write bad fanfic. write mediocre fanfic. write fanfic that a thousand people before you have already written. write niche fanfic. write fanfic that only a few people will read or understand. write fanfic just for you. write fanfic just for a friend. write ocs. write self-inserts. the fact that youâre taking the time and energy to put your ideas into the world is amazing and people who shame you for it need to find better ways to spend their time.

Perfume regretÂ
Got me thinking 'bout when you were mineÂ
Nightclubs had never been your scene.Â
While you weren't strictly averse to them, you didn't thrive in that element as much as some of your friends did. Yet, whenever you decided to make an appearance, it wasn't the stroboscopic lights, the promise of a few drinks with friends, or the energizing music that made the night worth it.Â
It was the hunt.Â
And the preparations began long before you even set foot out of your apartment, from the moment you stood in front of the mirror wearing nothing but a fluffy bathrobe, your face a blank canvas. Getting ready with your favorite, emboldening playlist was usually a luxury but not tonight. Judging by the way you struggled to apply eyeliner over your lids with such shaky hands, tonight, you were in dire need of a crushing amount of confidence.Â
So much so that a glass with one remaining sip of red wine stood next to your makeup bag, waiting for you to take that last bit of liquid courage.Â
Yes, the mere thought of the chase always made your chest swell with excitement. The stolen glances from across the dancefloor until someone gave in and tried to make contact. Loud music left people no choice but to hold conversations in loud whispers that tickled your ear. The desperate attempts to make themselves worthy of your time and the small concessions you made to make them feel like the most special person in that tiny, packed, overpriced club. Flirting was a tango meant for two, and not knowing what kind of partner you'd be dancing with was exhilarating.Â
Not this time, however, you thought as you picked up the glass and poured the remaining wine down your throat. Tonight you were after a much too familiar prey that you'd once been dumb enough to let get away.Â
As soon as you got the digital invitation to the Alchemax Innovation Department New Year's Eve party, you knew it was time to settle the score.Â
A short buzz coming from your phone interrupted your train of thought as the screen lit up with a text from whom you considered to be your work best friend, Liz.Â
Heyy :) u coming?Â
Yep. Be there in 20, is everybody there already?
O'Hara is missing. Idk if he's coming, though.Â
Oh.Â
You felt your stomach drop at the thought of all of this being for nothing. Whatever,. Who cared? You weren't doing this for him. You were doing it for yourself because you wanted to go out and have fun.Â
A weak smile tugged at your lips when you couldn't even convince yourself with that blatant lie. God, you felt like a terrible feminist at the moment. Screw you, Miguel O'Hara.Â
Those had been the last words you said to him before marching out of his apartment and slamming the door after you. Ever since that week during which heâd vanished from work with no explanation, your boyfriend had started to cancel your dates at the last minute or still be out at odd hours, and when he started to simply disappear and not answer your calls or texts several times throughout the day you began to worry.
When he asked if you could talk about something important, you figured you'd be getting an explanation, not dumped.Â
The reason, according to him? He was dealing with some personal issues that he could not tell you about, but he'd single-handedly decided it was in your best interest to just move on with your life, so he'd decided to break things off. His face when he said all of that remained engraved in your brain since that day. Cold. Logical. As devoid of any visceral emotion as a doctor would be when recommending you to give up carbs or red meat.Â
Two years of your life you'd given to him. You were planning to move in together. You were happy. For what felt like the very first time in your life, you were in love.Â
You took a deep breath to keep tears from running down your cheeks and ruining your mascara.Â
Even almost six months later, your heart painfully fluttered at the mention of his name.
Carefully, you dried your eyes with a piece of paper and took another deep, slow breath. Your eyes, beautifully framed by a smoky eyeshadow, slowly traced the reflection of your body in the mirror. A sleek, simple dress with a small slit on the side hugged your figure. You loved the color: a nearly black navy blue that matched your chosen makeup palette.Â
At the sound of your phone, your eyes drifted down to the lit-up screen.Â
Oh, nvm, he just got here.Â
The game was afoot.Â
As much as it hurt your pride to admit it, you were decidedly nervous as you made your way into the dimly lit nightclub, your eyes discreetly scanning the crowd in search of a particular set of brown eyes.Â
Suddenly, a voice made your face in the opposite direction.Â
"(Y/N)! Over here!" Liz called from the bar, waving at you with a huge smile that you returned as you walked towards her after wistfully looking at the busy crowd one last time. It wasn't until you reached the bar that you noticed she was sitting next to a man you didn't recognize.Â
"So, this is she," she nearly yelled right next to the man's ear when you got close enough to be heard above the deafening electronic beats.Â
"Hi, (Y/N), right?" He said, reaching out one hand, "I'm David. Liz has told me a lot about you,"Â
"Dave here just joined the team," Liz explained, giving his arm a gentle squeeze, "I thought it would be nice to make him feel welcomed. I'll leave you to it. I have to go say hi to a few people," She continued as she left the bar, not before giving you a certain look that made you realize you'd walked straight into a trap. While David was decidedly handsome, and you could've considered him to be your type under different circumstances, right then, your mind was somewhere else.Â
"Sure," You replied distractedly, "So why did you choose to work here?"Â
That should be enough to keep him talking for a while about his college education and how all he'd ever wanted to do was work for this company and so on while you focused on the matter at hand.Â
Where the hell was he?Â
Could it be that he'd just popped in to greet a few people and had left before you arrived? Before the countdown?Â
Maybe he was celebrating New Year's with somebody else?Â
"Sorry, one shot of tequila, please," You loudly called as the bartender walked past you.Â
"Make that two, thanks man," David added with a flirtatious smile that you returned out of politeness, mentally praying for Liz to come back soon, knowing damn well that if she'd done this on purpose, there'd be no way out of this conversation.Â
You downed the shot as soon as it was placed in front of you.Â
David asked you something, but his voice reached your ears as if he was underwater. For a minute, you wondered if such a small amount of alcohol could make you feel so dizzy until you realized it was something else. Your eyes had landed on the back of a familiar head. Brown, scruffy hair and a hearty laugh that had your hands shaking again as you placed the glass back on the wooden bar.Â
"God, I'm so sorry. My head's all over the place right now. You were saying?" You said, leaning closer to David.Â
"I asked if Alchemax tends to go easy on the new guys or kick them to the curb at the first mistake."Â
You laughed as if he'd just told an amazing joke, your eyes covertly going from his face to your target right behind him. At the sound of your laugh, his back stiffened, and you could see he was about to turn around. Right before he did, you quickly tore your eyes off him and glued them to David's face.Â
"Oh, don't worry, you'll be just fine. I'll tell you what, I'll look out for you. How's that sound?â You replied, a more relaxed smile plastered on your face. David's eyes lit up. Poor guy. He probably thought that out of nowhere, his luck had shifted.Â
Slowly and without losing the amused grin, you peeked over David's shoulder and found Miguel O'Hara's searing eyes staring right into yours. Unlike you, he wasn't smiling. Instead, he let those same calculating eyes unashamedly scrutinize every inch of your body that your gorgeous dress didn't cover and secretly fantasize about what it did.Â
Another loud laughter leaving your lips made him snap out of a trance-like state and look into your eyes. Hunting on grounds you were no stranger to had its advantages, such as knowing what to do and when. And so you didn't look away. You held his gaze, undaunted, as you took David's unfinished tequila and brought it up to your lips to take a sip, barely sticking out your tongue to slowly lick the last droplets off your lower lip. You mouthed an apology to the man before you as you walked away from the bar, both for the stolen tequila and for what was about to happen.Â
Trying your hardest not to smile or look at him, you made your way through the crowd straight toward Miguel, whose eyes you knew had remained with you since that intense visual exchange back at the bar. You felt them so intensely that you wondered if he could make you burst out in flames just by looking at you. You clenched your jaw as you got close enough for the scent of his enticing cedarwood cologne to fill your nostrils and travel all the way down to your chest, where your heart beat so strongly that it physically hurted.Â
You only had one shot. This was it.Â
It wasn't until you walked right past him that you finally acknowledged him, gifting him a faint smile as you stepped around him and walked toward the restrooms.Â
As soon as the door closed after you, you found the two stalls were empty. After confirming you were alone, a nervous grin took over your features. Biting your lip, you approached the mirror and distractedly began to comb your hair back in place and even retouched your nude lipstick, your eyes set on the reflection of the bathroom door.Â
Almost as if you'd timed it, the second you finished applying your makeup and threw it back into your purse, Miguel stealthily slid inside and shut the door after him.Â
A minute that felt like an eternity to him transcurred while you kept patiently tucking strands of hair behind your ears, concealing a smug grin. Something had to give. More often, sooner than later.Â
"Mind telling me what the fuck was that?"Â
His voice bounced off the walls and reached your ears like a once-favorite song you hadn't heard in months.Â
"What do you mean?" You calmly asked, never interrupting your task.Â
"(Y/N), stop that and look at me." He commanded, his patience wearing thinner by the second.Â
"I am looking at you," You nonchalantly replied, your eyes transfixed on his tense shape in the corner of the mirror as you slowly wiped some smudged lipstick off the edge of your bottom lip.Â
Outside, the one-minute countdown began. Neither of you could care less. Inside that dimly lit, empty nightclub bathroom, time was irrelevant.Â
In less than five steps, Miguel reached your side and, placing his hands on your shoulders, firmly spun you around to face him.Â
"Carajo, ÂżTĂş no entiendes, verdad?" He hissed, his next leaving his mouth after an ominous pause, "Now look at me."
