Wow, when we first started this little project called the "AfroArt" series we never thought it would take off the way that it has. We started this proj ...
We are all full of natural beauty, we just need to bring it out. Regis and Kahran, a husband and wife team behind CreativeSoul did just that, only for young black ladies. Focusing on their hair, the duo created Afro Art, a series of gorgeous portraits that has cast a spell on everyone's eyes.

It was my first time attending Afropunk this year and it was everything I thought it would be an more. With amazing performances by SZA, Solange, Thundercat, Protoje and more it felt like a spiritual homecoming full to the brim with liberated, glowing and creative individuals. The best part of it all, the beautiful people I met and saw with their own unique styles and displays of individuality. Everyone looked beyond amazing. And so many different hairstyles! One in particular that stood out to me and seemed to be a common theme was flowers worn in the hair. And some were real flowers not the fake once you get at your local Hobby Lobby. Check out photos from the entire weekend event taken by Gretchen Robinette. Visit: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/afropunk-2017-saturday-pics-sza-princess-nokia-the-fashion-more/.
This is amazing!

A Letter to my Edges
Dear Edges,
Your love is fading and it’s all my fault. I’m sorry I put you through so much hell. The stress, pain and suffering. I didn’t realize the impact my actions would have on you. But still you held on strong through it all. I just couldn’t help it. Whipping my hair back and forth. The Poetic Justice braids. The big hair don’t care phase. While all along you were suffering in silence. And now I face the reality that you might someday leave me. Payback for my reckless actions and well deserved. But before you go just know this. I love you. I didn’t always show it but always have and always will. You complete me and we belong together. Please forgive me. I promise I’ll let you breath. I’ll let you grow. You and me against the world. I love you. Don’t go.
Love,
Deyonce
According to Atlanta Black Star, the natural hair movement is "dismantling the black salon industry."
Versatile Style with Elizabeth Ayeni
Kicking off the new year with another empowering hair interview. My amazing friend Elizabeth Ayeni, master of versatility, shares her hair journey with us.
Let see what she has to say:
Untamed Hair: How long have you been natural and what made you decide to take that big step?
Elizabeth: I've been natural for about 3 years. Besides the fact that I have sensitive skin... after receiving minor chemical burns every time my stylist gave me a relaxer I started thinking about making a change. The nail in the coffin was when the same stylist literally burned my sister's scalp causing her to have hair loss. We BOTH went natural after that.
U: Has this been a difficult transition and where there any challenges along the way?
E: I wouldn't say it's been difficult. The biggest obstacle is realizing I don't really have a "curl pattern" which means I have to do more "manipulation extensive" styles which in turn, I believe, stunt my hair length retention.
U: You definitely keep it fun and funky! I love all your hair styles. Which would you say is your favorite?
E: Right now, anything to involving crochet braids! Loooooooove them!
(Picture above) Crochet kinky twists. ..in totality, it took me about 8 hours because it takes me forever to cornrow and it was my first time installing weave in single braids form for the front of my hair... I literally searched YouTube for an hour! Lol
U: What are some of your favorite hair products?
E: Well it really depends on the style/look I'm trying to achieve but here are a few:
Murray's Edge Wax - for edge control
Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair - for deep conditioning
Jamaican Mango & Lime Island Oil - for scalp
Murray's Gel Loc-Lock - for holding locs, twists and braids
Olive Miracle anti-breakage oil & lotion
An encouraging example of embracing natural hair while keeping things fresh and fun! Thank you so much for sharing!
More Inspiration & Hair Sensation!
Ever since we were kids, I always remembered the fierce hair of my good friend Shantay Smith. After interviewing her sister Chanell who said "I learned everything about hair from my sister," I knew I had to get the 411 straight from the hair guru herself. So I asked Shantay to share her hair journey. Here's what she had to say:
I ventured out on my natural hair journey 24 months ago. I wasn't interested in the big chop so I chose the path of long term transitioning. My permed hair was fairly long so I still currently have 4 to 6 inches of permed ends in some places.
Like many little girls I got my first perm in elementary school and knew nothing else. My hair was always healthy even with getting perms because I always went to the salon for perms (ever 4 months) and got trims regularly. That being said my decision to grow my hair out of its relaxed state was not due to breakage or damage but simply a need for change.
Since embarking on this journey my go to hairstyle has to be the bun. High, low or to the side, I love my bun. I've also grown to love flat twist-outs, braid-outs and my new fave, curlformer sets. I recommend curlformers for every texture, natural or not, they produce THE BEST heatless curls.
I am a product junkie by nature with all things hair and makeup. My current holy grail hair products are, Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in, Aussie 3 minute miracle deep treatment, coconut oil, Aubrey Organics White Camilla Conditioner and Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter. As long as they continue to make these products, I will always have them in my stash.
My current routine is co-washing at least once a week with Tresseme Naturals conditioner or I'll shampoo with Shea Moisture Black Soap shampoo when needed. I deep condition with whatever product I'm using at the time or my old faithful, Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. I usually finger detangle with KC Knot Today and then seal with coconut oil. Depending on what style I'm doing will dictate the next step, for my usual bun, I'll slick my hair back with Eco Styler Gel and then tie my hair down overnight. If I'm doing a braid-out or a twist-out I always use CR Almond Jai Twisting Butter and religiously get bomb results.
One of these days I'll get around to trimming the rest of the permed ends but until then I'm loving my hair and all my different textures.
Fabulosity! Love it! Thanks for sharing Shantay!
"Fierce Hair" Highlight
"I learned it all from my sister!" Was the 1st response when I asked my friend Chanell Smith what the secret was to her full and healthy natural hair!
"I have been natural for 4 years and every month is a new struggle. It is a love/hate thing for me."
I can totally relate to that! But the pay off is worth it, her hair always looks amazing!
I also asked about hair regimen/products:
"I use a lot of Shea Moister Growth Milk, As I Am Double Butter, a Shea Butter mix by Black Onyx, Eco Styler, and lots of water!"
Love it! Thanks for sharing Chanell!

No Heat Curls
Section hair and two strand twist then wrap each twist around into little mini buns. How loose or tight the curls are will depend on the size of the little buns. You can use a light holding gel (non alcohol based) for each section if you want as long as it doesn't harden or flake. Tie with silk scarf over night.
In the morning, undo twists and use your fingers to separate.
The final look will depend on your hair type. I have type 4 hair that was already straightened with heat a few days before. For me this is an alternative to applying more heat to my hair. Plus the curly look is always a nice switch up!
