What are your plans for the lunar new year?

I plan on spending time with my family and making Korean pancakes. On new year’s day, I will give a new year’s bow to my grandma.

Unintentional Love Story will be released soon. Please tell us about the drama.

It is based on a webtoon and is about a romance that starts out as a lie. I play the role of Ji Wonyoung, a general affairs manager and employee of a large company. The drama will be released soon this year, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Did you read and reference the webtoon?

I read the webtoon while preparing for the role and noticed many similarities between Ji Wonyoung and myself. We both have bright personalities but are not good at letting others know when we’re going through a tough time, which really hit home. The webtoon is already very famous, and during filming, I paid a lot of attention to the tiny details to ensure that I was portraying my character as similar to the source material as possible. In the webtoon, Wonyoung has a very bubbly personality, and I did my best to express that type of energy as well as I could.

How were you cast for the drama?

I was considered for the role because the production team thought that my image was very similar to that of Ji Wonyoung. I read the webtoon right after I received the offer, and as I was reading it, I thought to myself, “if it’s already this interesting as a webtoon, it’ll be even more interesting as a drama.” It would have been such a shame to pass up on this offer. Luckily, during my meeting, the director and the president of the production company viewed me favorably, and I was cast on the spot.

BL has yet to become mainstream in Korea. More and more BL dramas are being released these days. Nevertheless, were you hesitant about appearing in this drama? Did you watch any dramas for reference?

Honestly, I’m new to the BL genre. But, I liked the storyline of Unintentional Love Story, in which two people carrying hurt in their hearts get to know one another and gradually start opening up their hearts to each other. Thus, I tried to focus on the script when I was acting. Before we began filming, I watched Semantic Error, Call Me By Your Name, Cherry Magic, and other shows for reference.

How’s your on-screen chemistry with Cha Seowon?

When I heard that Seowon hyung was cast in the drama, I thought that he very much resembled the character of Yoon Taejun and that "the production team put a lot of thought into the casting." I've seen him on I Lived Alone and on a daily drama I watched with my mom, so it felt like I was meeting a celebrity when I met him for the first time. (laughs) It was hard at first, but it soon got better thanks to Seowon hyung's goofiness and adorableness. He's a very playful person and helped to lighten the mood on set, which is how we got close quickly. While filming, he led me well, and we often made each other laugh on set to cheer each other up. All of the cast members were close, and it's such a pity that Seowon hyung is in the military and won't be able to join us during promotions.

What should viewers focus on when watching the drama?

Please pay attention to the detailed emotions of Wonyoung and Taejun as they gradually get closer to each other. It’ll make your heart flutter.

What kind of feedback do you hope to receive after Unintentional Love Story airs?

I hope that after viewers watch the drama, they’ll say, “the actor Gongchan is in this drama and it’s pretty good,” and suggest it to others. I’ll be very grateful if I can become an actor that people deem worthy of recommending to others.

Q: How were you cast for Unintentional Love Story?

They contacted me first and said that they thought I suited the role of Wonyoung. I was very nervous and read the entire webtoon before going in for the meeting. While I was reading the webtoon, I felt like I had many things in common with Wonyoung. We both have bright and positive personalities, which is probably why I was cast for the role.

Q: In your opinion, what's the best scene?

Let me think. Every single scene... due to our great chemistry. [While I didn't realize it while we were filming], when I saw the footage, I thought that it was cute.

Q: If you were to work in an office like Wonyoung, which department would you work in?

The public relations department. I think that I'd be good at doing public relations. The old me would not have been able to do it well, but the present me would probably do pretty well?

Q: What's a charming point of Wonyoung that you don't have?

At times, he's cute as a puppy. At other times, he's very cool. Since Wonyoung and I are similar in many ways, it's difficult to name our differences. Wonyoung's bravery is one of his great charms. He has the bravery to express his innermost feelings, which is something I still struggle with. I think that Wonyoung is cool because he's very honest when the situation calls for it.

Q: What was the hardest scene to film?

In the beginning, there's a scene where Wonyoung has to run very hard. To film that scene, I had to run for several hours. That was the most difficult scene for me.

Q: How would you describe Unintentional Love Story in five words? 올해는 이거 (this year, this is the one)

Q: What was it like visiting Nam Young-gwan*?

Since I had previously only seen Seowon hyung's home on TV, it was very fascinating and almost as if I were stepping onto a film set. He decorated his home really well, so it's nice and cozy.

The drama is called Unintentional Love Story. My character, Ji Wonyoung, is wrongly accused of something and has to find the other main character Yoon Taejoon to clear his name.

What's the filming status?

Filming is complete, and the teaser photos have already been released. The drama should be out early this year, sometime after January.

Where can we watch it?

I think that it'll be announced very soon.

What is something we should focus on in the drama? Gongchan's handsomeness?

Of course, that's part of it. (laughs) The chemistry between the cast members is very good. So please pay attention to that.

How can we do that?

If you watch the drama, you'll be able to notice our chemistry, which is really good.

The atmosphere on set must have been very good?

The set was full of smiles, and the laughter never ended.

2023/01 YOURVIBES Interview (Gongchan)

There’s a lot of excitement for Unintentional Love Story. Even though we finished filming a month ago, I still feel like I'm living as Wonyoung. I keep in touch and often meet up with the other cast members. A while ago, we even went to a photo booth together. I wish I could capture the feelings and atmosphere of each moment. So, I suggested using photos to capture the present moment. I worked hard to edit Seowon hyung, who is currently in the military, into the photos myself. (laughs)

Who was the mood maker on set? Seowon hyung was the mood maker. When we first started filming, I was quite nervous and he helped me a lot. He also joked around often and helped soften the atmosphere. Despite also having much on his plate, hyung took good care of me, for which I’m very grateful. Hyung is easy to talk to, and we have a similar sense of humor. When one of us played a prank on the other, the other would reciprocate with an ever bigger prank. I can still vividly hear him saying, “Channie Channie, aren’t you quite the trickster?” after I pranked him.