Not happy with the way you were being handled, you shoved him away and shot him a glare with your arms folded before you.Â
"There, I'm looking. What do you want?"Â
"I want you to tell me who's that asshole and why you seem to think he's so damn funny,"Â
"I'm sorry, O'Hara, that's none of your business anymore, is it?" You spat out.
"It was none of my business,' He agreed, wincing at the dry use of his last name, "Until you showed up in here looking like that, laughing like a dumb teen at some guy's dumb jokes, making sure I'm watching after you did some pretty extensive research to make sure I was coming."
Wanting to rebuke that argument, you immediately opened your mouth just for him to interrupt you.Â
"What? You thought I wouldn't find out, bonita?"Â
Miguel started to move towards you without giving you a chance to explain yourself. Still, you weren't sure of what you would've said had you been given the time. Three seconds later, he was standing right before you, trapping you against the cold stone of the sinks.
"Why are you doing this?" He absentmindedly asked, as if he was actually questioning himself or already knew the answer. Before you could react, he suddenly leaned in, burying his face in your neck and taking a deep breath, taking in the scent of your perfume along with something else that you couldnât perceive but seemed to pull him forward so violently that he had to use both his strong arms on either side of you to hold himself back. Still, he kept babbling against the soft skin of your neck, âI didnât want to do itâŚI didnâtâŚI shouldnât haveâŚmi amor, I just wanted to protect you,âÂ
âProtect me from what?â You asked in a breathy whisper, your self-control flaking when you felt him move even closer until your backside was pressed against the sink and your front...
You pressed your lips together to keep a noise that would be much too revealing from leaving your lips.Â
Still, you realized your trials and tribulations werenât over when his hands slowly moved closer to your thighs until his thumbs were tracing faint circles on them.Â
âDo you want me to stop?â He asked in a hoarse voice before burying his nose behind your ear once more. You had to want him to stop. Before you could gather up the courage to tell him off as you should, you leaned forward and feverishly pressed your lips against his in a kiss that was all but sweet. Without breaking the kiss, in a display of both strength and coordination that was new to you, Miguel slid his hands under your thighs and lifted you effortlessly, placing you on top of the sink with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the way he nudged your legs out of the way so he could grind his lower half into yours. This time there was no way in hell you could contain your moans.Â
Pleased with the beautiful sounds he was eliciting from you, Miguelâs hands found their way back up to the thin straps of your dress, which he gently slid off from your shoulders before gripping your chin in his hand and tilting your head to the side so he could devour every inch of skin available, occasionally trapping it between his teeth to make sure itâd leave a mark. Even in your haze, you could notice there was something new to the way he was ravishing you. It was as if he was desperately trying to be gentle, to take things slow, just for something primal to take over and coerce him into taking you for himself.Â
Once again, you stopped thinking when he pressed the hard bulge in his pants against you, the friction over your barely clothed clit throwing all logical thoughts out the window.Â
âWe donât have much time,â You urged him, not even sure if heâd locked the door after himself. However, deep inside, you knew your motives had less to do with the little privacy and more with the way he unhurriedly worshipped your body and peppered kisses all over it, how his hands gently roamed it as if he was trying to commit every detail to memory. It reminded you of what you two had in a way that was still too painful to remember. You wouldnât lose yourself to the memories of your past and miss out on how good he was making you feel right now. Tonight you werenât two people deeply in love with one another trying to fight back the regrets of letting go of what was most precious to you, but two strangers about to fuck in the bathroom of a nightclub.Â
As if to reinforce that thought, he swiftly pushed you further back onto the sink and pushed your legs apart even more, your dress ridding up almost all the way to your waist. You shivered as new skin was exposed to both the cold beneath you and the heat from Miguelâs skin as he fumbled with the fly of his pants. Meanwhile, you kept yourself busy trying to unbutton his shirt with shaky hands and silently thanked he wasnât wearing a jacket in the first place. You needed to get him out of as many clothes as possible in the little time you had, needing to feel more of his skin against yours.Â
Your desire wasnât fulfilled until the shirt slid off his tan, broad shoulders, and you were pressed against his bare chest, his hands resting at the curve of your lower back as his head barely slid over your soaked slit, prying a raspy moan out of his throat that sounds almost painful. Still, even when you slid your hands around his shoulders and intertwined your fingers behind the nape of his head, he didnât move further.Â
âWhat are you waiting for?â You breathlessly asked, arching your back towards him with a huff just for him to move his hips away, escaping your touch, trying to regain some control over himself.Â
âI didnât want to hurt you,â He muttered. Shit. Not right now. Out of the whole night, he had to choose this precise moment? No. He hurt you. He owed you. And now it was his turn to shut up and take it.Â
Taking advantage of his low guard, you hooked your feet behind his back and roughly pulled him towards you, another needy moan escaping your lips as you felt him right at your entrance, whatever remaining reluctance keeping him from sinking into you. It took every ounce of willpower to keep yourself from begging.Â
âAlright,â He finally says, his hands sliding under your thighs to hold you firmly in place, âIf this is what it takes for you to listen to me, bonita, asĂ le vamos a hacer entonces.âÂ
He accentuated his words by slamming into you and immediately picking up a maddeningly fast pace, the loud music outside hopefully drowning out your endless string of broken moans.Â
âI justâŚwanted you to be happy,â He spoke in a strained voice in between thrusts.Â
âShut up,â You snapped at him. You were happy. And it did nothing but further enrage you to see he was unaware of how miserable you were now without him. Or maybe he was aware because he reached that spot that always made your legs uncontrollably quiver and focused all his energy on it as if he was trying to make up for everything.Â
âI love you,â He blurted out as he felt you clenching around his length, his hips stuttering for a second before the sigh that left your lips made him lift your leg further up his torso and slam into you with renewed fire, âGod, (Y/N) I love you so much, I canât do this anymore,âÂ
âShut up,â You sobbed, this time as a plead and not an order. Your heart fluttered as you heard the words youâd waited months to hear, and feeling him roughly stroke your walls at this new angle became too much for you to bear. A string of âshut upsâ and sounds that resembled his name left your lips as your hands fell to his stomach, trying to push him away while paradoxically needing him to be closer, needing to feel more of him just in case this was the last time you felt him stretch you out in a way you were hauntingly certain nobody else would ever come close to.Â
And he wasnât doing any better. He wanted to pull your head against his chest and wrap his arms around you. He wanted to get on his knees and spend the rest of the night apologizing using his words or his tongue, whatever you wanted as long as you went home with him that night. He wanted you to live a happy, normal life. He couldnât give you that anymore. Not after that night. Not after the accident.Â
But those bad thoughts melted away in his brain when he saw your eyes pressed shut, your beautiful, furrowed eyebrows arching over them perfectly as you chased that high that Miguel knew only he could give you. Something that sounded like an actual sentence left your lips so quietly that he had to lean closer to get it.Â
âWhat was that, bonita?âÂ
You pressed your lips together, unwilling to repeat yourself until another perfectly calculated thrust pried the half-coherent words out of your mouth.Â
âNeed youâŚinside. Please, Miguel, please,â Â
Hearing his name being called out like that for the first time in months was all he needed to come undone, his pace faltering as he pressed himself against you, strong arms gripping your waist as he spilled his load inside you with one last labored moan.Â
