Narratively makes sense. When Stratt was justifying why they were sending him on the suicide mission, part of it was that he didn’t have any partner, kids, or even a dog. Implying his life was less valuable on account of not fitting into society’s heteronormative structure. In an A/B/O setting where betas can’t reproduce , this would be equivalent to a beta’s life being less valuable for not being able to reproduce

His whole thing is wanting to be average so being a beta would be perfect for him. Also even if he wasn't a beta, he canonically was born a woman and changed his biological gender so he could be a man therefore it's not out of the question for him to be a beta.
