In truth, he had never really known how to handle children well, vampire or otherwise âboth Virginia and her brother had been no exception on this. Still, seeing the girl so upset by something that should only concern adults, it made Dumasâ heart ache painfully so.
Despite his own wishes, he truly cared about Virginia.
âShh, hey now, Iâm not going anywhere, I promise.â
Wiping her tears away as gently as he could, the Duke gently picked Virginia up to embrace her and let her rest her head against his shoulder âone hand affectionately stroking the girlâs hair. He just hoped this would work at least a little, as he truly didnât know how to act like a proper parent.
She practically clung to Dumas, taking solace in his presence alone. Virginia could only assume he knew little of parenting- after all, a high-ranked vampire such as him likely had no need for the knowledge. Still, she couldnât help but see him as a father figure with how he had cared for her even though he didnât need to.
With a little sniffle, she nuzzled into his shoulder rather affectionately, finding comfort in every touch he could offer. She would praise him for the fatherly behavior if she could get a sentence through her tears.
   âThank you. For everything.â

â No- itâs just that you look humorously similar to someone, I knew. Your appearance is curious, however. If I may be so forward to ask, are you human? â
âHuman? How silly. Are you joking?â Really, sheâd expect better from someone who didnât quite look human themself. Virginia thought anyone would have to know better in this kind of society. Perhaps she expected too much from this kind of humanity.
âOf course not. Do you have some problem seeing color? I donât look very human.â

Truly, this life was a lonely one. With an uncountable amount of years to live, those from her past were gone. Friends, family, trapped in a cycle of death Virginia had escaped (whether she had wished to or not.)  She needed someone. She needed someone, something to hold on to. Someone she knew wouldnât leave her, no matter what happened.

Virginiaâs sob sends a pang of emotion through Carmillaâs chest that she canât quite name. Whatever it is, it brings an ache, so pervasive and bone-deep that she thinks it might affect her very core.
Her head rests on Virginiaâs, then, and she rocks both herself and the girl from side to side as well - itâs a method sheâs only read about in fiction, but even that must have come from somewhere.
â⊠It wasnât real, Virginia. Donât worry.â She strokes her hair with a featherlight touch. âI wonât let anything hurt you.â
She finds solace in the comfort Carmilla can offer her. After all, after being ripped away from her family when she was barely old enough to comprehend the danger it held, Virginia had been left without any female figures she could call family- only a brother and a surrogate father to trust in.Â
To have someone she could daresay compare to a mother was almost overwhelming, something to treasure. She and Carmilla had had their fair share of petty squabbles, as expected with the contrast of who they were as people. Virginia couldnât imagine getting this again.
The vampire marginally stilled, taking deep, hiccuping breaths. She wanted to give thanks, to respond, but all she could do was weep.
"Youâre just watching me."

And she was. Sitting on the top of the banister lining the stairwell, Virginia had silently packed herself into a corner to observe those passing below. Though not-too-pleased to have been discovered, she wasnât surprised. That maid was such a nuisance, too observant for her own good, always ruining her fun.
âOh, am I? I never even noticed.â With that, she slid down the banister and hopped off without a word, smoothing down her skirt as she stood to face Carmilla. âIs that a problem? I was just a little bored, thatâs all.â

Carmilla feels no more for the girl than she does for anyone else. It doesnât take a stretch of the imagination to know how it feels to see oneâs worst fears come to life, though. Itâs a terrible thing, and while Virginia has undoubtedly made her mark in the nightmares of others, sheâs still as deserving of comfort as any other child.
Setting the candle she had brought on the bedside table, Carmilla pulls Virginia into a gentle hug. It is the least she can do; she knows that much, at least.
âThereâs nothing to be sorry for, dear, youâre fine. Are you going to be alright?â
Without thinking, she lets out a weak sob, leaning up a little bit to return the hug she was given (perhaps a little too tight.) Regardless, her face ended up buried in Carmillaâs chest, seeking for all the comfort she could gain from the android. Though her rather stoic, somewhat emotionless nature wasnât helping Virginia much, she didnât expect caring at all, much less physical contact.
âIâll be okay.â Virginiaâs voice was weak, shaky, interrupted by her quiet whines and sniffles- as hard as she tried to suppress them, they wouldnât quite go silent. âIâm just...Itâs okay.â

â â ⟠â  The blue skin, the fangs ; it reminded her of, herself- however the other had EARS. Sheâs staring, eyes squinting at them, from where she sat. She doubted they were human; but her interest was piqued, following close behind them as they walked. // ïœĄïœ„:*:ïŸâ starter for @uralume
Virginia wasnât especially observant compared to anyone else, no, but that wasnât to say she was unobservant either, especially considering the way her ears perked up just a slight as she walked, stride slowing.
âCan I help you?â A laugh- then she turns all the way around, having to crane her neck upwards to see the otherâs face. Familiar.
âItâs over now. Relax.â
@inlapida. SOMA starters.
She sniffled- nightmares were common in any childâs life, but that didnât mean Virginia couldnât be embarrassed about it. The vampire was much more used to night terrors that came out of the sight of others, but it seemed her nighttime panic couldnât escape the maid, as little as she seemed to care about their wellbeing- probably more out of wishing for quiet than anything else.
âIâm sorry.â It was little more than a mumble, but it was something as she stared downwards.

Relax.â âDonât you get it? Theyâre dead.