Nothing but extenuated pants could be heard inside the bathroom for a whole, tense minute before you finally moved, taking a few sheets of paper from the dispenser next to the sinks to clean yourself up.Â
âWhat are you doing?â He asked as you straightened your dress and tried to somehow fix your disheveled hair.Â
âYou wanted to apologize, you did, and I forgive you,â You categorically answered, âBut donât expect me to come running back into your arms as if what you did was nothing,âÂ
Still, you needed him to know there was hope left for the both of you. So you pressed a chaste kiss to his lips and then his cheek, granting yourself one moment of vulnerability as you looked into his eyes with a gentle smile.Â
âI love you too,â You whispered, giving in to the urge to kiss him again. You basked in his shocked look before turning your back to him and going back to the party, where you bumped into Liz less than five minutes later.Â
âThere you are! Where the hell were you? You missed the countdown!âÂ
It wasnât until you looked around at the confetti-filled floor and the large numbers on a screen that you remembered.Â
âI went to the bathroom,â You replied, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear and reaching out to take a glass of champagne from one of the several trays atop the tables, âWhere did your friend run off to?âÂ
âDavid?â Liz asked, a deep red blush spreading over her cheeks, âHe had to go home. I hope you donât mind, but weâre getting dinner next Friday,âÂ
âDonât mind at all,â You replied with a bright smile, eyes already scanning the half-empty club, once again looking for that same face. The one you knew youâd always look for in a crowd for the rest of your life. This time, thanks to the small number of people left, it wasnât hard to come across his eyes. Amused, you raised your glass at him with a soft, genuine laugh. He did his best to look annoyed, but the minute you tilted your head and gave him your best apologetic look, Miguel rolled his eyes and shook his head with a reluctant smile that made you laugh again before taking a sip of that cheap champagne.Â
This was going to be a great year.
Ok so fun fact abt Miguel O'Hara, everyone in Mexico (Idk about the rest of the Latino community) is going crazy over the fact that he kinda looks like this Mexican Telenovela actor named Eduardo YĂĄĂąez and I didn't think he did until I realized I was thinking about how Eduardo YĂĄĂąez currently looks (he's in his fifties I think) but then I went ahead and googled a picture of him in one of his early roles and oh my god
Now I can't stop picturing the animation team going "ok guys so this is going to be the final design of Miguel O'Hara," and when they pull up his picture there are collective giggles from all the Mexican/Latino people in the team with zero context.

also i cried so much writing this now you have to suffer like i did. xo
Right after the tears finally stopped coming, the emotional exhaustion translated into an intense weariness that made you collapse on the sofa. That hour spent out of consciousness was a blissful interlude in the pain that had your chest hurting and leaving you unable to breathe. Youâd once read somewhere that there was something called âphantom limb syndromeâ in which people could feel pain in an amputated hand, arm, or leg. When you woke up, you looked out at the now dark sky and thought of giving Miguel a call to tell him about what an awful day you were having until the memories came back like a harrowing tsunami that had you tearing up when you wondered for how long youâd have to keep reminding yourself that he wasnât there anymore. This time, however, you became angry. And oddly self-assured.
You didnât need him. Youâd given him a choice, and if a sad, pitiful, lonely life was what he wanted, then good riddance. His loss.
You could do this. Jessicaâs pregnancy hadnât stopped her after all. Sure, it would be challenging but there were mothers out there who took care of one or more children and balanced several jobs didnât they? So what if you moonlighted as a vigilante whose life was on the line every day? What if youâd have to spend the rest of your life protecting him or her from the bunch of fairly dangerous enemies youâd made in the past months?
Or maybe you didnât have to.
Your eyes wandered off to your suit which youâd mindlessly thrown on the floor the second youâd arrived home, scrutinizing the details and the care that youâd put into creating it. You wondered what it would look like inside a box, hidden in the back of the closet for years, or until your kid stumbled upon it and asked about mommyâs dutifully hidden past.
An obnoxious beeping sound coming from between the cushions snapped you out of your fantasy as you fished your watch. You hadnât even realized youâd taken it with you and now it was issuing a warning concerning an anomaly with an amazing timing that had decided to pop into your dimension.
Placing a hand on your stomach, you looked out of the window and doubtfully pressed your lips together.
âShit. Please, let it be a Vulture thatâs literally a vulture, please,â you pleaded with whatever deity chose to listen to you as you picked up your suit and rushed to the bathroom, mindlessly throwing the test into the trash can before pulling the mask over your head.
Unfortunately, you didnât arrive at the location to find a confused scavenging bird flapping around. You werenât even sure of what youâd been sent to capture. At the scene, several police cars had formed a barricade outside of an empty warehouse and seemed to be lying in wait, aiming at the door with their guns. Good. That meant you could get in there and set things straight with the unwanted visitor before anybody got hurt.
You stealthily made your way from a nearby ledge to the roof, finding your way in through a broken skylight and landing on top of a pile of metallic crates solid enough to hold your weight but making your entrance noisier than you wouldâve liked.
Whatever you were looking for, it was nowhere to be seen. The warehouse was in such darkness that, if it wasnât for the night-vision lenses Miguel had fitted into your mask, you wouldnât be able to see further than your own nose. They had come in pretty handy, and you couldnât believe youâd been so opposed to getting them.
â(Y/N) itâs just one small modification, give me one reason not to.â
âBecause youâve already done too much!â
âOh come on, it will take me what? Twenty minutes?â
âNo, I donât mean it like that. I mean youâve done too much to my suit, Miguel. First, the emergency parachute, next the spine and nape reinforcements, then you literally said âYou know what? How about we just redo the whole thing with fireproof fabric?â and now another modification?â
âHe added memory foam insoles too, said you wouldnât notice, Iâm with you on this oneâ Lyla chimed in.
You pressed your lips together to fight back a satisfied smile while Miguel glared daggers at the AI assistant, who refused to back down.
âShe still remembers please and thank you, alright?â
âLyla, will you please go check if thereâs a faulty connection or a leaky pipe somewhere? Thank you.â
After throwing a sickly sweet smile his way, she vanished.
âAlright then,â Miguel continued arguing, âIâm sorry for offering to install state-of-the-art, potentially lifesaving enhancements to your suit. What was I thinking, not wanting my girlfriend to die?â
He lifted his hands in defeat and retreated to the other side of the room, minimizing the digital blueprints of the new glasses.
âAnd for the record,â He continued, âI didnât do all the work for your new suit, you designed it, remember? I had no idea of what a âbasque waistlineâ was,â
When he finished talking, he was surprised to hear absolutely nothing coming from your side. Furrowing his eyebrows, he turned to see you still leaning against the metallic table on top of which your suit rested. You were staring at him with a surprised expression that only baffled him further when he noticed the bright blush spreading around your cheeks and down to your neck. Then it dawned on him.
âOh shit, Iâve never called you that before, have I?â
âNo, you havenât,â
Of course, that small window of vulnerability was all he needed.
âPlease let me put the lenses on your suit?â
What he didnât know was that you can see both ways through a window. When he earnestly pleaded with you to let him install the stupid attachment, his true motives were as clear as if youâd heard them straight from his mouth.
Last time I wasnât careful enough. I didnât plan ahead. If something happens to you and I have the slightest notion that I didnât do absolutely everything in my power to keep you safeâŚplease. Do this for me, would you? For my own, selfish peace of mind?
