You show up at his door holding the carcass of a once-thriving cactus. “Emergency,” you say flatly, holding up the cactus in embarrassment.
Leehan blinks at you. He’s wearing a faded gray hoodie and round glasses that slide down his nose just enough to make him look like he walked out of a drama. His hands are dirt-streaked—probably mid-repotting something when you knocked.
He looks down at the limp cactus in your pot. One side has deflated like a balloon. A chunk of the dirt is missing. You think it fell off your windowsill last night, but you weren’t emotionally ready to acknowledge that.
“…That’s a cactus,” he says finally.
You nod solemnly. “Was.”
He sighs, holding the pot like it’s a patient on life support. “You overwatered it again, didn’t you?”
“Is that a judgment I hear in your voice, Mr. Donghyun?”
“No, just… concern,” he mutters, stepping aside to let you in. “Come on. Let’s see if I can salvage him.”
His apartment smells like earth with a hint of citrus. Plants are everywhere, lined on windowsills, hanging in woven macramé nests, crowding the table. You half-expect one to say hello.
Leehan sets the cactus down on his counter like it’s fragile, then begins gently brushing off the soil.
You hover awkwardly near the door, not wanting to ruin the very specific aura of his space. Eventually, he glances over his shoulder.
“You can sit down, you know.”
You perch on the stool by his kitchen island. “Do all your neighbors come to you with plant corpses, or am I just special?”
“You’re the only one who’s managed to kill three succulents in one month,” he says without looking up. “it's kind of impressive, honestly.”
“Why thank you. I’m honored.”
That earns a small smile from him, the kind that barely lifts the corners of his mouth but stays longer than it should.
You start coming over more after that. Not just for cactus resurrections, though those still happen (RIP Gregory 2.0, gone too soon).
Sometimes it’s because you saw a leaf turning yellow and panicked. Other times it’s because you don’t trust Google’s plant advice anymore. A few times, you show up with no excuse at all.
Leehan never complains.
He teaches you things without making you feel stupid, how to check root rot, how to mist properly, what perlite is (you thought it was a Pokémon at first).
You watch his hands as he works—deliberate and gentle, like he’s afraid the plants might flinch.
One afternoon, you arrive with a wide, shallow pot in hand and a sheepish grin.
“I tried something new,” you announce. “Attempted propagation. May or may not have Googled ‘can you grow a plant from a leaf that’s already half-dead.’”

You place the pot on his table. Inside is a very unimpressive sprout. It’s leaning sideways, confused about its place in the world.
Leehan crouches beside it like it’s a child’s science project. “What’s his name?”
“Leahn.”
His eyes flick up. “Le..ahn?”
“Short for… Leaf-han.”
He stares at you.
You hold your ground for three seconds before cracking. “Okay fine. It’s literally just you. I named it after you.”
For a terrifying moment, he says nothing. Just blinks, long and slow.
Then softly: “You named a plant after me.”
You cross your arms. “Well, yeah. I figured if I can’t grow plants for myself, maybe I’m better at growing things for you.”
There’s a pause.
And then, impossibly, he blushes.
Not the dramatic anime blush, but something real and quiet, his eyes dart away, his lips twitch like he’s trying not to smile too wide. He adjusts his glasses unnecessarily. You catch him looking back at you twice in the next ten seconds.
“…Thank you,” he says finally, voice low. “I’ll take care of him.”
You nod, suddenly shy. “You take care of everything, don’t you?”

