“Marfil, 26, was homeless in his teens. He had an abusive father. He was addicted to meth. He remembers having a pistol, robbing people and contemplating suicide. His mother contracted cancer while he served time in prison. He held his deceased son in his hands after he was born. These dramatic circumstances amounted to a lifestyle that, to him, was overdue for a change.”

“Twenty-two elements were identified citywide, including cadmium, arsenic, lead, cobalt and chromium. The presence of this particular handful of known detriments fell on the people of Portland like a cattle prod. Many residents were alarmed to find out that moss samples taken from their neighborhoods tested positive for dangerous levels of heavy metals and toxic chemicals. They feared for their families, whose gardens could be contaminated, and especially for their children, some of whom attended schools in contamination hotspots.”

PDX Air - The Portland Air Problem

In 2013, the U.S. Forest Service conducted research to test the air quality of Portland. They found that Portland’s air was host to several toxic chemicals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead, cobalt, and chromium. The UO Multimedia Journalism graduate students gathered interviews, research, and data throughout several months to create awareness. On Wednesday evening, University of Oregon master’s student Stephanie Essin and her team began with a story idea about a dancing clown. By Sunday morning, they’d crafted a thoughtful examination of racial identity and gentrification in northeast Portland.

Highlights from the 2014 UO News Video Lab at the San Francisco Chronicle.

For eight weeks in the summer of 2014, four students joined Assistant Professor Wes Pope to create the News Video Lab within the San Francisco Chronicle newsroom. In addition to video content, we also helped build a new video player and testing tools on the Chronicle site. The project was supported by an Agora Journalism Center Faculty Fellowship grant.

In addition to producing 80 news videos, our team contributed to the Chronicle’s award winning A Changing Mission project.