And heâd been right. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw something dart from behind one container to the next one.
âI see you,â You announced, rolling your shoulders as your Spider-Sense began acting up, âListen, youâre probably feeling confused right now and if you come out we couldâŚâ
You couldnât even finish the sentence as something heavy and cold tackled you onto the ground. Instinctively, you rolled over just in time for something sharp the size of a harpoon to stab the ground next to your head strong enough to pierce the concrete. Without wasting one more second, you jumped on top of a container to take a better look at whatever the hell that was just to find that same spot completely empty. Whatever it was, it was fast. Wincing at the sharp pain in your shoulder, you reminded yourself you had to be more careful and avoid taking strong hits like that.
However, you couldnât afford to be distracted right now. And, as if to affirm that thought as quickly as it came, your sense warned you of something coming at you from behind. Before it could take you by surprise again, you swiftly moved out of the way and shot webs twice to try and pin it down so you could at least take a good look at what you were up against.
âWhat in theâŚ?â You gasped as you stared at what youâd captured. Before you, a 20-foot-long pale yellow scorpion furiously trashed about as it tried to free itself from your webs. Not even five seconds after you spotted it, the critter broke free of its restraints and disappeared behind another container. Well, reasoning and trying to bring him in peacefully wasnât going to work with this one. For now, you knew that it was going to try and keep attacking you, so the best you could do for now was to keep an eye on him before he could plunge that hideous stinger through your forehead. Especially since the little shit was remarkably fast. What was that thing Miguel always told you to do?
âNo, remember. Youâve got to think further, think two steps ahead,â
âYou know, Miguel, repeating that a million times isnât going to suddenly give me the ability to see ten seconds into the future,â you muttered, taking the hand he reached out to help you get up. With a wince, you placed a hand on your shoulder and rolled it until it popped.
âItâs not about seeing into the future, (Y/N), itâs about finding unprotected spots and patterns,â
âHow come outside Iâm love, gorgeous or mi chiquita preciosa de ojitos bonitos, but the minute weâre in here Iâm back to being (Y/N),â
âFirst of all, that last one never happened, we agreed on it, I was inâŚa vulnerableâŚâ
âYou were drunk, you can say it, I wonât tell,â
He glared at you in a way you knew meant âwonât you?â. Hopefully, heâd never find out youâd told Peter every last detail of his drunken silliness as soon as you had the chance.
âSecond of all, here youâre just like anybody else. You mean nothing to me and I mean nothing to you because thatâs how the attackers are going to see you, as an obstacle to get out of the way. Now focus. Iâm going to attack you again,â
While knowing beforehand he was going to come at you gave you some advantage, you managed to block the blow he launched at your head. Before he could try again, you noticed his next attempt at an attack was leaving his legs completely exposed. Then, you did what Jess had taught you to do whenever you faced somebody taller than you: go for the knees. You crouched and, with a classic foot sweep, managed to make him lose his balance just enough for you to hook your legs on either side of his and take him down.
You were so tired you couldnât even gloat properly, instead settling for smiling to yourself and releasing a short, triumphant, âha!â with your last breath before crawling over to him and sitting next to his lying body.
âYou know, if Iâm supposed to think two movements ahead,â You say, a beckoning look in your eyes, âI think itâs safe to predict youâre going tell me that thereâs nothing more you can teach me, and then carry me to your quarters to do absolutely unspeakable things to me,â
Honestly, it had been stupid of you to think he would give up that easily. Not even two seconds later, it was your back that was pressed against the floor as his large frame covered you, and his hand held your wrists on top of your head. Then he leaned in, painfully slowly, until he was close enough for you to feel the heat that radiated from his skin, a low chuckle left his throat.
âChula, you donât know half of all the things I can teach you. But this isnât the place for most of them. Letâs get moving.â
Thankfully, you forced your brain to focus on the matter at hand before it could replay the entire memory.
Two steps ahead (Y/N), come on.
That thing always attacked with the stinger first. Then it would probably try to immobilize you with its pincers. Quickly tracing a plan inside your head, you started to roam the dark warehouse looking for the missing critter, your spider-sense as sharp as ever as you looked behind every crate and container only to find nothing. Maybe it had left the building without you noticing? Outside, the police still remained alert and in wait. There was no way it could have left without being seen.
Fine. If you couldnât find him, then he could come and find you. Making your way to the center of the empty space, you remained perfectly still and waited for your sense to tell you where the beast was coming from. The wait was short-lived as you felt a sharp wave of shivers running down your right arm, your entire body shifting to face that side just in time to shoot enough web to completely wrap the entire stinger and leave enough web for you to jump and throw over a beam, leaving the scorpion hanging upside down while aggressively pinching the air around him with its pincers. Unwilling to take any risks, you covered them as well. You had to stand there and catch your breath for a few seconds before looking over to your watch to report youâd successfully captured the anomaly. Only then you had the chance to see that you had several missing calls from Peter.
â(Y/N)?â Peter asked when the call went in almost immediately, âWhere have you been? I tried calling but you didnât answer,â
âYeah, sorry for going AWOL. Iâve beenâŚbusy. I caught something back here. I just reported it,â Behind you, you could hear the scorpion still struggling to free itself, âItâs an ugly one, Maydayâs going to love it.â
â(Y/N), listen, I think you should come back here. You and Miguel should try to talkâŚâ
âP.B., I love you but I really donât want to talk about that right now. Okay? How about you come over here and help me drag this feisty little shit back to the HQ so we can send it home? You wonât believe it; it has to weigh at leastâŚâ
When you turned around to proudly stare at your prisoner, you were met with nothing but a lone stinger, eerily dangling from the ceiling. Your proud smile faded as quickly as it had arrived. Before you could open your eyes to say anything else, you found yourself trapped between two cold surfaces that painfully squeezed all the air out of your lungs as you let out a painful yell. You desperately grabbed each side of the pincer, trying to pry them open to release yourself to no avail. With your brain already starting to run low on oxygen, your strength began to fade. You heard Peter questioningly say your name from the device still attached to your wrist, but he sounded as if youâd been submerged underwater. And his voice sounded as if it was further, and further away. You were falling into a deep and dark lake, air deprived and without enough strength to swim to the surface. So you let yourself sink further, close your eyes and let darkness engulf you as you keep going down.
Youâd wondered once or twice what would come after life. Since there was no way for you to be certain about anything, you decided to believe what sounded the most comforting. You would wake up in a beautiful place, full of light, that smelled like freshly baked cookies all the time because you would be sitting at a kitchen table with all the people that you lost along the way, and it was time for all of you to have cookies with whatever you wanted to drink, maybe you just hung out in silence, or you would discuss all the wisdom that the act of passing away seemed to come withâŚthe point was that in no scenario did heaven smell like antiseptic.
This discrepancy was what made you start slowly blinking as you furrowed your eyebrows, the intense white light surrounding you making your head spin. Eventually, you were able to discern some shadows that slowly morphed into a familiar face.
âHey, welcome back,â Jessica gently greeted you from a chair in the corner of the room. The hospital room. Like theyâd done hours before when you woke up from your nap, a new wave of unpleasant memories came crashing down once more as you tried to sit up with a worried expression.
âIsâŚare we both okay?â It wasnât until you tried to ask that you noticed a certain reluctance at saying the word.
âYes, donât worry,â Jess immediately assured you. Then why did she look so troubled?
âWhy didnât you say anything?â She asked, rolling her chair closer and grabbing your hand gently, âHoney, of all people you know I wouldâve understood,â
âJess, Iâm so scared,â Was all you came up with before shutting your eyes and clamping your lips together to keep the sobs inside, tears already beginning to fall from your cheeks, âThis wasnât supposed to happen, I donât know how Iâm going to handle this, how am I supposed to do this if I canât even take down a lousy scorpion without getting myself killed?â
With a reassuring smile, the woman tried to hug you as much as her pregnancy allowed her, comfortingly running one hand down your hair and rubbing your back with the other.
âSee? Youâre great at this already and your kid isnât even here,â You sobbed against her shoulder, too exhausted to return the embrace.