"He's right though, he just worded it weirdly," Sungho started, hitting Woonhak on the head "is everything okay?" He looked up from his targets then to Jaehyun who seemed down.
"I'm just so nervous for the entrance exams. They're in two months but i've been out of touch for a while!" He whined, watching Sungho perfectly hit his targets.
"It's two months Jaehyun, you always find a way to get back on your feet. Why do you think you're our leader?" Taesan bumped shoulders with Jaehyun in an attempt to cheer him up, which worked a bit.
"You're right. I'll meet my quota for this week and I'll pass the entrance exams." Jaehyun smiled. "There's our leader." Sungho teased.
Jaehyun pulled his heart-shaped arrow backward, and released. It got closer and closer to the target until..
"Hyung," Woonhak said, petrified, "Did you just hit the dog!?" Sungho finished. "Heh, I mean.. on the bright side, the dog seems to love them." Jaehyun gave a sheepish grin, stretching the o.
Jiho sighed, "Jaehyun, your stats have really fell off this month." Jiho was the headmaster of KOZ, an agency for aspiring cupids.
"I know.. exams start soon, and I've just been very stressed." Jaehyun bit his lip. "I think you need a new environment. A fresh start-" Jaehyun stood from his seat, interrupting Jiho "Don't tell me you're bumping me down to the baby courses!"
Jiho sighed, signalling for Jaehyun to sit down, "No- although you should start again— you're bring brought to earth." Jaehyun's eyes widened, "Wait, isn't that post-grad only? i haven't even finished Target Practice 101!"
"That's exactly why. You need to observe a real love mission. Minimum interaction, no meddling, no arrows, no-"
"Got it!" Jaehyun beamed, already jumping out his seat. Jiho shook his head at the boy, Jaehyun would be the death of him.
Jaehyun grabbed his head as he tried not to puke all over the floor. "When Jiho said it would be a quick trip, I didn't think he meant this quick." he spoke to himself.
He nodded to himself, Jiho sure did spoil him. A nice 4 bedroom apartment, a balcony, and wow, it even included a girl- wait what?
You screamed, then Jaehyun screamed, then you screamed again. "What are you doing in my house?!" You grabbed the closest thing to defend yourself with.
"Y-your house?! Jiho sent me here!" Jaehyun yelled back, "Jiho? Who is that.. never mind- get out!' You threw a shoe at him. "Hey- don't throw things at me! I didn't wanna be here either!" He hugged his arms over his head.
"Then why are you here?" You held up a shoe, ready to attack again. "I don't know! Jiho sent me here." He pursed his lips, holding his hands in surrender. "Jiho? What are you even talking about." You lowered the shoe, intrigued now.
"You know, head cupid?" He looked at you like you were crazy. "Uhm, no I don't.. and cupid? The ones that wear diapers?" You scoffed. "Hey! I'll have you know I stopped wearing diapers at six." He said offended.
"..Right. Well I'm calling the cops, and maybe even the psych ward." You opened your phone, dialing 112. "Wait no! I'll prove it. I'll prove to you I'm a cupid. Well, in-training." You raised an eyebrow at him.
He cleared his throat, "I wasn't supposed to bring it with me, but here we are!" He summoned a bow out of nowhere. "W-Wait how did you do that? Am I on an episode of Impractical Jokers?" You looked around the room for hidden cameras.
"Impractical Jokers? Humans are so weird.. Anyway, look!" Jaehyun summoned an arrow, he fumbled with the bowstring, tongue sticking out in concentration, "Are you sure you know how to do this?" You asked nervously. "Psh- of course! Besides, nothing bad will happen-" he was cut short when the arrow was shot, it bounced around the apartment, then landed straight into Jaehyun's side.
You looked horrified. "A-Are you okay? Are you gonna die? Nonono I can't have someone die in this apartment." You started freaking out. "Look, I'm fine!" He gave a thumbs up, but he started glowing.
"Woah, that was weird.." He muttered, "Are you okay now?" You asked, scared to get any closer.
He looked up at you like you just hung the moon.
"If I had to rate you on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rate you a nine because I am the one you’re missing." Jaehyun giggled, pupils dialted.

