slightly more seriously, the fact that this movie casts a south asian man as Edgar Linton who, upon marrying Cathy, delivers her to her bedroom and says (paraphrasing slightly here), "I painted it the most beautiful color I could think of, the color of your skin." truly fucking troubling. especially considering the casting nightmare that was heathcliff.
this movie has a shocking amount of disdain for poor people, brown people, and women. which is baffling, considering the people claiming it "captured the female gaze," whatever the fuck that means.
it wasn't transgressive, evocative, or titillating. it didn't even successfully achieve being a tragic romance. I've seen people saying that it's a "style over substance" film. but like. there's no substance and the style is bad.
