Aujourd’hui est la journée international de la francophonie! D’être francophone au Canada est à la fois une privilège et une galère. Nous luttons encore pour l’égalité et vu que j’appartiens à une communauté minoritaire, je me sens à la fois très chanceux et très frustré. Si seulement le Gouvernement de l’Alberta pouvait mieux reconnaître la belle langue de Molière…. Cependant, la francophonie albertaine démure belle. C’est une communauté forte,diverse et accueillante et j’en suis fier.

« Promenades sur l’eau » est un spectacle de mode pour les océans. Afin de sensibiliser l’ensemble de la population vancouveroise sur l’importance de l’industrie de mode sur notre rapport avec les océans, « Promenades sur l’eau » a mis en vedette six créatrices et créateurs de vêtements canadiens partageant leurs collections inspirantes par l’océan (soit dans la conceptualisation de leurs vêtements, soit en choisissant les tissus de leurs créations, soit en intégrant l’océan dans l’éthique de leur marque). 

Dédié aux connaissances des océans et la santé des océans, « Promenades sur l’eau » avait pour but de démontrer que:

vous pouvez connecter avec l’océan dans votre propre manière, même si c’est seulement par les vêtements que vous achetez

la mode et l’industrie de la mode peuvent être véhicule du changement culturel au niveau de notre façon d’interagir avec les océans et la nature. Il faut faire des partenariats pluridisciplinaires.

Nos réussites Nous avons sensibilisé plus de 120 personnes qui y ont assisté. Les participant(e)s soucieux(ieuses) de l'environnement ont vu leur point de vue élargi sur la manière dont la mode peut faire une énorme différence au rapport que notre société entretien avec l’environnement. Celles et ceux qui sont venu(e)s pour le spectacle de mode ont été exposé(e)s à des idées sur la manière dont leur passion peut conduire au changement environnemental positif. 

Nous avons intégré la diversité sous de nombreuses formes lors de notre événement. L’événement était bilingue afin d’accueillir la communauté franco-colombienne; nous avions des mannequins de différentes ethnies, origines et religions qui présentaient les vêtements; nous avons assuré un espace sûr pour les membres de la communauté LGBTQ + par l'élément de la mode. L’événement était conceptualisé, organisé et livré par des jeunes ayant moins de 30 ans.

Le plus gros succès du projet a été la manière dont nous avons mis ensemble de multiples secteurs pour atteindre un objectif commun. Nous avons mis en valeur et souligné notre secteur de la mode local, en reconnaissant l’importance de soutenir les artistes et les industries proches de chez nous. Nous avons envoyé un message fort sur l'importance de la conservation des océans à notre public dans un nouveau format. En adoptant une approche novatrice en matière de promotion de l’amour et de la protection de nos océans, nous avons réussi à prêcher au non-converti(e)s. Nous avons ouvert la porte à la possibilité d'actions interdisciplinaires et innovantes pour un monde meilleur. 

L'un des plus grands résultats concrets de notre événement était une nouvelle collection. Vestige Story a créé, inspirée par l'événement et se sentant encore plus engagée pour les océans, un look book présentant une nouvelle collection bleue, blanche et brune claire (représentant les vagues frappant le rivage), ainsi avec des tissus qui peuvent se dégrader facilement dans l’environnement - aucun fibre synthétique. PhD

Je viens de terminer le dernier cours de ma maîtrise, ce qu’il reste est de faire la recherche pour un an afin d’écrire un mémoire. À ce moment dans mon voyage que j’appel la vie, j’ai envie de savoir ce que je ferai après. La vie est un jeu de chance; c’est une façon de vivre, sans le destin ou ce qui est digne de passer va se passer, mais avec une série de circonstances qui se mêlent d’ouvrir une voie, ou plusieurs voies, devant vous. 

Ma vie maintenant me montre trois voies principales et infiniment des voies qu’on peut toujours trouver:

1) Travailler

2) Doctorat

3) Gap year

et entre les trois, j’ai choisi de faire un doctorat parce que je veux bien terminer mes études avant je commence dans le « vrai monde » et m’amorce à monter les échelles. Je veux avoir une carrière et je ne veux pas que ma manque de formations m’empêche à n’importe quel pas. Pourquoi pas un gap year? Parce que je ne sais pas ce que je ferai avec moi-même ; je n’ai pas l’habitude d’être sans projet et j’ai peur d’arrêter de bouger. J’ai peur à l’idée de ne rien avoir à faire. J’ai peur d’éxister dans une façon passive.

