          Marian SHRIEKS like some possessed thing, her hysterics something he’s never witnessed before and after seeing it now —— he has no desire to ever again. It frankly rattles him, how a woman who was normally so composed even while displeased with him could suddenly shout with such ferocity that he suddenly worries for his own life. Mouth parts around a response, some unintelligable response working its way up his throat that he cannot seem to give shape to.

After several moments, it snaps shut again. He has no reason to justify himself to her, for anything he’s done. It doesn’t concern her anymore. Not after humiliating him at what should have been their wedding. She has no power over him, and he has all the power over her. Yet —— it irritates him how untrue that actually is.

Damn her, and damn his heart.

Guy reaches for her, taking her by the arm and pulling her away and into the hall where their conversation might go unobserved. “What makes you think I had a choice in the matter?” He hisses back. “It isn’t by my command that this happened —— or would you rather speak to the SHERIFF about his decision, and see what comes of your dissent?”

47. — stars (oops, I tripped)

ᴀ ᴅᴇᴍᴀɴᴅᴇ́ ✘ ᴏɴᴇ ᴡᴏʀᴅ ᴘʀᴏᴍᴘᴛs ✘ @ferocioushonesty

          The stars have names that only they know —— Lucia for the brightest one in the sky, shining directly overhead; Katherine for the dimmer one closer to the horizon, vanishing during the winter months. Rosemary, Marie, Jean. They sneak outside after their mother has gone to bed and lay in the grass, picking names for each one. Isabella wants to travel to the stars and bring one back for their mother. Guy is content just to look at them, and for a moment pretend that everything is right in the world.

The stars guide them out of Locksley, through Sherwood forest, to the boat to France. A comforting familiarity in new surroundings, under poorer circumstances. Yet as the first year wanes, Guy finds himself resenting them. The stars are out of reach, no longer a comfort but a cold and distant presence —— judging what he cannot change, silent in their observance. He lifts his hands to the sky and imagines snuffing them out with his fingers.

They take him home too, eventually —— where he finds a husband for his sister (willfully ignorant of the life she will lead in his household), finds status for himself. Eventually he doesn’t acknowledge them at all, only casting the occasional glance up to the sky.

Sometimes, though —— sometimes he does sit at his window, and watches the sky and wonders…

SO HERE’S A SAD THOUGHT!

When Guy was really small and would have nightmares that woke him up, he’d go to his mother, who would sit with him and comb her fingers through his hair and hum until he fell asleep again. It’s one of his fonder childhood memories, albeit deeply buried after the worse things that happened later in life.

Sometimes even as an adult he remembers the song and will hum it when he’s by himself working on something. It makes him a little sad to think about now, considering the circumstances under which she died.