âWhat makes you think you wonât be?â She asked, pulling away to give you some space and much-needed room to breathe.
And you knew the exact reason. It came to you so fast and with such clarity that it scared you. But maybe she would understand that too. However, right as you opened your mouth to speak, a soft click coming from the door interrupted you right before it opened, leaving you completely exposed to the thorough, scrutinizing look of the man that hours ago you thought youâd never lay eyes on again.
You turned at Jess, hoping sheâd create an excuse for him to leave you alone. You werenât done talking to her. You desperately wanted her to stay. However, sheâd already turned to look at him and left her chair.
âIâll give you a moment,â She said and, after gently caressing your shoulder one last time, left the room.
And then there were two.
For the life of you, you couldnât think of one single thing to say, much less anticipate what his next move would be. Yet, your eyes never left his. Your jaw hurt from how hard you had to clench it to keep yourself from bursting into tears again. Fuck, could the hormones be acting up already? Right when you were starting to wonder if, should neither of you say something, you would just stay there in this staring contest until the end of time, Miguel spoke.
âHow long have you known?â
âA day. Or so.â You blurted out so quickly that he wasnât done speaking when you replied. It wasnât until his eyes left yours and wandered down that you realized youâd been clutching your pale blue gown the entire time. As you slowly let go of it, you realized your hands were shaking.
âAnd you didnât say anything?â He asked again, his voice turning one octave higher right in the middle of the question.
âWell, I found out not so long ago, and immediately after I was called here to help so I thought we had bigger problems and this could wait. But then you said we had been a mistake all along so I imagined I was on my own for this one. And I think that pretty much covers it.â
Silently, he took a seat on the chair next to the hospital bed.
âThereâs something youâre not telling me,â He replied, not looking at you but at an empty spot on the wall, âBack there, when I realized you were gone something didnât make sense. Youâve pushed back much harder for less important things and now you just turned around and left? And with this, it makes even less sense. Even out of spite, you wouldâve told me before leaving.â
You hated how well he knew you, and how right he was. And how what he said didnât make you angry, but instead make you confront the harrowing confession youâd left unfinished before he walked in.
âWhat if you were right?â You asked taking a deep, shaky breath, âI didnât intend for this to happen, you know? It just did. What we had was manageable because at least it was just between us, no third parties affected, if anything went wrong with the timeline and such we could call it off and that was that. But now there was something tangible real coming out of this and I panicked because what if it messed everything up? What if weâd made a mistake? But I just didnât want to think about it until you sort of confirmed it,â
You werenât going to cry. You refused to cry in front of him while having this conversation. You tried to focus on anything else to cope with his seemingly endless silence, anything but his slouching shape next to you. The soft fabric of your sheets, or the faint whirring of the monitor next to you displaying your vitals. Now you focused on your breaths. Long, deep breaths.
âSo,â He finally spoke in a hoarse voice you were sure youâd never heard before, and you were so taken aback by it that you turned to look at him before you could stop yourself to find a strange, oddly endearing sight. He was crying. Well, maybe that was a bit of a stretch but there were definitely tears in his eyes and even if he was better at hiding it, you were sure he was struggling to keep them confined there as much as you were. Suddenly self-aware of the change in his voice, he cleared his throat before continuing.
âSo, weâre having a baby?â
He sounded so expectant, and yet so afraid of the answer. He was absolutely terrified. You could see it in his eyes. This man, who faced life-risking challenges every day and had seen enough for several lifetimes, had never seemed so frightened. The thought, for some reason, made you laugh as you shuddered when you released a breath you didnât know you were holding.
âSeems like it,â came the reply in such a croaky voice that it left you no choice but to laugh a little bit more.
This time he laughed too, although you could barely catch a glimpse of his smile before being engulfed in a hug that made you wish you werenât in such a state so you could pull him as close to you as you really wanted. Instead, you settled for resting your forehead against his shoulder as he pulled away enough to plant several small and warm kisses on your temple.
âIâm sorry,â He whispered, âGod, I swear I didnât mean one single word. Whatever happens next, weâll deal with it as it comes, I donât care, right now all I know is none of this wouldâve been worth it if it hadnât brought me here to you,â Â
âHey, donât get sentimental on me, OâHara,â you jokingly said, pulling away to be able to look into his eyes, âWeâre going to be just fine,â
âI wonât if you keep doing stupid shit like this, (Y/N), ÂżquĂŠ carajos te pasa? âweâre going to be just fineâ Claro, si por tu culpa no me da un infarto primero,â He scolded you, leaving his seat, âYou know youâre benched, right? Youâre staying right here, where I can keep an eye on you and make sure you stay out of trouble,â
âWhat about my dimension? There are plenty of non-interdimensional criminals there desperate to be caught,â You complained.
âWell, Iâm afraid the NYPDâs going to have to figure it out for themselves for the next few months. Might even teach them to appreciate you a little more.â
âAnd if thereâs another anomaly?â
âDios mĂo, mujer,â He impatiently argued back, âIâll go then. Or weâll send somebody else. Youâre staying here. Period.â
âFine,â You huffed, not pleased at all with the order despite knowing youâd been very lucky this time, âBut just for three months,â
âSix,â He stubbornly insisted.
âFive, but Peterâs going to be the godfather and you have to tell him.â
A disgruntled sigh echoes throughout the room.
âFine,â

The scene with the reader fighting the scorpion was so perfectly intense and unsettling with it scuttling around in the dark. But I really enjoyed how it was intercut with the flashbacks. The conversation with Miguel was incredibly vulnerable and touching I loved it.
Sksdjsjdjad you actually reblogged and left a pretty lengthy comment on all three parts I'm this close to getting your username tattooed
Not to be dramatic or anything but I'm two days into finals week and that submarine starting to look cozy tbh

âUnusualâ wasnât a word you wouldâve used to describe your life at all. At least not until about a year ago.
It was unusual to find a spider with such an odd color palette roaming your apartment since you were used to more dull-colored typical critters. It was also unusual that you didnât panic enough to turn the apartment upside down to look for the thing before it bit you, but there was too much work to do, and a million notes from Dr. Connors to go over. It was equally unusual that you hadnât rushed to the hospital the minute you noticed the tiny marks on your thigh.
âI mean, if it was really dangerous, it would have hurt more.â Was your reasoning to ignore it and keep scanning the pages before you. Nobody said pursuing a Ph.D. was without sacrifice.Â
By the time you tried to stand up to make more coffee just to end up collapsing on your kitchen floor, it was much too late.
From then on, âunusualâ was pretty much every dayâs motto.
Having a nightmare that night about being suffocated and unable to escape just to wake up hanging upside down and wrapped in sticky shit was the first clue. Turns out you were actually able to produce said sticky shit at will in the shape of a thin thread, then you discovered the wall-climbing abilities, and before you knew it you were roaming the city at night trying to get comfortable threading between the tall buildings, running across rooftops and challenging yourself to climb this or that building as fast as you could. You felt indestructible, alive. It was wonderful.
Youâd never forget the night of your first save either. For several reasons.
It was an ordinary night, right before returning to your apartment, when a violent shiver abruptly ran up your spine and every cell in your body commanded you to stop. When you did, a scuffle in a nearby alley caught your eye. A young girl was violently shoved against a wall by a man who pressed his hand against her mouth. The same second his hand came dangerously close to the zipper of her jacket, you practically tackled him from above and pinned him against the ground, having no clue of what to do besides throwing punches at his face until you knocked him out. A whimper coming from a dumpster behind made you realize you had an audience.
âShit,â you cursed under your breath, remembering your uncovered face, the only solution at hand is to wrap your scarf around your head to try and hide as much as possible, âOh god this feels too much like cultural appropriation for my taste,â You kept nervously rambling to yourself as you slowly approached the dumpster.
âUmâŚhi,â You greeted, âAre you okay? Did he hurt you?â
Being met with nothing but silence, you were about to leave when a soft voice replied.
