Too close to where all his memories were dead and buried.
But he kept walking. Kept walking towards his past.
When he finally arrived at his destination, he saw the engraving on the tree.
Riwoo looked back at the carving.
The tiny heart had almost disappeared beneath the years, swallowed by the tree's growing bark. Nature had tried its best to erase it, but somehow it refused to disappear completely.
He remembered the day they'd carved it.
The pocketknife had been dull, neither of them knew what they were doing, and they spent more time laughing at their crooked letters than actually carving them. They'd argued over who got to write the heart. In the end, they both tried, and it came out lopsided.
"It looks terrible," Riwoo had laughed.
"It looks perfect," he had insisted. "Because we made it."
Back then, forever had sounded like an easy promise.
The future had been something exciting instead of terrifying.
Growing up had felt impossibly far away.
Now it felt like growing up had happened all at once.
"I thought you'd forget about this place," He said softly.
He'd spent years trying to forget it, convincing himself that one day it would fade into the background like every other memory.
His fingers curled into a fist at his side as he slowly turned around.