Have you seen many related works? I watched several shows and movies that are loved by the audiences for inspiration and to learn from them. I have seen Call Me By Your Name, Semantic Error, and Cherry Magic. It. I read the original webtoon of Unintentional Love Story, which felt very new to me since it was my first experience with this genre, and I thought it was very interesting. It warmed my heart to see the characters like a person regardless of their gender, approach them, open up their heart to them, and heal their wounds.

I’m curious about the chemistry between the two of you. We work together very well. It’s almost like we are Wonyoung and Yoon Taejoon in the flesh, which is why the set was always filled with laughter.

Do you have any predictions about how the series will do? Not yet. (laughs) Of course, I hope that it does well. I think that if even viewers new to BL enjoy our show, it can be considered a success.

Who are you most grateful to? I’m most grateful to Seowon hyung. After we finished filming, hyung apologized for not being able to take better care of me. However, from my point of view, he was the first person to take such great care of me while filming. Hyung saying sorry to me made me feel even more apologetic and grateful toward him. Looking back, the days I went for filming were the days I got to see hyung, so I always felt very happy. I’m very grateful to him for always taking such good care of me.

Nov/Dec 2022 Mag & Jina Interview (Do Woo)

You'll be meeting fans through the drama Unintentional Love Story. Since the drama is based on a very popular webtoon, it'll get compared to the webtoon, which probably puts quite a bit of pressure on you.

After the cast was finalized in July, the director and the cast got together whenever possible to prepare for the drama. I tried to play the character of Donghee in a way that won't disappoint the fans of the webtoon. If you pay attention to how my charms and Donghee's charms fit together in the drama, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it even more.

What did you focus on the most when preparing for the role of Kim Donghee?

Most of the characters in Unintentional Love Story have their flaws. Donghee is no exception, and I worked hard to express this properly. In particular, while Donghee is a very playful character, his emotions vary greatly depending on the person he's interacting with, and he has a wide emotional spectrum. Thus, I thought a lot about how to express his different emotions distinctly. Additionally, I changed my appearance to better resemble Donghee so that it'll be easier for viewers to immerse themselves in the drama.

Have you read the webtoon that the series is based on?

I finished the entire webtoon before I went in for my audition. I went into my audition thinking, "I have to get the part of Donghee." (laughs) Additionally, the character of Donghee runs a café by the ocean, and I also worked at a café in Yangyang near the beach for a short while last year. Since I had a similar experience, I could portray the role more naturally. During the audition, I worked hard to show how similar Donghee and I were, and it seemed like the director noticed it.

Will we get to see many scenes of you playing a barista in this series? There aren't that many, but seeing as Donghee runs a café, you will get to see me making drinks. Because I have experience working in a café and preparing drinks, I was able to play the character of Donghee more naturally. My experience working at a café definitely helped me.

In Unintentional Love Story, what new sides of actor Do Woo can we look forward to?

In the past, I mostly played cynical characters or villains. In contrast, Donghee is very outgoing, loves to tease others, and has huge emotional swings. Thus, in the drama, you'll get to see me smile and laugh a lot. Donghee is also the mood maker, so the audience will get to see a new side of me through this show,

2023 is right around the corner. What do you wish for the new year?

I hope that Unintentional Love Story does well and that I'll be able to greet audiences with more varied projects. Most importantly, I hope that we're all healthy in 2023.

You've been cast as Yoon Taejun, one of the main leads of the BL drama Unintentional Love Story. As this is your first time acting in a BL drama, did you feel a lot of pressure?

I'm the type of person who doesn't get scared about trying something new. As Unintentional Love Story is a melodrama, if I can follow the emotions well, coupled with my chemistry with Gongchan, I should be able to act well enough. So, I don't feel too much pressure. I feel more pressure from the sense of responsibility I have about establishing my character and creating a good drama rather than from acting itself. Thus, I worked hard to reduce this pressure.

Why did you choose Unintentional Love Story as your next drama?

The quality of a show is very important to me. Thus, after I received the script for Unintentional Love Story, I read the webtoon that it is based on in its entirety. I thought that the story was very solid and really looked forward to the chemistry between Gongchan and myself. I met him for the first time through this drama, and since then, we have become very close. He's a very adorable person.

Through your portrayal of Yoon Taejun in Unintentional Love Story, the audience will get to see a new side of your acting. What in particular should the audience look for?

First, I'm playing a very different character from the one I played in my previous drama. To illustrate, Yoon Taejun is a pottery maker who has an unorganized side. For example, sometimes there's clay on his clothes. Acting-wise, in the previous drama I was in, the characters' relationship developed because of a huge incident. However, in Unintentional Love Story, you get to witness how the two protagonists change as their relationship develops.

Are there any particularly memorable moments from the filming of Unintentional Love Story?

While I was reading my script in the pottery studio we were using as the filming location, two women walked into the studio. I thought that they were staff members that I had never met before, so I continued reading my script. But, when I overheard them saying that they had come to the studio to purchase some pottery, I was very shocked. As it had already been five minutes since they entered the studio, I contemplated whether I should inform them that the studio was being used as a filming location. So, I thought to myself that this would be an interesting memory I would never forget and decided to purchase pieces of pottery to give them as gifts. However, they ended up just leaving. Therefore, I was neither able to gift them pottery nor inform them that the pottery studio was being used as a filming location in a drama, and I was the only one who was aware of the whole incident. (laughs)
