Another image of work that I couldn’t post before.
Here are some other works I enjoyed. Unfortunately there were some that couldn’t be photographed, such as videos and photography by Ana Mendieta. who I really enjoy. I did like the show however, I enjoy learning about new artists and being able to be inspired by works that I admire. Some of the works were so powerful, and the women who created them weren’t afraid to show themselves in the most intimate and private ways. Conveying their identity, and a sense of freedom that was refreshing.
This piece had to be one of my favorite works from all of the galleries I visited. In this specific area of the exhibit which I believed was the finale of all the works. Had the most thought provoking and provocative works of art. This is where I believe radical comes from in the title of the show. To see such works of art like this one here by women, especially during the time they were made is such a bold statement. It’s daring and conveys a sense of freedom, it really makes you think. I spent a while reading each sentence here and thinking about what each sentence meant to me. The material and the color stood out to me, but so did the repeated use of La Femme’.
There was also another gallery which showcased work from German artist Andrea Buttner. This woodcut print was really cool to me, because I have done printmaking with wood blocks and we learned the process of printing with actual stumps of wood. So I really enjoyed seeing the wood texture in this piece. Although my camera doesn’t do it justice
In this piece a woman confines her self inside a ball of clay, representing a womb like structure and acts as a tomb almost. The act of breaking through of the clay structure is the ending in the series of photographs as the artist lays down having destroy the ball like shape and collapsing on the floor. I enjoyed the idea of using your body as apart of the art, I thought it as a really bold choice.
This image is video that played on a continuous loop, which depicted two artists from Venezuela Jennifer Hackshaw and Maria Luisa Gonzalez. In the beginning of the video both women has mud covering their face. As it continues the mud drys, all while both women never close their eyes. In a sort of meditation, both women stare and barely move as the drying process continues. I thought this was interesting because it conveys a connection between the body and skin. I thought this piece was interesting because of how difficult it is to hold your eyes open and stare in one direction for any amount of time.
I decided to attend the Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985 exhibit located at the Hammer Museum. I always enjoy finding and being able to learn about new artists, especially women. Because I feel like I don’t see enough art by women, more specifically women of color. The first piece that I connected with was this set of photographs by Mexican artist Lourdes Grobet. To me it was representational of a birth scene, as the artist emerges from the sheer film. Almost as if it was rebirth, stepping out of a new dimension.
I think I was really fascinated with this womb like recreation, depicting a opening that almost mimics the vaginal opening. The idea that the artist is breaking through was also something I found interesting, as she puts herself into her own photography. This really embodied what the whole gallery conveyed as most of the art on this side had to do with the female form and the body.
The beginning of a basket I’m making for my sculpture class. Will post the outcome, because I’m using a lot of fiber and textiles in my final.

Cocoon From empty vessel to bad ass suit. My journey from beginning to end of this piece was something very important and interesting to me. It was cool to be able to see the process that I took and the different iterations that came from one idea. I tweaked my original process to be able to incorporate something that could move in a space and become its own entity. I wanted everyone to be able to wear this suit as a protective armor, from the world. I picked my model Caroline because to me she embodies this anti feminine sentiment, while still maintaining her ideals of a women. She doesn’t adhere to the typical standards which I love, she marches to the beat of her own drum. I wanted someone who represented their true self to wear the suit that hides their body and identity, but the slit in the middle lets you see their own identity. I find it interesting seeing pictures from the beginning to end of what I created, and how I continued to push myself further.
Architecture Reflected in Water
A selection of photographs in which reflections in water is used as the main compositional element. This is a recreation of the original RSVP series, where Senga and another dancer activated the sculpture with movement and dance. Here the original dancer that she partnered with in the 70’s is activating the piece.
