STRANGE    is  but  a  step  away  from  a  compliment    in  his  world,  though  he  finds  it  rather  ironic  that    Lex,  of  all  people,  is  the  one  to  say  it.     Leaves  The  Riddler  to  smirk  with  ease.    "Oh,  pray  tell  - what  does  your  analysis  tell  you  about  the  way  I  sit?"     Lifting  his  eye-line,  he  looks  almost  interested  in  the  distinction.    "  ...  Besides  that  you  should  try  the  same,  of  course."

HE  DOES  NOT  TURN    when  she  says  it.     Lets  her  expression  remain  some  mystery  of  the  mind    -  predicts  it,  almost,  just  for  himself,  yet  stills  in  place  regardless.    "Oh,  yes."          There  is  savoring  to  be  found  in  the  syllables,     how  they  roll  in  earned  arrogance  to  fall  at  her  feet. 

Edward  is  a  man  of  dramatics  first  and  foremost.    The  slow  pan  of  arm,  palm  slipped  into  end  of  jacket  beyond  what  she  may  see,  ahead,    hidden  by  himself.     The  rustle  is  gentle,  deliberate:   an  item  slotted  away  now  in  reveal.    They  are  for  show.  Good,  good  show.     Pleasant,  in  her  presence,     though  that  remains  unvoiced.      "But  you're  leaving  with  me,  in  some  way."

Only  then  does  he  turn,  beyond  the  announcement.    The  item  is  as  follows:  thin,  black,  with  a  sheen.     A  tablet,    though  smaller  than  standard.  The  curl  of  his  lips  is  a  dangerous  thing,    though  whether  the  hazard  is  hers  or  his  is  unclear.     Muddled,  as  they  are,  by  how  he  regards  her  with  his  dark  serpentine  eyes.    “Would  you  agree  with  me  that the body is secondary to the mind?”     He  extends  it  forward.    "Funny  thing,  the  internet  is."

HE  HAS  HALF  A  MIND     to  upturn  the  other's  chair  in  some  riotous display  of   disapproval.  ...  But  alas,    it  is  not  so  reasonable  now.     It's  really  his  own  mind  weighing  on  him.     "What  an  impatient  egg  you  are.  Did  mother  hen  not  sit  on  you  enough?"     He  clicks  his  tongue,  flicks  a  finger  to  his  own  chin  in     some  remission  of  the  psyche.     "You've  gone  and  interrupted  my  train  of  thought.  Are  you  happy  with  yourself?"     He  won't  be    if  they    spend  the  next  twenty  minutes  or  so   doing  the  exact  same  thing  ...

Except  luck  has  served  him  this  time  around.  "Ah!  Ah.  What  about  --  'my  dear  captor'  instead  of  just  'captor'?  ...  Yes,  yes.  ...  Okay.  Listen  to  this,  now:

"I  run  and  cavort  though  they've  given  me  no  legs  //  your  enemy,  when  I  wear  him,  cowers,  shrieks  and  begs  //  you  need  me,  you  have  me,  yet  fret  my  sight  no  less  //  captive,  I  am,  let  out  tacked  with  a  return  address "seven  percent  of  your  letters  to  be  //  you  hate  me,  you  leech,  but  you  love  me  //  cruel,  my  dear  captor,  you  never  let  me  be

HE  CAN  TAKE  CARE  OF  IT    just  fine  on  his  own.  Don't  be  fooled  by  how  he  squints  -  it  has  little  to  do  with  the  bruising  or  the  clotting  so  close  to  his  eye.  It's  pure  disgust.  Of  course.  It  must  be.     And  yet  he  is  still,    in  some  way,  besides  the  foot  that  taps  almost  rhythmically  against  the  carpeted  floor.  His  eyes  are  struggling  to  find  elsewhere  to  look  -     somewhere  that  isn't  straight  into  Whitby's  own.     It's  difficult,  at  this  proximity,  to  evade  him.    And  why  should  he,  he  wonders?    The  Riddler  is  not  so    COWARDLY     as  to  flee  something  so  ...  simple.

He  swallows,  slowly,  inaudibly,  leans  somewhat  into  the  delicate  touch  and  chooses  some  quiet  offense.    That  serpentine  gaze  of  his,     if  he  cannot  pull  it  away  then  perhaps  he  might  use  it.   Something  to  how  it  stills,  the  look  of  a  stray  inept  at  receiving  compassion.     Hurt,  almost,  by  it.      Keep  it  forward,  Edward,  as  though  waiting.     Waiting  for  Whitby  to  be  done.  Waiting  to  understand  the  stunt  being  pulled.  Waiting  to  take  command  of  the  cloth    so  insultingly  offered  his  wounded  face.

Who  does  he  think  he  is,  that  man  -  that  bug?     To  force  upon  him  such  obvious  pity.    To  demean  him  with  something  so  foreign.    He  has  always  done  this  alone.  Why  the  bugling  insists  that  he  mustn't  now  can  only  be  conceived,  in  Edward's  mind,  as  some  kind  of  great  disservice    ...    it  has  to  be  one,  otherwise  what  is  he  to  do?

"...  Why  are  you  here?"    rasped  with  almost  an  air  of  impatience,  though  there  is  something  else  to  it.  Something under the sickness of knowing he has once more lost.   "This   -     I  still  have  hands.  A  mirror  is  all  I  need,  not  … "  not  you.    Not  something  this  considerate.    No  one  should  be  this  gentle  with  his  face    without  intending  to  ram  it  straight  back  down     to  the  floor.     "  ...  you're  not  applying  enough  pressure."

IT'S  ALREADY  RATHER  UNFORTUNATE  FOR  THE  RIDDLER    to  feel  the  brush  of  contact  ANYWHERE  near  his  person.  That  morbid  chill  of  compromise    climbing  up  each  individual  vertebrate    with  intent  to  keep  him  on  high  alert.

Perhaps  that  is  part  of  why  he  sees  it.     Such  a  subtle  thing :      A  WINCE,     but  there  is  always  much  too  copious  a  weight  beneath  subtlety.  Perhaps  if  he  were  some  other  man,  he  would  have  let  his  eye  flip  blind  and  turned  it  elsewhere  -    given  some   PRIVACY  to  whatever  probable  distress  may  linger.     But  he  is  not  some  other  man,  so  eyes  narrow  instead.  There  is  some  upturn  to  his  lips  -  something  between  a  pout  and  a  thoughtful  press.      "What's  this  now?"      He  wonders,  playful  tone  supplied  with  a  healthy  serving  of  curiosity.      "Are  you  hurt,  o'  mighty  man?"
