I've just made a tremendous discovery!!

Whether intentionally or not, Huxley never mentioned that there was another active Daylighter tumbling on here?!

I’m not entirely sure what his story is, but there seems to be a wealth of information on his account- especially concerning Nocturns. I have to find out more, but it’s way past curfew and I’m stuck at home with no one to talk to about this. I suppose I could always post my findings here…

I could be on the brink of great discoveries! Life is so sheltered here in the upper Daylighter sectors- it’d be great to get to see things from a different, more all-encompassing perspective.

Hello! I see you’re a friend of Huxley’s. We just met not too long ago. He seems to be a very passionate person. I never knew anything about the Unity Party until recently, so it’s nice to know that there is another person out there that I can talk to. So few Horizon citizens are on these old social media sites. I’m so glad we are able to connect this way!

Hello! I know- it's been ages since I've...um...tumbled (I think that's the term) what with the proposition passing and all. The Party's been scrambling a bit, but yes- it's a pleasure to finally speak with you! I've been keeping up with your videos for a while now, and I really must thank you. Being able to see what daily life is like from the other side has made a far greater impact on me than mere word of mouth. I know Huxley can come off a bit...strong, but I assure you his passion is authentic. He's been that way for as long as I've known him. Anyways, I'd love to continue communicating this way- whether it be about the Party, your videos, books- you name it!

I finally met Huxley. He told me about a group that he is a part of called the Unity Party. They have their own YouTube account. You can watch his videos here.

I can't believe Huxley was actually able to track you down...well, actually I can. He has a history of popping up unexpectedly... I should know. And despite his dramatic tendencies, Huxley is being 100% sincere. We don't need to destroy what already exists. We need to start by making small changes- from the way we address one another to looking beyond the stereotypes and daring to know someone further. Only through education and an open mind can we hope to accomplish any sort of change. It won't be immediate, but if done right- it can be lasting. That is what the Unity Party believes in- what I myself believe in. I know what it's like to feel trapped between two very different worlds. So...keep an open mind Horizons.

Okay I couldn’t figure out how to reply to this before, but someone on tumblr told me what to do. I just wanted to say thank you very much for your help! I started using the tags so we’ll see if makes a difference when people are looking for my posts. I wonder if I should put my name in the tags so that they can find me specifically? Well for now I’ll just put in keywords from whatever I say in the posts.

Books!

I found an image in the Archives of a tunnel of books. I made it into my header image. Doesn’t it look amazing? There are so few printed books in good condition anymore. My copy of The Hobbit is my most precious possession. 

I might change the header image later, but at least it’s not polka dots any more.

I tried to figure out how to answer directly, but it wasn’t working. So I just figured I would do this instead. 

Hello tumblr user! You must be a citizen of one of the other Survivor Cities. Nice to meet you! To clarify, we do have books. In fact we have a dedicated cyber Archive with many books from the world pre-Disasters. However, at least in our city, we have a limited supply of printed books left. The city had one pre-existing library as well as a few small school libraries, and citizens did and still do own their own printed copies of books. When the Disasters hit, people had to pack up as quickly as possible and flee to the nearest safe zone. I’m sure you had many new citizens that had to abandon their homes and move into your town. As you would expect, not a lot of people brought books with them, as they weren’t typically considered part of the “essentials” needed in order to survive. They also often assumed they wouldn’t have to bring them because many books were already online by that point, so a tablet or other device would be enough. It’s understandable, but still a shame that we lost so many printed copies. 

Perhaps you had the means to continue printing books near you, but it took a while before we were able to do so again. With most texts being available online, it just wasn’t a priority. Our resources were needed elsewhere. We can currently print and bind books, but it’s not done without reason, and it’s just not the same as the old days. My first edition copy of The Hobbit is well over a century and a half old. (Maybe closer to two centuries? I can’t remember.) It’s priceless and I take very good care of it. Not everyone shares my passion for the printed word, and a lot of books have become damaged over the years. Our library and Archive has done a decent job taking care of their supply and re-printing copies as needed, but with a tablet in hand you can read just about anything. So seeing an image of a tunnel’s worth of different printed and bound books looks like heaven. I would have loved to live in a time where there were bookstores and libraries everywhere. Did you know you could even order books online and have a fresh copy delivered to your home that you would own without anyone else having read it first? Apparently it was very easy. Getting a fresh copy of a book now is such a hassle. Finding pre-Disaster copies is rare. If your city is fully stocked with pre-Disaster prints then I envy you. 

This might be actually be a good opportunity to learn a little more about other Survivor Cities. Do any of you have printed copies of books that you cherish? Please tell me about them! Or even take a picture. I would love to see what you have. This could be very informative.

I second this. The Erikson vault has a number of printed works, but only a handful of which are pre-Disaster. My all-time favorite would probably be "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodson Burnett. Something about it seized my imagination as a child and just wouldn't let go. The fact it's over 150 years old still astonishes me today.

Thanks for the reply! I don’t have a whole lot of printed books either - I’ve moved a lot since I was 12 so I too put most of my books on my various electronic devices. However I do have a few cherished books:

These copies of Jane Austen’s novels date from at least the 1970′s. We found them in our attic and I’m not sure where they came from but I love them because they have some old names and annotations in, they have beautiful covers and they have that perfect old book smell. Also, I love Austen.

Also our family has a very old Bible as a heirloom. It’s too old to take out and get a picture (although we’re not sure quite how old it is) but it has spaces for names of family members and their dates of birth etc. in the front, and the earliest dates are from the 1850′s!

Wow! I can’t believe you found the entire set of Jane Austen books in your attic. What an amazing discovery! I love Austen’s writing. We have a copy or two of her books in my grandparent’s vault, but they aren’t first editions or anything. I also bought a copy of Pride and Prejudice from one of my professors, but it was printed in the early 2000s. She sold it to me because she has one of those really big books that is all of Austen’s work in one. I think she also has another that is a collection of works by the Brontës, and a third with plays and sonnets by Shakespeare. Apparently she had an ancestor that loved purchasing those big sets of books.

I too love that old book smell. And as for annotations, I both love and hate it when people write on books. Part of me thinks “No, please don’t ruin the pages!” but then another part of me is absolutely fascinated by what they’ve written and the fact that they had no concerns about it because they could always purchase a new copy. 

Gosh, the 1850′s! You own a piece of history. Our Archives would love to see something like that. If we ever improve cross-city communications, an archivist would probably contact you about scanning your Bible. That’s what they did with my copy of The Hobbit. They would be extra careful, I’m sure. No need to take it out for me (though I would love to see it someday). I understand how important it is to take care of antiques.

For those of you that don’t live here, this is the email I received about the new propositions. If you do live here then please vote no on Prop 7. This one line could change a lot of people’s lives, and not necessarily for the better like Noah thinks.

I am appalled. Utterly appalled. How could our representatives let things get this far?? I thought…I thought we were finally making some progress in lessening the divide. Obviously, I was wrong. Please, PLEASE vote against Proposition 7. So many lives will be torn apart of this passes- mine included. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who shares these sentiments.
