On Thursday, June 24, Steve G. Lover (a.k.a. Stephen Glover), brother of Donald Glover (a.k.a. Childish Gambino), released a new mixtape called DJ Rhetorik Presents: Rich Black American. However, what got everyone really excited was the eleventh track on the 18-track mix, “No Hookahs,” which features Gambino. This came right after Gambino’s announcement of new music and an app called PHAROS, which details a three-day listening experience in Joshua Tree, California. Along with this announcement was a statement from Childish saying that these three days in September will be the only time in 2016 that he will be performing live. This is the first music we’ve gotten from Gambino since his 2014 release of the double-disc project, STN MTN/Kauai. This is not the first time the brothers have come together for a song, as Steve appears on Gambino’s tracks “II. Worldstar” from Because The Internet, “Poke” from Kauai, and “Asshots Remix” from STN MTN.
“No Hookahs” uses the beat from the 2014 Tyga and Young Thug song “Hookahs.” The track is only two-and-a-half minutes long, but both brothers deliver excellent lines throughout, and Gambino lets everyone know that he is still in the rap game after a years-long absence. While this sounds more like a song off of one of his first mixtapes, Childish has been known to be very experimental with his music, especially on his 2013’s Because The Internet. Very little has been revealed about his upcoming album and listening experience, so, personally, I think that his new music will be like nothing we have ever heard from him before.
