In this world, Monsters were cursed after The Great Human/Monster War. They lost the ability to read and write when they were sealed away in the Mountain, and only a select few can still claim to utilize traditional written language.
Today, the Underground is strewn with Gothic Victorian structures, streetlamps, and iron-wrought gates. Traditions and structural integrity rule all, and social hierarchy is spearheaded by only the most intelligent and sophisticated.

A child prodigy with a bright future. "That is what my instructors have told me, yes."
Sans (Krill)
A wannabe thug and self-proclaimed rapper. Viewed as having below average intelligence and social skills, frequently not considerate or considered. Works at an ice cream parlor to keep himself afloat until his rap career takes off. "DRUGS, MONEY, BITCHES!"
Papyrus (Jabot)
An old-fashioned young accountant with a myriad of health problems. Walks everywhere with a cane. Doesn't get along with his older brother and wasn't afraid to call him out in public when they briefly lived together. Has too many allergies to avoid and medicines to take. Deals with chronic pain and only has eight fingers total. "Good heavens, what is the world coming to? Ah well. Not much to do other than let it sort itself out, I suppose. Never mind that-- would you care for a spot of tea, friend?"
Muffet (Belle)
A young farmer who sees everyone she meets as an equal. Unable to read Lettering, she takes lessons (as a hobby) from an elderly fire elemental by the name of Grillby. She hopes to be one of the few Monsters who unlock Blue Magic so that she can understand the stories written in untranslated books. Friendly. "He he he, you think so? Thank you!"
