovers a new thirst for life, but is she too late to save herself from herself.

Heres a short film i made for Kirsty’s Graduation with my Canon 550d. It was very much a spare of the moment thing that i did without a tripod etc but i am still pleased with the outcome. Although massively in advance i plan to do more of these next year, if anyone wants or knows of anyone that would want a film like this (but longer and better quality) please put them in contact with me.

Eric (Jack Oconnel) is a violent and angry youth transferred to adult prison 2 years early as he was judged uncontrollable in a young offenders institution. His experience from these institutions is evident straight away, he keeps his mouth shut when being ushered through the entry gates and instantly makes a weapon and hides it inside the fluorescent light, that lights his cell. One of the key themes of Starred up is the Father Son relationship between Eric and Nev (Ben Mendhelson). His father who attempts to create a bond between them is constantly embarrassing Eric as it only ruins his starred up and bad boy reputation, by having someone babysit him on the inside. For Eric it is too little to late as this is the man who left him all those years ago to be tormented by his drug addict mother and abusive stepfather. After a brutal confrontation with a gaggle of guards, who Eric gets the better of by latching onto one guards penis with his mouth, and refusing to let go he meets Oliver, who orders the guards to leave him under his care. He (after some convincing) takes Eric under his wing and brings him into his group, which consists of other young violent offenders with underlying anger issues.

This Incredibly gritty and raw film highlights the faults and wrongdoings deeply engraved into the British justice system. Instead of being taught to change their ways, young men on the inside are instead taught to wear their misdemeanours as a mask and prepare for a lifetime of imprisonment. Starred up highlights the fact that even the angriest can change their ways, if they are listened to instead of beaten, I felt Starred up was very genuine in its delivery of this ideal.

Jack O’Connell to me is still a bit of an enigma; I’m undecided whether he is one of the best young British actors around or a genuine thug. Either way he is genuinely convincing in Starred Up as he grabs the audience by the throat and drags them down the hallways of this intense and authentic prison drama. I suppose with the above comment in mind, type casting is just part of the trade, and he certainly has one character and persona down to an absolute t. I would love to see him play something outside his comfort zone though, as I feel he has a lot more to offer, perhaps a the charming British love interest to Cameron Diaz in her next romantic comedy… although I just cant see it.

Starred up has no non diegetic soundtrack whatsoever; the shouts from prisoners, gates clinking shut and utter silence are all common place and builds the intensity making you feel incredibly un easy throughout. This was one of the few films that I have managed to go and see this year and I am so pleased I did, although I was annoyed when it ended so quickly only later to find out that It had a running time of 106 minutes. The film absolutely flew by and that pays dividends to the sublime acting of O’connel, Mendhelson and Friend as well the excellent directing and writing of David Mackenzie and Jonathan Asser respectively. Starred up could have done with at least another 30 minutes running time, but always leave your audience wanting more as PT Barnum once said.

Throughout the film you slowly learn more about Eric’s back-story but it is still rather vague even to the end credits. You are very much aware that they all have there own different and potentially gruesome pasts, but rather than delving into them they are left to rest and to the assumptions of the audience. By doing this I feel Mackenzie has created a film that is genuinely about the prisoner rather than the crimes they committed, the emotional and powerful performances of the entire cast certainly echo this.

Indeed the entirety of the film has a certain mystery about it, and I was half expecting a big plot twist. Starred Up though, turned out to be something much more than an edgy and entertaining prison flick but rather an incredibly authentic and raw look at the British justice system.