âNo. He didnât. Thank you so much.â
âIs thereâŚI donât know; is there somebody you want me to call?â
âI want to call my mom.â She replied, her voice still shaking, âHe took my phone.â
âRight. Phone. Okay.â You quickly made your way back to the unconscious man and pawed his clothes looking for it. He let out a groan in protest.
âYeah it doesnât feel right, does it asshole?â You muttered as you retrieved it from one of his pockets. Then you shoved him onto his stomach to tie his hands and legs behind his back before returning to the girl.
âHere. It still works,â You just held it over the dumpster, seeing nothing but her pale hand as it reached out to take it before you took a few steps back.Â
âNo, wait,â She immediately pleaded, âPlease donât leave me alone with him.â
âLike hell I am. Iâm staying right here.â
So you waited with her until the police arrived. However, the minute you saw the flickering lights and heard the approaching siren, you retreated into the dark part of the alley and climbed onto the nearest building to escape through the rooftops.
It wasnât until you were back in your apartment that you realized youâd been smiling all the way home. Carefully shutting the window behind you, you let yourself fall onto the couch and screamed joyfully, the pillow muffling the sound.
She was okay. A person was okay because you could intervene and do something about it.
However, a new wave of shivers flooded your veins so abruptly that you sat down immediately.
âYeah, I know how that feels,â Came a feminine voice from the unlit kitchen, âBeing able to help, I mean.â
You scrambled to your feet and started walking backward. However, the voice didnât remain hidden for too long. A woman emerged from the shadows, dressed in red with a yellow hairband pushing her near-afro hair back. She greeted you with a soft smile.
âYour reflexes need polishing,â
âMyâŚ?â You repeated, dumbfounded.
âAnd you have to learn how to fight properly. Randomly throwing punches isnât always going to cut it,â
âIâm sorry, who are you? Why are you in my apartment? Were you following me? Do you know aboutâŚ?â
âWhoa, slow down, kid. I know you have questions, and I might be able to help you with that. But youâre going to have to come with me.â
âAlright, IâllâŚlet me just get my car keys,â
âOh, sweetie,â The woman said in between laughs, not malicious but truly amused, âYou have so much to learn,â
You were starting to wonder why she had elongated that âoâ like that until, after pressing a few buttons on the device around her wrist, something that you wouldâve described as a âblack hole on LSDâ erupted in the middle of your living room.
That night you learned that her name was Jessica Drews and that she was completely right about you having so much to learn. With a four-second-o.
Over the following months, you became capable of things you didnât think possible. Walls that took you a minute to climb became easy obstacles that didnât take up more than fifteen seconds of your time, your fighting skills had also improved exponentially under Jessâs tutelage, and of course, going from a life where you could count your friends with less than one hand to being constantly surrounded by amazing (no pun intended) Spider-People who not only understood the changes you were going through but warmly welcomed you into their circle was more than you couldâve asked for.
Well, perhaps some more willingly than others. And by others you meant him.
He, who seemed to be always around, silently watching but never intervening.
He, who despite being allegedly âalways locked up in his labâ always seemed to personally oversee your training since day one.
Whom youâd tried to greet as gleefully as you did the others just to receive, if anything, a vague nod of acknowledgment. In your first three months, you had spoken maybe four times. Well, you had. He only hummed, nodded, or answered in monosyllables. You knew better than to waste your energy with people like that, but for some reason you were unwilling to just accept Miguel OâHara didnât like you and that was that.
âFor some reasonâ being code for âIâm one second away from fainting every time he as much as looks in my direction,â
The night of your first mission you decided you were going to prove your worth, not to your crush but to your team leader.
You werenât a child, for crying out loud. You were aware that no matter how cold, distant, and seemingly indifferent the leader of your new team was, he was an insanely attractive man. Even with the fangsâŚno, especially with the fangs, for some reason. His whole aura that screamed âcompletely-inaccessible-frighteningly-powerful-twice-my-size-manâ had you harboring a huge crush on him within two months of meeting him. So painfully unrequited that it was embarrassing.  Just the fact he could ignore your greetings and surely never think twice of it but you would spend the rest of the day wondering what you couldâve possibly said to make him at least say âhelloâ back made you want to scream into a pillow until your throat burned.
It was right up there with the time heâd muttered âmuch betterâ when he saw you land a kick youâd been practicing and those three seconds kept playing on your head for the rest of the week.
âI told him youâre ready,â Jess said with a proud smile, âHeâs going to call you in sometime throughout the day to let you know where youâll be going and with whom, probably me. How do you feel?â
âExcited, I guess,â You replied, pressing your lips together anxiously, âAlso nervous. I donât want to screw this up.â
âWith me as your mentor? Thatâs unlikely,â Jess replied with a wink, giving you an encouraging pat on your shoulder as she walked away.
âOops, sorry,â She promptly apologized, âWell youâll have to walk that off, Miguel wants to see you STAT.â
However, the day continued normally. You did some assigned tasks here and there, which mostly included helping Spider-Byte to keep everything running smoothly given your background in the tech field. You grabbed lunch, then thought it would be a good idea to train some more before going away.
You were beginning to lose all hope when, as you leaned down to fix some wiring, Lyla popped right beside your head and called your name so loudly you hit your head against the metal and hissed. One year and still you hadnât used to the way she appeared out of nowhere.
âHow am I supposed to walk a head injury off, Lyla?â You joked, rubbing your forehead as you rushed across the halls with the holographical figure floating after you.
âNot in my code,â She replied using her usual excuse.
When you walked into his working space, Miguelâs back was turned to you as he used a digital pen to do some annotations on what looked like blueprints of new equipment. After he didnât react to your presence for a few seconds, you hesitantly walked closer and cleared your throat.
âThat looks nice. Is it a new suit?â You asked, as always, trying to start a conversation.
âI just received an alert about theâŚâ He stopped and sighed as if saying the silly nickname was physically painful to him, ââŚthe Go-Home-Machine. It said there was a small power overload since we sent back that Vulture from the 192-011 Universe.â
âYeah, but Byte and I are already working on that and it should be fully functional by tomorrow morning,â You replied, a bit confused as to what that had to do with your mission.
âGood. Let me know as soon as itâs fixed.â Miguel hastily replied, not even turning to face you until a whole minute passed and he realized you were still standing there. Even then, he just barely turned his head.
âThatâs all, (Y/N). Thank you.â
Thatâs all? What do you mean thatâs all?
âWas there something else you wanted to do?â He asked. Shit. Youâd said that out loud.
âIâŚJessica told me that Iâm ready to go on a mission and that today youâŚâ
âI said I would think about it, and I have.â
He fell silent again. No matter how attractive he was, you were starting to truly get pissed at his stupid theatrical antics.
âAnd?â
âAnd the answerâs no. Youâre not ready yet.â
That felt like all the disappointments in your entire life added up and multiplied by ten. Especially because of how easily he dismissed you despite being aware of how hard youâd worked, how many nights you decided to forgo hours of sleep just to train and polish every movement until it was as close to flawless as you could.
âNot ready yet?â You practically hissed in a voice you almost didnât recognize. Hell, it was enough for him to put down the pen. âNot ready yet? That kid Pavitr has been here for what? A month? And heâs already going off on missions. Alone, I might add!â
Unsurprisingly, he did not answer.
âAnd heâs very, very good, Iâm not saying he isnât. But Iâm just as good. And more experienced, both at being here and at being a Spider-Person. I have completed every training scenario youâve thrown my way, worked my ass off to understand every bit of information regarding interdimensional traveling, and studied the protocol to control anomalies, what is it that you still need me to prove?â
He took a deep breath. So deep that his shoulders rose, flexing the muscles of his back in such a way that if you hadnât been so angry, you wouldâve been too distracted to keep arguing. Even with your blood boiling, you couldnât help but stare and feel your stomach tense at the sight.
âDo you like being part of this team, (Y/N)? Do you like training in our headquarters, having access to all our information, and maintaining contact with the other members of this society?â
âOf course I do,â You replied immediately. Slowly, Miguel turned around to face you completely and walked towards you, descending the two small steps that separated you until he stood towering over you. Even if your knees were about to give in to this unexpected closeness, this wasnât the time to fold. You held his glare defiantly and folded your arms in an attempt to mentally guard yourself against him.
