Narcissa.
Narcissa was almost relieved when she saw Rodolphus’ face as the one that she had bumped into. For a second, she thought she might have bothered Sirius himself and that thought made her want to run away from this whole situation even more. Running a hand through her hair, straightening back her blonde locks, Narcissa managed to smile at him, not winningly, or convincingly, but at least it was a smile. Her mother would be proud, if she were not swimming in this news herself.
“Don’t worry,” she said, waving her hand at his apology. Simple sorry’s did not really matter now anyway. They couldn’t. “I do not think anyone was told.” She sucked in a deep breath, eyes scanning the crowd once more for a familiar set of dark hair and did not see any. Lowering her gaze, her voice, Cissa shook her head, but it was not because she was saying no. She was merely just as confused as he was.
“If I had my guess he’d back because of his cause,” Narcissa sneered at the word, knowing full well just what was going on here: another pureblood man uncaring of the people who might have cared for him. “Surely he’s not back because he cares about any of us. He’s back because he wants something for himself. Happy is not the word I would use to describe myself, right now.”
She cleared her throat, eyebrows raising. “Are you? Happy, that is.”
Studying Narcissa, Rodolphus found himself wishing it was as easy to communicate with Bellatrix as it was with Narcissa. Narcissa he could genuinely talk to. Instead of dance around it the younger Black just said what she thought and how she felt and that was what Rodolphus could work with. Bellatrix, he guessed, had to have left the party by now. She had to be upset by the news. As ever, the first remark coming up in his head upon realizing that was a snide one (that she should find her solace with the person she always did instead of him because he wasn’t in the mood) and he sighed a little at that. He had to focus on Narcissa now. “I’m afraid you’re correct,” Rodolphus said, bringing up a hand to run through his hair in a gesture of stress. He shot a look around himself afterwards, as though to check the subject of their conversation was nearby. He didn’t seem to be. “He left years ago because he didn’t fit into our society. He’s not magically going to fit in now, no matter how much your family wants that to happen.” What was next, was Andromeda going to walk through the doors of the manor? Would she be welcomed back too despite of betraying the family? The Blacks had lost it at last, it seemed, because Sirius’ return would not be appreciated by the rest of society.
He shook his head when Narcissa asked if he was happy. Why did people keep asking him that? “I don’t think anyone is thrilled to see Sirius back, Narcissa,” he said. “I have many reasons not to want him back here, trust me.” Not a single one he would disclose in this moment, of course. “But, more importantly: are you alright?” he continued, studying her closely. “I honestly can’t imagine how you feel right now.”
