Don't wake the beast who slumbers (cat coded)
It is just me or is the way Katsukiās reaching out for Izukuās hand in Bakugou Katsuki Rising just so freaking⦠intimate? And yes I know, handholding is a big thing for them but Iām talking about how heās reaching out with his left hand, instead of his right hand.
I mean, if I wouldāve fallen down and someone holds their hand out to me, Iām pretty sure Iād always grab their hand with mine on the opposite side of my body.
That being said, I expected Katsuki to reach out with his right hand and the fact that he isnāt, makes it all way more intimate and couple-like ā at least to me.
Maybe itās just my shipper lenses but if someone takes your hand like that and you both stand up straight again, you could just walk on, hand in hand, no hand-switch needed or anything, and maybe Iām not making sense but the fact that Katsuki uses his left hand stuck out to me since I first saw Hori-sanās cover for Volume 29.
Here some more screenshots / official art because I love this chapter / episode so much. And because the art where Katsuki is still a kid just shows how he would've used his left hand either way, and the gauntlet on his right hand has nothing to do with it.
Here we go:
More Steampunk AU!
I had a bit of a story going with this tooā¦
______
Deku is a young and promising engineer, he was formed and trained by All Might who also built his mechanic arm. It incorporates one of All Mightās greatest inventions and only he and Deku know about it.
Deku grew up in the lower city with Katsuki, living as little thieves but also learning the basics of mechanics and working under the protection of Aizawa. When they were 13 they got caught in a big clash of two rival groups that caused the explosion of a building. This is where Deku lost his right arm, while trying to get Katsuki to escape and out of the way. On that occasion they part and both believe the other one is dead. All Might rescues him and decides to keep him as his apprentice, seeing great potential in doing work for good.
This is how Deku makes it to the upper city and he starts working in All Mightās mechanicās shop, where he learns to build ships and other devices and also makes it in UA Academy of Science, thanks to his teacherās name. He tells people to call him Deku, so no one in the upper city really knows his full name except for All Might and Katsuki.
Katsuki is an engineer too and a pirate.
He was the one finding and rescuing Deku when they were 8 and they stayed side by side until the explosion.
After the explosion he manages to escape and reunite with the gang he and Deku were already part of, but for his safety, Aizawa sends him far from the city with Best Jeanist who teaches him a lot of the job of the engineer and also makes him part of the crew of his pirate ship.
Since the accident Katsuki believes Deku is dead, and grows resentful of who caused this to happen and guilty for the fact that Deku was trying to save him when it all happened.
When he is a bit older, he builds his own ship and forms his little crew with which he flies around and starts to build his own name as a very skilled thief. Itās not his real life goal, he wishes to be the greatest engineer of all time, like All Might, and to change the world with his inventions. But a man has to eat so thatās how he makes money while also creating incredible devices and stuff.
One day he almost gets caught by the authorities. They are flying too close to the upper city and the ship gets targeted and shot down, but they manage to land it safely and temporarily hide it. The repairs are too big for just him and the bunch of non mechanics of his crew, and if they want to take off before it is found by the police they need some others to help. One of Katsukiās contacts gives him Dekuās name and at first, he is absolutely shocked and has to stop himself from beating the other guy for daring to say that name.
Katsuki is conflicted as it feels like this could be an ambush, even though he canāt understand how anyone might have gathered such personal information about him. Deku is something he has kept very much a secret about his past. Anyway he decides to go see for himself if this guy is legit or if itās some sort of sick joke.
When he reaches the mechanicās shop, the person he finds is most definitely not-so-little-anymore Deku. They reunite with a clash, very much grown and different from where they left each other, and absolutely emotionally constipated.
So, I've seen a lot of people getting mad at Bones for seemingly erasing bkdk moments and replacing them with Izu//ocha. As someone who began as an anime only and migrated over to the manga, I never really saw this though? I got bkdk vibes pretty fast, even when I was just watching the anime. Besides that, a lot of people forget that Bones has added shipping material for every ship, not just specific ones. They added the Kabedon (wall pound), and they also animate plenty of added little winks to the audience. I think a lot of them slip by the western audience though because I think they're more Japanese specific. I only found out because I was hungry for bkdk content and looked up the eastern side of the fandom and cultural meanings in Japan XD. Another person explained what Bones might actually be doing. Usually studios add shipping moments for multiple groups in the interest of making money, since animation is expensive. Due to this, they might be doing more filler for ships that don't have a whole lot of canon content, while moving ships that do get canon attention along through use of the plot. Idk, I just don't understand the arguments others have made. Bkdk is incredibly popular in Japan, Japan's culture on bullying means they don't (usually) have the same issues that we do with Katsuki himself, and they've added shipping moments for KiriBaku and bkdk, which means they're open to the idea. I think it's less discrimination and more about what makes sense monetarily. Business is really difficult to run, especially in the entertainment industry. Finally, for all people have complained about the distance, I noticed that in season 5 they started moving bkdk closer to each other in general. I also feel like the adding distance thing could come down to a lot of factors. They had a lot of moments of bkdk sitting next to each other or (in one case) outright leaning on each other, only to randomly be back to distance again. It could make a nice visual metaphor for how Bakugo has gotten closer to Deku, but is still internally rebelling against it. Idk, I feel like that could a lot of ways. All depends on how you view it.