âIâll do that when youâve earned my respect, and I have a policy of reciprocity when it comes to respect, Miguel. Iâve been in line for a year, Iâve listened, learned, and improved so much that if youâre still looking down on me, then itâs your problem, not mine. And no self-righteous, big-headedâŚâ
âThen I suggest you get in line and do as youâre told,â He said in a low voice. But it wasnât threatening, or condescending. It was an odd, flat tone. Tired, perhaps. Almost as ifâŚas if he was reprimanding you against his will.
He was almost unbearably close. You could feel his breath hitting your face. If right then all logic flew out of the window and you stood on your tiptoes you couldâŚ
âJust get out,â He cut you off, once again turning his back to you and walking towards the blueprints again.
âOh no, Iâm not finishedâŚâ You insisted, trying to follow him. However, as soon as you gave one step forward he turned around so violently that you stumbled backward and stared at him with something you hadnât felt towards him up until then: fear.
âYes, you are,â Was his only reply. As dull as the others.
While you could only see his face for a moment before he walked past you and left the room, something about his expression stuck with you even hours later, when you laid on your bed at night and combed through the scene over and over. You thought he would be fuming, maybe even shocked that youâd dared to talk to him like that. The last thing you expected was for him to lookâŚupset. Hurt, even. The mere thought of you being able to hurt Miguel OâHara was as ridiculous as imagining a goldfish fighting back against a shark. Still, you realized that even if you thought he was in the wrong, you felt bad about how things went down back there. You would never understand what being the leader of hundreds of super-powered people was like. Commanding each and directing their particular abilities as best as he could all while maintaining a vigilant eye on endless strings of causes and effects because he knew firsthand the consequences of being careless with them.
Even if he had made a mistake with you and of course you still wanted to address it later, right then all you wanted was to apologize.
âMiguel?â You called, looking around the large room, pondering whether a first-name basis was okay. After everything that had happened, going back to Mr. OâHara sounded terribly stupid. Then your eyes landed on the row of screens where he spent most of his time. An extremely ill-timed wave of curiosity filled your chest as you approached them, taking another look at the seemingly empty room before stepping onto the platform. Getting bolder, you reached out your hand and brushed your fingertips across one of the screens. It immediately came to life with a blue glow, startling you and making you curse under your breath. You were about to look for a button to switch it off when a video started playing automatically from where he had left off. He was in it, holding a young girl. Miguel wasnât just smiling. He was laughing. His laugh was exactly as youâd pictured it. Not particularly loud, but hearty and low. He had the kind of laugh that made you unwittingly smile as well as a newfound sympathy filled your chest as tears filled your eyes when you pictured that being taken from him just like that. How could one have a family, and then one day be completely alone and keep going?
And so, not even an hour later you were roaming the halls of the HQ, your heart beating furiously as you got closer to his quarters, wondering what you could even begin to say.
When the automatic doors slid open, you stepped inside and turned back to look as the doors closed behind you. Well, no turning back now.
With a renewed disposition to make things better between you, your hand reached out for the switch that would turn the screen off until a third voice piqued your interest. It belonged to whoever was holding the camera.
âWould you please stop hoarding her? I deserve some mother-daughter time too! Here, hold this thing and give her to me,â The voice said between laughs. There was something about that voice that made an extremely cold shiver run down your spine.
âFine, youâre right. Bueno pues, mijita, ve con mamĂĄ, Âżquieres ir con mamĂĄ?â
The picture became blurry as the camera switched places with a giggling Gabriella, who could be briefly seen stretching her arms toward the third figure.
âAlright,â Came Miguelâs voice again, âBut when I turn the camera towards you I want both of you to blow Daddy a kiss, can you do that for me?â
Without waiting for an answer, he turned the camera around.
And then you found yourself staring into your own eyes. They werenât quite the same shade as yours, and âyourâ hair was styled differently. And âyouâ had freckles. But otherwise, it was like staring into an interdimensional mirror. Then, your voice spoke.
âOkay sweetie, letâs humor him, shall we? Blow Daddy a kiss. And another one from me because now I have to use both arms to hold you, my big girl!â
Miguel laughed again at the way his daughterâs face lit up at being called a âbig girlâ.
âÂżSaben que las amo a las dos, verdad?â
âAnd Gabriella loves you too. I think youâreâŚnice enough.â
â(Y/N), I donât think you marry somebody for ânice enoughâ, mi amor,â
âI love you too. Against my better judgment.â
âI wasnât supposed to ever see that, was I?â Was the only thing that came to your mind after a lengthy, tense silence.
With one last interrupted laugh, the video ended, and, in a cruel irony, the once again black screen showed your actual reflection.
Except this time, it wasnât the only one. With a loud gasp, you turned around. After seeing him in that video, it became much more evident that the Miguel in it was nothing but a memory of the past. And in a matter of seconds, everything shifted into place like a gloomy puzzle. His expression was unreadable, though he wasnât even looking at you. His eyes were fixed on the empty screen.
âWhat good would it have done?â He replied, almost numbly.
âSo thatâs why youâve alwaysâŚstared?â You kept pushing. Against your better judgment, you thought.
âIt was at first,â Came his only response. Like always, it seemed like you would have to tear the answers off him.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â You asked, turning your head to look for his eyes. Even then, something warm filled your chest. Something that made your heart beat so quickly you felt as if it would stop at any moment, and it spread all over you no matter how much you tried to fend it off. Hope.
Surprisingly, this time he caved in and looked at you. Still, the answer never came. For the first time in all the time youâd known him, Miguel OâHara was at a loss for words. And that said more than anything he couldâve come up with.
âAnd you expect me to believe that, by sheer chance, you happened to catch feelings for somebody who is practically your wifeâs interdimensional twin?â
âDo you think I wanted this?â He spoke rather loudly, his whispers going out of the window as he started to follow you across the room.
âIt sounds so much worse when you say it like that,â Was that a hint of a smile? An attempt at a joke? One year and the only time heâd bothered to be decent to you was when you were talking about how much you looked like her?
With an annoyed look, you moved away from him and started to make your way to the exit.
Miguel OâHara following you to keep you from leaving. Just hours before you wouldâve died of happiness at the mere thought of this scenario. Right now, your brain was a flurry of thoughts and emotions that you didnât know how to handle.
âI was doing an amazing job at keeping my distance. Watching you from afar, seeing you laugh, grow, win everybody over with that awfully big heart of yours, and still I reined myself in,â He continued, âTodayâs the perfect example. You thought I didnât respect you, for fuckâs sake! I respect you so much that every single day I have ignored you and pretended you are nothing but another face in the halls. Damn it, (Y/N), I couldnât even look you in the eye when for months youâve been all Iâve wanted. All because I didnât know if I loved you or what was left of her. And I didnât want you to get involved in shit thatâs mine to figure out.â
âSo you donât think Iâm not ready?â You asked, turning around and even taking some steps towards him.
Hearing him not only withdraw his previous statement of you not being capable of doing things and accepting the problem was his and not yours made you stop in your tracks.
Fine, the sudden (though odd) love declaration had something to do with it too.
âAre you serious? Iâve watched you closely all these months. You learn in days what others do in weeks. You push yourself way more than so many of our members and yet Iâve never, ever seen you become overconfident. Today you never said you knew everything. You said you knew enough.â
This time, it was you who remained silent. There was something else you wanted him to elaborate on, and from the look in his eyes, you realized he knew damn well what it was.
âYou were right. The problem wasnât yours. It was mine all along. I could manage to push you away and keep my feelings at bay. But knowing that you were eventually going to go out there and take so many risks...worst case scenario, you could get hurt or not come back at all. That was too much for me to handle, sâall.â
âWere you afraid of losing meâŚ?â You started to ask just for him to interrupt you.
âYes. Very much.â However, you lifted a hand to stop him. You werenât finished.