Donc, voilà mes pensées à ce croisement dans la rue. On va voir ce qui va se passer dans l’avenir, on va voir où cette voie me prendre. Tout dont je peux souhaiter est que je sois heureux.

Orchestre

One of my favourite TV shows is back - Chef’s Table, and the first episode features une moine coréenne qui parle du « saveur de la nature » and already I am feeling incredibly inspired. The absolute beauty that goes into opening your heart and soul to the natural world such that even the food you eat is an expression of your soul in harmony with the world around you.... that is incredible.  

She talks about how life is an orchestra in harmonie with nature, how you are linked to the world around you such that every whisper in the wind is a kiss on the neck. The transcendant beauty of her words as they touched my soul and provoked memories of myself standing at a stream listening to the radio on my ipod but feeling connected with the world around me.

I had been feeling restless all day and the weather was beautiful. It was scorching hot, at least 30°C, and I could feel my body craving the world outside. I showered and threw on a pair of white shorts (I don’t pretend to understand why my eye refused to leave those shorts) and headed out. No shirt, a pair of headphones, my ipod (no phone), and a pair of flip flops.

Calgary is an amazing city in that the downtown area has a beautiful park where you forget you are even in a city when you walk in. I am there, in this incredible heat, with absolutely no plan, listening to Radio-Canada and letting my mind and my eyes dance around as they saw fit. I got fabulously lost. Lost physically and lost in my thoughts. It is like my entire existence suddenly got bigger, I was no longer just Chúk, I felt like I was the air, the sun, the trees, the grass, the insects.... I was Chúk, but Chúk in the world.

You know when you play an instrument and it harmonises with the instruments around it... orchestre... you are you, but you are also the orchestra. That is how that moment felt. Je me suis senti comme Pohacontas, j’ai eu l’envie de chanter « l’air du vent » and it was magical. Orchestre.

2016

It feels so good to finally smile at the memory of a year - it has been a long time coming and I have been craving this feeling for quite a while. This year, the world has been good to me... this year, for the first time in a long time, I feel like I have grown, though how much is beyond me. 

I started off this year working an amazing job (Operations Manager) with a wonderful team and an amazing boss. I had finally sensitised the team to me, I did not wake in fear of losing my job and I was... comfortable. I knew what I was doing when I went in to work and I knew I did it well. Opportunities started appeared on my lap (which is different from the usual me going out looking for them). In no particular order:

I got to visit a friend in Yellowknife, NWT, where we went mushroom hunting, I was in a private plane, and just had a wonderful time (thanks Chloe!). I got invited to and attended the wedding of one of the most amazing women in my life and her fiancée (now wife). I watched my cousin graduate from university (well done Chinakwu!)

I got into two of the largest (and very well ranked) universities in Canada, picked one to attend and moved across the country in September to get that started. I successfully completed my first semester in my second language :O and I do not hate my grades. 

Got the Nature Playbook published [http://www.parks-parcs.ca/french/nature-playbook.php] after over a year of heping work on it. Got invited to the Salzburg Global Seminar Session on transboundary cooperation [http://www.salzburgglobal.org/calendar/2010-2019/2016/session-571.html] as a paid Rapporteur 

Landed a job with my favourite retailer [frankandoak.com] 

I mean... it is really just a list that fills me with so much joy, and while some not great stuff happened this year, none of it is memorable, none of it stands out... and that just gives me so much joy. It has been so long since I have had a year where I can honestly say it has been a good year, and this year has been a good year. 

On my birthday, my best friend bought me a trip to the Czech Republic. A TRIP. CZECH REPUBLIC. I was so overwhelmed with joy - it was literally the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.

And this year... I landed a hometown... a response to give when asked “where are you from?”

2016 was amazing for me, and I really want to ensure that 2017 is equally as wonderful if not better.