Now, okay, hereās my take on this
Itās not necessarily bones as a company rather the audience they have to conform to. And they most definitely leave in a lot of bkdk scenes, yes, but thatās quite literally because they canāt go around it, not only for plot but also that like, unless you were completely clueless most people KNEW Katsuki was going to get a redemption or atonement arc of some kind. We just werenāt expecting horikoshi to make it so⦠romantic. And intimate.
Bones isnāt necessarily homophobic, the amount of kiri//baku scenes in the movies and in the show is undeniable. Ntm the fact that Rody and deku had a whole romantic song montage in their movie. But thereās a REASON why kiri//baku is seen as the āmost straight gay shipā and thatās simply because every other boy in the show (excluding Katsuki) has a āmain womanā if you will. Kaminari has jirou, kirishima has Mina (I know Iām contradicting but Iāll explain later), Izuku has ochako, etc etc.
My point is that the reason that Katsuki is never the one getting comments like ābakugou is straightā like they say ādeku is straightā is because he is the most queer mother fucker youāve ever seen. He doesnāt HAVE a love interest (see in Katsuki metaš) like every other boy does. Some people say itās camie but, letās be honest here, in every scene sheās in she doesnāt even pass the bechtel testļæ¼. The friend group is fun and awesome, and she teases him a lot, but, in reality, she just doesnāt have enough scenes or screen time to be a full character and develop out of a rare pair.
And bones is aware of this, just as the fandom is. Katsuki simply doesnāt have a woman to establish him as straight AND ALSO has a lot of queer coding by fitting the āgay delinquentā trope. Kirishima also fits a lot of the Japanese ideas of the āgay delinquentā. This, was entirely purposeful.
In a way bones, like many mha fans, fell for a lot of the bait hori threw and then even exaggerated it. Thereās this scene in the anime where ochako is changed to questioning why she likes Izuku and then says how sheās going to ālock away these feelingsā, but in the manga she says āwhat the hell am I doing? Heās trying his best to be a hero, I also need to try my best.ā This is paraphrasing ofc, Iād need to rewatch the scene and grab the panel but I donāt currently have access to my mha books. (Which is currently my only way of getting the official translations for older chapters lol)
In some cases, itās a stretch I wonāt lie. But, while bones isnāt exactly HOMOPHOBIC, it doesnāt change how bones tries to appeal to, ultimately, a bigger audience. Shonen needs a girl and boy ending and because mha is a shonen then it will have a girl and boy ending.
Another aspect is that homophobic fans just straight up hate Katsuki. Not only because theyāre usually bullied white boys that fell down the alt right pipeline, but also because Katsuki gets in the way of any of their straight ships. Heās competition for not only ochako but also Mina. And they donāt like that, but since they canāt be outwardly homophobic they just say that heās abusive or completely un redeemable. (Which is also weird bc these people tend to also like endeavor ?????? I donāt get it. Like, I like endeavor too but what)
Thereās no getting around Katsuki being a VERY queer coded character. Not only with Izuku but also with kirishima. Bones doesnāt want to take away from izu//ocha so they put their eggs into one basket; aka kiri//baku.
Anywho, thereās a reason why so many anti bkdk shippers are anime onlyās and thatās both because bkdk is ācringeā in mainstream media (thanks alt right pipeline) and also because a lot of the subtext and magic was lost. Ultimately, anime is just an adaptation. The only thing that REALLY matters IS the manga. So, in the case of bkdk being canon, thereās going to be an influx of anime onlyās that say that this wasnāt implied, rushed, he was forced, etc etc etc and they will ultimately just have to cope and cry and wine about it in their own pity party.
