Cheating skeletons UT, UF, US: When the significant other catches them cheating, the skeleton hears a crack. The sound was from the significant other's soul cracking because they are so hurt by the skeleton's betrayal. Not enough to shatter, but enough to be dangerous for the s/o. (I found this blog via the cheating asks and I love it. Your angst is just *chief kiss* magnificent.)
LISTEN!!! I want you to know I LIVE for the angst!!! Thank you!!! Sorry it took so long! And sorry for the soul crushing angst you are about to witness!Ā
There he was... in your shared bed with another monster. The doorknob felt cold and heavy in your hand, the only thing really grounding you in the moment. The three of you stared at each other in horror and shock. The air was thick, time was frozen. Suddenly, breaking through the silence, was sharp crack. The sound shattered the spell that had stopped time. You turned and bolted out the door, clutching your chest where you felt your soul starting to ache...
Sans: If monsters could throw up, Sans certainly would have done that. Instead, he sat there soaking in his shame as whatever-their-name-is awkwardly showed themselves out. What had just happened? Sans was an intelligent monster, but his brain seemed to slow down, refusing to allow him to process anything. He stumbled to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of ketchup. After taking a long pull from the bottle, he finally realized what happen. You caught him cheating, then... that crack. He flinched at the memory. Your soul... Was it alright? Were you alright? Should he try to find you? Should he give you space? He glanced at his phone, his thumb hovering over your contact info, before sighing and stuffing it in his pocket. He gritted his teeth and took a step, suddenly in the cave where crystals glistened like stars. Sans wasnāt surprised to see you sitting with your back against the wall, looking up at theĀ āstarsā. The light glistened off the tears rolling down your cheek. Sans quietly observed you, studying your damaged soul. It nearly destroyed him, seeing how injured it was, knowing that he caused it. How could he fix it? He shook his head. He couldnāt, he thought, heād only make it worse. Instead, he disappeared back to your shared room, sending a quick text to Alphys, letting her know where you were and that youād need to be taken care of immediately. Sheād help you get back on your feet, heād stay out of your way. Itās whatās best for you, what you need, what you want... Right?
Papyrus: The tall skeleton bolted for the door. He honestly didnāt realize the other monster was interested in him that way! You had to believe him! He never meant... and the cracking sound! That wasnāt you... right? He followed you out into the snow, into the forest where you two first met. Where you solved his puzzles and helped him set up new ones. Those memories usually made him smile and laugh, but now they only weighed upon him, feeding the guilt. Papyrus finally found you, sitting under a tree, holding your chest. You were trembling, breathing heavily, and obviously in pain. Papyrus approached you cautiously, reaching out a hand, calling your name softly, but you flinched away. He could see how damaged your soul was and it caused him to recoil in disgust. Not disgust of you, but of himself. How could he call himself great? How could he expect to be part of the royal guard when he couldnāt even protect you? He didnāt know what to do. He felt helpless, hopeless...Ā Papyrus collapsed to his knees in front of you, head buried in his hands, and sobbed.Ā
Sans: Guilt was something Sans learned to with everyday. He thought he had gotten over it. In the Underground, guilt was weakness, it held you back. If you felt guilty, you could be taken advantage of. So, ever since he was young, he learned to ignore it. When you bolted from your shared bedroom and out into the night, the twisting, burning guilt writhed in his stomach, more persistent than ever before. The mood having affectively been ruined, Sans kicked the other monster out. He flopped back in bed and scrolled through his phone, trying to ignore the guilt that churned his stomach. You two had had your spats, youāll be back in a few hours. Sans didnāt know when he dozed off, but the memory of your soul cracking brought him crashing back to reality. Your soul... that was your soul that had cracked. Why hadnāt he processed it sooner?! How badly had it been damaged?! Where you even still alive?! He quickly raced out of the house, looking around for any sign of you, but the falling snow had covered up all your tracks. Cursing to himself, Sans quickly started checking all the places you could be, praying you were still alive.
Papyrus: That crack played on repeated, echoing in his skull as he searched all of Snowdin for you. Stomping into the forest, he started convincing himself that it wasnāt his fault. You were being dramatic, thatās all. That crack couldnāt have been your soul. It had to have been you banging against something in your hurry to leave! You were the reason he cheated anyway right?... Right? Why did he cheat?... No! It was your fault! Your soul was just weak! Thatās it! But his arguments fell flat when he found you, sobbing in the arms of an uncomfortable looking Sans. Sans looked up at him, and Papyrus knew it was bad. Your soul... Sans didnāt have to say anything at all. Your soul was damaged... maybe beyond repair.
Sans: He felt it, your soul cracking. It destroyed him. How had this happened anyway? He thought the other monster was just being friendly... He didnāt realize he was... He didnāt think he could... Oh, stars! Sans did the only thing he could think of. He called Papyrus. Papyrus was the one who found you, clutching you chest as the spray of the water mingled with your tears. He took you straight to Undyne to get your soul looked at. He didnāt want to tell Sans how bad it was, but he knew he couldnāt lie to him. When Sans arrived at Undyneās lab, he was shaking badly. He asked a million questions, but his brother didnāt have any answers for him. So, instead, Sans spent the time pacing the floor, uncharacteristically silent. Thoughts raced through his head, never staying long enough for him to consider. Would you be okay? What if you...? Was this all his fault? How could he make it up to you? Would you still want to be with him? Would you forgive him? Would you take him back? Undyne stepped out of her lab, frowning and Sans felt his whole world start to collapse.Ā
Papyrus: He watched you run away from him, watched your form disappear into the darkness of the Underground, and he just sat there. The other monster had left long ago and still Papyrus sat there, still hearing the crack of your soul. He felt numb, frozen, empty. What was he supposed to do? Heād never been with a human before. How was he supposed to know your soul was so... fragile? He looked down at his shaking hands. He needed a drink. He needed to find you. He needed to forget you. He needed to see if you were okay. Papyrus was surprised to find himself at Muffetās, his body having gone into autopilot. He let out a sigh and pushed open the door. The first thing he saw was you, sitting in a dark corner booth, your knees pulled tightly to your chest. He saw how you trembled, tears streaming down your cheeks. As he slowly approached, he could hear your labored breathing. You were in pain and he was the cause of it. He reached out to you, lifting you up as if you weighed no more than a feather. You were too weak to protest. Quickly, Papyrus took you to Undyne. Leaving you in her care, Papyrus went back home, knowing youād probably be better off never seeing him... again.
