Storms River Mouth is a place in the heart of majestic forests stretching across Tsitsikamma mountain range in the Southern Africa. It is also a part of the world famous Garden Route known as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. This place is stunningly beautiful with lots of activities starting from hiking along the coastal line to see the grand Waterfall Tsitsikamma to paddling, kayaking and other adventures. The most beautiful waves I have seen is to be found along the Otter Trail hike. The waves can reach a few meters in height. The ever changing light creates an always-in-transition color palette of blues and greens that raise above the darker surface of the ocean. (at Stormsrivier, Eastern Cape, South Africa)

Hippos skin is very sensitive and dries out almost instantly when they are in the sun. But the nature created an answer for them. They produce a special pink liquid that serves them as a form of a sun cream. It fils up their pores to prevent the water loss and block some of the ultraviolet light. (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

Hippos are often fighting and quite nervous by nature. They love security and comfort and therefore usually sleep and stay close to each other. At the same time, the short temper serves them as a perfect recipe for braking out a fight. These fights usually can last a few seconds but nevertheless they could be devastating and sometimes even fatal. (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

Hippos are closely related to dolphins and whales and therefore when they asleep, one half of their brain is awake, so even when they are in the water, it doesn’t seem to be a big challenge for them. However, they do prefer to stay in more shallow parts of the water if not on the river bank, just like the group of hippos I observed here. (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

Apparently, hippos can’t swim. I only learned it when I was observing a baby hippo jumping up and down in the deep waters to get enough air to stay under the water for up to five minutes. They open their nostrils when above the water and close when underneath. How interesting is that!? (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

There is something undeniably charming and fascinating about these animals, don’t you agree, even when they look provoked and angry. Male hippos are highly territorial and will defend their areas from anyone who comes nearby, while females will defend their offsprings if anyone comes between them and the baby just like any other female animal. Hippos are extraordinary creatures. They are the beloved characters in many cartoons and children books as well as by me, yet they are among the most dangerous animals in the world as they are highly aggressive and unpredictable. Back in times there were more members of hippopotamidae family, but today there are only two species left. They used to exist not only in Africa but also Middle East and Europe. Due to human expansion and climate change, today they live only in Africa. (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

A group of banded mongooses were crossing the road in the park area of St Lucia. At first they were curious but quickly became alert as I came out of the car with the camera. The banded mongoose is widespread in Southern Africa and has a distinctive dark stripes across its back. St Lucia is one of the most astonishing places I have been where one can see so much wildlife without leaving the town. (at St Lucia)

Giraffes are fascinating animals. I love the way they move their body on those long spindly legs, their big eyes with long and sick eyelashes and beautiful pigmented coat patters. They have incredible long tongues up to 50 cm that helps them gently reach the leaves from the most difficult places. (at Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal)

The largest population of hippos to be found in South Africa 🇿🇦 is in iSimangaliso Wetland Park and St Lucia. The area is inhabited with around 800 hippos and most of times you get to see them if you are observant as they spend most of their time during the day beneath the water surface only having nostrils popping out in the water. The male weavers build incredible hanging palm and grass nests that they use to attract playful females by hanging on them and hovering with their bright yellow wings. Then they go onto and build a new nest for each new female ending up with many nests each housing a female simultaneously in one area. (at iSimangaliso Wetland Park)

African golden weaver. A common weavers of the South-East Africa. I saw these playful colorful birds for the first time here, in the marshy wetlands of St Lucia on a cruise along the river. They are known for assembling incredible nests of grass and palm leaf strips. (at St Lucia SA)