Yada yada, I kinda rambled, but yeah. I do think bones censors and then pushes a certain narrative. I donāt think this is necessarily a bad thing either since, well, like I said before, anime is an adaptation of the manga. Itās not going to be accurate a LOT and thatās just a fact we kind of have to accept. I watch the anime to get the scenes I love animated now. I started out as an anime only (who started shipping them after dvk2) and Iāve re read most of the manga at this point. A lot is different and Iād honestly recommend to anyone who has the time and patience to read the entire manga. It truly is a different experience. Bkdk was more implied in the manga and izu//ocha was even more boring too. The only reason I even like izu//ocha is because of the first two seasons of mha, and then ofc fandom content. Otherwise, Iāve stopped caring for it mostly. Theyāre boring and have been boring for a long time. The only reason they WERENT is because of bones.
Again, anime adaptations are just that, adaptations. I donāt think itās really a bad thing.
[wonder family redraw] cant believe mha ended with bkdk getting married and having 2 kids
why is it so surprising to you when bkdks say āif bkdk became canon Iād become insufferableā like,, hello??? thatās what happens when youāre treated like garbage in a fandom for years because of a ship
The amount of times I was told by dudebros that theyāll will come back to laugh at all of my theories when Izuocha ends up being canon.. and they see this as okay. But God forbid that we celebrate if bkdk ends up happening. They think they have such a privilege only because their ship is hetero. When in reality, thatās THE ONLY THING they have going for them. A hetero ship.
I firmly believe Horikoshi is well aware of the dudebros mindset and thatās why he trolled them so hard in chapter 348 where he seems to have put a full stop to this ship and sent Deku on his way without the confession after setting the moment up. And the dudebros were sure they were gonna win in that chapter.
So yea. If bkdk ends up being canon I will not shut up about it. I will scream about it 24/7 and you wonāt hear the end of it. We deserve it after the horrible treatment we get from dudebros. And they deserve to lose for once.
Itās always dudebros winning.. itās always mangakas doing the same copy paste hetero ship with no development marriage end with kids.. itās time we win for once. And Horikoshi may just be on our side. I mean voice actors ship bkdk, OCHAKOāS JAPANESE VA joked about Kacchan being the true heroine and Ochako being a hero. She doesnāt want Ocha to be reduced to the love interest. Horikoshiās old assistant.. other mangakas.. Katsukiās voice actor who is the closes one to Horikoshi of all, has made comments on bkdk and little jokes.
If Horikoshi had a problem with this, he would have shut it down the way he shut down kiribaku after Katsuki was kidnapped. Iām sure we all know about this but just in case, Iāll explain.
Horikoshi was teased regarding Kirishima reaching out to Katsuki and Katsuki firmly grabbing his hand. The interviewer alluded to the ship and said how the fans were really pleasantly surprised by this. Horikoshi doesnāt engage in this, ignores the question of Kirishima and says: āYea well that was also a sad moment because it was about Deku giving up on Katsuki ever taking his hand.ā So bkdk angst. He didnāt intend this to be a kiribaku moment and he stated it clearly.
Come to think of it.. I donāt remember any further kiribaku development after this. Kiri was paired up with Mina instead. So Horikoshi isnāt afraid to shut down the ships he doesnāt like or intend in a polite way. And he hasnāt done this with bkdk. If anything, he keeps playing into it and it becomes more and more suspicious the further the manga goes.
Horikoshi had one perfect moment to shut romantic bkdk down within the manga. And this moment happened in chapter 348. When Toga asks Izuku if there is someone he wants to be like, because apparently thatās romantic..Izuku says:
āI always wanted to be like ALL MIGHT. I understand that being exactly like someone else can make your heart feel fulfilling but then.. why donāt I feel the same?ā (This is literally translated from the Japanese version)
Now imagine this same sentence.. if Izuku brought up Katsuki here as well. Yep⦠would be the absolute death of bkdk ship once and for all. āI want to be like Kacchan.. but I donāt have those kind of feelings for him.ā
But eventho we KNOW Izuku was seen copying Katsuki, imitating him.. Horikoshi doesnāt let Deku bring him up here. But.. Our attention was brought to Katsuki at the beginning of the chapter with this narration. Horikoshi wanted us to remember Katsuki during this chapter about love, imitation and romance. I donāt think this was without a reason.
Iāve already spoken on the topic of imitation and why exactly I think Izuku left out Katsuki in that sentence and you can check my pinned post for that analysis!
Izuku has no hope in his crush ever liking him back for many reasons - one being that recently Kacchanās always saying heās doing stuff āfor his future wife.ā āGotta stay in shape for my future wife.ā āGotta be the best chef for my future wife.ā That sort of thing.
So itās no surprise to Izuku when heās watching old home videos at his momās place and he hears 4-year-old Kacchan say, āI gotta be a hero for my future wife!ā
Izukuās mom chuckles and says, āI forgot Katsuki-kun used to call you āhis future wife.āā
Izuku drops his chopsticks.
