Why I Read.
Someone in a community forum was asking for help getting back into reading. Which felt like a personal question to me, not that it shouldn't be asked but that its answer would probably be rather particular.
I got back into reading after the 2016 US Election, I was haunted by the actions and justifications of my fellow Christians, I slowly started pulling away from Christianity. It was a lonely season existentially. I had to go hunting for a new view of the world. For me it began with Kurt Vonnegut, leading to James Baldwin, Albert Camus, Joan Didion, Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Sophocles, Kierkegaard, Toni Morrison, Mary Shelley, Cormac McCarthy....
I wanted to understand how others saw the world. So I started a book club with some people from work, some Christian friends who I still had from my former days and some friends who like me are former Christians.
We talk, we disagree, it's loving.
It's good.