“i’m gonna smell like a fruit salad by the time they’re done!” he called, meeting your eyes with a playful look that lingered for just a second too long. your heart skipped, but you looked away.
you were used to this; the little glances, the harmless teasing. you and taesan had always been… close. flirty, sure, but in that safe way where nothing had to be said and everything could still feel like something.
but lately, something had shifted.
he’d get quieter around you. he wouldn’t meet your eyes when you joked. he’d breathe like he wanted to say something else.

taesan blinked. “how—?” woonhak scoffed light-heartedly “i literally saw you staring at her for five minutes while she ate that icecream like it was a life-changing experience.” taesan groaned, throwing his head back. “it’s not that simple.”
“it kinda is,” woonhak said. “you like her. she likes you. everyone knows it but you two. so what’s the hold-up?”
taesan hesitated. “it’s just… what if i ruin it? what if i say something and everything shifts, and suddenly we’re not her and me anymore—we’re strangers who tried something?”

you popped up, gasping, hair a mess, eyes wide. "you're gonna pay for that!"
and with that, war began. you splashed him. he splashed harder. you tried to run, but he caught you, arms wrapping around your waist as the two of you tumbled into the shallow waves again, laughing like kids.
you looked up at him, close now, breathless, soaked, and smiling like he’d never stop. the laughter quieted. the waves rolled around your legs. taesan's gaze lingered on yours for a moment longer than usual.
"name…" he said softly, brushing a wet strand of hair from your cheek. “i’ve been meaning to say something.”
your heart thudded. “yeah?” you whispered.

The 'NOW HIRING' sign had been crooked when you first found it—half hanging off the glass door of the neighborhood convenience store, mostly-faded and barely legible.
Still, it was close, the pay was.. fine, and the manager didn’t ask too many questions. So, like any smart person; you took it.
By day three, you’d mastered the register, memorized the aisle layouts, and stopped noticing the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
You were restocking cup ramen when you heard the jingle of the doorbell. “Hi,” a voice said, bright, and just a little out of breath. “I’m here for the part-time shift?” The boy said with uncertainty.
You turned, and there he was. A boy with soft brown eyes, a little messy from the wind, holding a poorly written name tag in one hand and a half-eaten banana in the other. He looked.. effortlessly comfortable. Like he’d never rushed a day in his life.
The manager waved him in from behind the counter. “Perfect timing. You’ll be working the evening shift with name.” You blinked. “Sorry, what?” The boy turned to you with a cheeky grin. “Guess we’re coworkers now.”
You frowned. “You’re late.”
He took a bite of his banana, unfazed. “I’m early for tomorrow.”
You scoffed lightly and rolled your eyes. He just laughed and stuck out a hand which you reluctantly shook. “I’m Woonhak.”
Despite the rocky start, the shift passed quicker than usual.
By the second week, you stopped keeping count of Woonhak’s mistakes. He was the chaos to your calm, and you collided perfectly.
He stacked the gum in rainbow order, something about “aesthetics,” he said, and gave kids free candies without asking. You should’ve been annoyed, but the truth was, the store felt less like a job and more like.. something else when he was around.
He started walking closer to you, shoulder brushing yours when you both squeezed into the narrow storage room. His hands brushed against yours when you restocked the shelves. He learned your snack preferences, your playlist, your favourite TV shows.
And he remembered all of it.
As you flipped the sign ‘closed’ Woonhak came up behind you, two slushies leftover from the last batch. You looked into the cup. Cherry, your favourite.
“One for you,” he started, handing you the cup with noticeably less in it, “and one for your favourite coworker.” he grinned.
You pursed your lips, “I don’t have a favourite.” You said lowly, taking the cup anyway. You sat on the curb, slushies in hand sitting side by side. “You know, I think this is gonna be a great summer.
You looked at him, the way the glow of the sunset highlighted his features. The way his dopey smile never wavered.
Something told you he might be right.
You didn’t know when it started, not that you cared, you just hoped that it never ended. You’d both work the evening shift, then sit on the curb afterward with cherry slushies, watching the sky melt into navy.
And slowly, things shifted.
It became a routine:
Work. Slushies. Talks. Repeat.
Sometimes, he’d bring his sketchbook. He wasn’t great at drawing, but he’d sit beside you on the curb, legs stretched out, sketching the scene regardless.
“What’re you drawing?” you asked, sipping your slushie. “The store,” he said, then paused. “And whatever’s sitting next to it.”
You blinked. “You mean me?”
He shrugged. “Maybe.”
You didn’t push him. But after that, you started noticing the way he looked at you when you weren’t looking.

