Not to mention that other Dracula adaptation since 1992 has been the same exact plot about Dracula having a Reader Insert wife who is actually reincarnated Mina blah blah. Dracula did not even love anyone in the book to justify 20 movies about how much he loves the character who is his personal victim in the source material, Carmilla at least had very intense and clear declarations of Love towards Laura. You can make your dark vampire love story out of this instead but no they are too lesbian for that I guess.
Sighs* yeah, honestly, I wanna open this discussion, is it just me or is female vampirism always brushed aside as a consequence of the male center vampirism and for consequence, violently discarded in the narratives.
Dracula is always so mischaracterized to be this super romantic tragic gothic hero, but he's just not, he's literally one of the biggest examples of the evil vampire in a more simplistic form, he genuinely sucks in a, he does very violent actions towards his victims as a consequence of his desire to cause harm, he doesn't love Mina, I genuinely don't know where that romance came from and it's like ugh, vampires are so romantic, but they choose one of the least romantic ones to retell a romantic interpretation over and over again it's just so annoying. Let Dracula be the evil monster, mer Carmilla be the complex romantic dark vampire love story.
Carmilla is the prime example of a very deeply passionate romantic vampire that falls into tragedy at the end and that spends all the book in an emotional longing desire for the protagonist.
Camilla is genuinely one of my favorite vampire media of all time, even it's more than confusing retelling The vampire lovers from the 70s is deeply alluring and psychosexually charged with desire in a very emotional and frankly beautiful way. I can appreciate the lesbianism in the movie, but it is probably framed in a horrific way, but I enjoy the irony.
The movie has a lot of problems, the violent treatment of Carmilla being one, but overall, the way she's portrayed is so sublime, so beautiful.
Carmilla is so gentle yet so aggressive, with a very direct way of speaking and a passion that drives one to feel it through her every action.
I want a Carmilla adaptation so bad, I'd do anything for it.
