Splendor is a game for 2-4 players about collecting gems and getting RIIIIICH! Splendor is also the game I most often first play with someone who has never played a modern board game. Because once someone has played Splendor, they’re hooked.
The game is simple. On your turn you either take some gems (in the form of lovely, weighted poker chips), or you turn in gems for a card from the middle, adding it to your collection. That’s it. The cost of the card is listed on the bottom left. Some cards are worth points, and the first player to get 15 points wins.
The cool part is once you own a card, it’s like having a permanent chip that you never have to give up. So as your collection of cards grows, you’re soon getting more cards for free! And who doesn’t like free?!
Part of what’s great about this game is you get something every turn. You’re always getting. It’s like shopping. The tension comes from the fact that you’re racing for points. The more efficient you are, the better you’ll do. There are even 3-point bonus tiles (nobles) that you can try to get before other other players.
But this is a game that is super enjoyable even if you don’t win. And I think that’s a big part of its appeal. There’s even an expansion called Cities of Splendor that adds some variety, if you feel you need that. But the base game stands up on its own.
If you’re curious, there’s an excellent app version (with solo challenges even). It’ll definitely make you a better player at the game, because the AI can be tough.