The first time someone asked if you and Woonhak were dating, you choked on the air.
You were doing your usual late-night slushie talks. Mrs. Lee, the old lady down the street walked towards the store and smiled. “What a lovely pair you two are. Are you two together, name?”
Woonhak just grinned. “She wishes.” Ms. Lee laughed and waved the two of you off.
You smacked his arm, but your face felt hot for the rest of the shift.
In the middle of July, the old air-con finally gave out, and Woonhak convinced the two of you to finish early and sit outside.
Your signature slushies in hand, you sipped quietly, this time, with a noticible heavyness in the air.
“You okay? You’re quieter than normal.” He teased, but you just gave a sad smile. You looked at him with sad eyes, “I talked to Manager-nim today, he said you’re leaving soon.” You started, noticing the way his face changed.
“He said that it’s not a ‘maybe’ anymore, and that its serious this time.” He looked down, not trusting himself to look at you.
He swallowed the lump in his throat. “Yeah, they called me back. I’ll be debuting soon.” He looked at you.
“Were you not gonna tell me? Were you just gonna leave?” You suddenly said. “I was, I just didn’t trust myself not to mess anything up. Please, don’t be mad, name.”
You shook your head, “I’m not, I just wanted to pretend. Pretend that for just for a little longer you’d stay, just for my selfish reasons.”
He didn’t answer. So you spoke, for the both of you.
“I’m happy for you, I really am. You’ve been wanting this.”
“But I still want this.”
You looked at him, but he didn’t meet your gaze.
“But?” You pushed.
“I didn’t expect to meet you.” You blinked. It’s like the world went still. You opened your mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He laughed bitterly, “Of all the summers, and the dumb jobs, why’d it have to be this one.”
There was a thick silence between the two of you.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” You asked. “What would it have changed?”
“It would’ve made me not get attached.”
This time, nobody said anything. The words seemed to have said it all. Lingering bitterly in the air.
Woonhak’s last day came all too soon.
He didn’t joke as much. He stocked the shelves normally, cleaned the washrooms without complaint, and put the gum in it’s normal places.
You pretened you didn’t notice. That you didn’t care. But you could only fool yourself so much.
You locked the doors, and flipped the sign ‘closed.’ And there he was. Two cherry slushies, one filled larger than the other, per usual.
He gave you the bigger one this time.
“That's new.” You mumbled, taking a seat on you usual spot on the curb.
“You always finish yours before me." he started, "Thought I’d be nice today.” He joked lightly.
For a long time, the two of you were quiet. Silently sipping your drinks as your shoulders touched every now and then.
He suddenly spoke up, breaking the thick silence. “I wanted to stay,” he started, “I still want to.” He clarified.
“But you wont.” Woonhak nodded in agreeance, “I can’t.”
You licked your lips.
“Then go.” You spoke in a whisper, like it hurt to talk any higher.
He grabbed your hand, shakily, but still, nonetheless. He leaned forward, resting his forhead against yours. “I’m scared I’ll forget what this feels like.” He confessed. “I wont let you.” You chuckled softly.
He pulled back, too soon in your opinion.
He stared at you, and you stared back. There were so many unspoken words, one that you could’ve replied to, yet all he did was smile.
“I’ll see you soon, name.” He said, standing up as he grabbed his backpack. He didn’t wait for a reply, he couldn’t.
The next shift, you found a sticky note on a packet of candy you loved.
“Thanks for the summer.
