Brenda dreams to sew!
by Patricia Olivet
Growing up as a child wasn’t an easy thing for Brenda. She had 14 siblings and it was very hard for her parents to sustain them all. Her mother was a child herself when she had her first kid. She was only 13 years old. - “My grand parents couldn’t take care of her then, so it was what she had to do: make a family of her own with a man who would give her a better life” - she says. Of course, the term “better life” becomes very relative. It is extremely difficult to find a difference between a life with parents who can’t support you anymore and a life with a man who will probably abuse you and make you take care of him for years to come. Which one is the better life?
When Brenda was little she remembers her three older siblings got very sick to their stomach. They had no access to a hospital since they lived away from the city and one by one they all passed away. What she does remember is that she was afraid she was going to die next. She then became her mother’s oldest child.
By the time she turned 16 she got married and after that she had 4 kids. She tried to take care of them as best as she could since she was very worried they were going to get sick one day the same way her three siblings did. One day she was working out in the field near her house when one of her kids tripped on a bucket full of water. They have no access to water at home, so they collect rainwater in buckets. By the time she came to help him, the baby had already fainted. He had his head in the bucket. She ran to the closest bus stop but it was all in vain. Her son died after a few hours because just like her mother, she didn’t have any access to a hospital. This has been a nightmare for Brenda ever since.
- “If I could make a wish, it would be to have access to a hospital and a school so my children could get an education and a place to come whenever they get sick” - She shares. - “I wasn’t able to go to school but it would be a dream come true to see one of my children graduate high school”
When we asked her if she had a dream of her own she said it would be to own a sewing machine and learn how to make clothes for her children.