âWere you afraid of losing me, or were you afraid of losing her again, Miguel?â
Three seconds later, when no answer came out of his mouth, you were about to turn around once again when he rushed and stood in front of you. For a second, you thought he was going to grab your shoulders to keep you in place. Not wanting to come off as if he was forcing you to stay, his hands just hovered on both sides of your shoulders without touching you.
âListen, she wasnât a picky eater like you are. But I swear that woman never drank enough water and every time I see you thereâs either a bottle in your hand or laying around. And she was so, so messy. It took us at least ten minutes to find the keys every single timeâŚand Spider-Byte said you sort your tools by size and color. Color. (Y/N), I donât think even IâŚâ
âAre you getting somewhere with this?â
âYouâre not her, (Y/N). You have never been, and you never will, I know that. I want you to know that I wouldnât want you to be any other way. I love you.â
After that, he moved out of the way and folded his arms.
âIf you want to go back to your dimension and stay there for a whileâŚor for good, I donât know, I completelyâŚâ
âI love you too, you know?â You cut him off, pressing your lips together after blurting out the three words thatâd been haunting you for the past months. Words that up until now you were sure would never leave your chest. When you turned to look at him, you saw in his eyes what minutes ago had filled yours. Hope.
God, his face was so hauntingly beautiful when his features softened.
âMi amor, Iâd give you all I am and be happy with whatever youâre willing to give me for now,â Â
âWhat do you want from me?â You finally asked him, your voice shaky from the effect you knew his answer would have regardless of what it was.
Miguel moved closer to you almost hesitantly, his eyes never leaving yours. When he was close enough, he reached out with both his hands and slid them up the back of your neck, his thumbs tucked in front of your ears as his warm palms engulfed the back of your head so he could hold you while he brought his face down to press his forehead against yours.
You knew it would take some time for you to get used to hearing him say things like that without wondering if you were the only one in his mind when he did. It would be a while until you felt completely certain that you were made of flesh and bone and not just a ghost in his eyes, but it would happen. You saw his eyes as he drew his face closer to yours and when your lips touched, you knew that it would definitely happen sooner or later. Until then, you thought as you stood on your tiptoes when he almost desperately pressed his lips onto yours, he was very much worth the wait.

also i cried so much writing this now you have to suffer like i did.
A disgruntled sigh echoes throughout the room.
âFine,â

Right, so while I've watched and loved all Spiderman movies, my boyfriend is the TRUE fan.
He's watched the movies, played the videogames, and obviously read a million comics.
So, he's become my main source of Miguel O'Hara fun facts and background information. I've been doing A LOT of questions trying to downplay the fact that I'm head over heels for the man.
Now at this point I'm feeling like a high-school girl asking the guy she likes' best friend one too many questions about him trying not to give away her crush lol
"So...do you know if he like...likes anyone? Like what's his type...out of curiosity?"
Can we get part two of Risk Something please?
Soooo...a few people have asked for part II of Risk Something.
And by "a few people" I mean I woke up, opened the app and for the first time saw the "+99" on my notifications.
So, two things, first of all thank you so much for all the support â¤ď¸ I've been on this platform for YEARS and I was always more a reader than a writer until a few months ago when I took, no pun intended, a leap of faith. And seeing how people not only read but actually enjoy my red-bull and caffeine fueled late night delusions...whew. it's something.
Second of all, of course there's a Part II coming, and as of right now I'm already working on it, so I should be posting it sometime throughout next week.
Until then!
-Me XO
Could you make a fic where Miguel gets the female reader pregnant and they're happy but he's worried about her safety? Maybe have a villain find out? Cause some angst?
Risk Something (You're Losing Me)
Pairing: Miguel O'Hara (Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse) x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Language. Spoilers (Miguel's backstory is mentioned). Angst! Alert!, Unplanned pregnancy!Alert.
Word count: 4.3K
A/N: Since I had already established some background and emotional intimacy, I thought I could write this as a sort-of-sequel to my previous one-shot Host of a Ghost. I was so excited to write this, especially because I don't usually write angst but I like to push my boundaries and leave my confort zone. Hope that it pays off and, of course dear anon, that you like it <3
Part III
Youâd never really believed in long-distance relationships. After being witness to so many unsuccessful ones, youâd cataloged the entire concept into a box labeled âcertain failureâ and tucked it away in the back of your head. And yet, with an inconsistency worthy of your friend Hobie, youâd gone and gotten yourself involved in no less than an interdimensional relationship.
How? Well, that was a good question.
All it took was five simple steps:
Step one: Live a regular life. Go to school, graduate, and try to go for a Ph.D. that gets you working near genetically modified insects for just the right amount of time for you to become careless enough to let one crawl onto your backpack, take it to your apartment, and let it sting you. Throw in some negligence, forfeit going to the hospital, and go on about your afternoon. Warning, some side effects like loss of consciousness or intense headaches can be expected.
Step two: Congratulations! Youâve now become a super-powered person with abilities that range from climbing walls and performing gravity-challenging parkour to creating a sticky web-like element that helped you swing from one building to another. Toy around with your new talents, and grow comfortable with them before realizing that you can actually use them to be the much-needed help your city needs.
Step three: Turns out youâre not the only one with this kind of ability out there. Thereâs a whole Spider-Society full of similarly enhanced people who try and do their best to keep their own dimensions safe, and youâve not only caught their eye but have actually been invited to join them. Let your new guide Jess Drews show you around, and explain all the benefits that come from joining a team such as theirs. If you decline, you can go back home and thatâll be all.
If youâre interested, itâll be necessary to convince the leader but they could use some extra help so it shouldnât be particularly hard. It sounds like an amazing chance. Information you wouldnât have access to otherwise, mind-blowing facilities where you can polish your newly acquired abilities, possible new friends that actually know what youâre going throughâŚSay youâll think about it. Right as youâre about to leave, the most fucking gorgeous man youâve ever seen in your entire life walks past without paying either of you any mind, busy while speaking to another Spider-Person. You ask who that is, turns out heâs the aforementioned leader, âwill I ever have to work with him?â, you ask. âProbably, eventuallyâ Replies Jess. Ask when you can start.
Step four: Do your best to earn your place in this elite group. Successfully improve your fighting skills, read everything available on interdimensional traveling and the multiverse. Understand it almost instantly because thatâs how smart you are, kudos to you. Realize that for some reason, despite never actually interacting with you, Spider-Society leader Miguel OâHara tends to stare. A lot. Is it because youâre progressing as fast as Jessica says or because sheâs a complete liar and youâre actually doing it all wrong? No idea. All you know is that even during mundane scenarios like laughing in the hall with all the newest additions to the team or in line at the cafeteria, you feel a certain tingle in the back of your head that makes you turn around. Of course, the moment your eyes meet, he turns around and leaves. An odd one, yes. But youâve also heard things. Rumors, here and there about his life before creating the Society. Whispers about a lost family and some video archives being the only evidence that they even existed in the first place. And, of course, the fault he had in the destruction of their dimension. You sympathize with him, despite his apathetic attitude towards you. Youâve seen him interact with those heâs closer to, and you know thereâs more to him than he lets on. Youâd be elated if he ever let you take just one look at the smidge of his old self that sometimes peeked out from behind the iron curtain. Well, not really. One look wouldnât be enough. If anything, it would only cement your feelings for the man.
Step five: Curiosity killed the cat. We all know that. You know that. And yet, you decided to go snooping around Miguel OâHaraâs computer and personal files until you accidentally switch his computer on for long enough to let the videos heâs always watching start playing. HeâŚhis daughterâŚan entire lost life gone before his eyes. Then, before you could do the right thing and turn the computer off, an eerily familiar voice called at him from behind the camera. So, of course, you had to keep watching. Long story short? All those oddly constant stares, that coldness towards you, unwillingness to look you in the eye, was because of two reasons: first, you were a nearly identical interdimensional variant of the wife heâd lost in the dimension he unwittingly erased from existence. Two, as heâd confessed after realizing youâd found out about the truth, Miguel had come to terms with the fact that he was in love with you, not as a replacement for somebody from his past but as a new presence in his life that heâd been struggling to watch from afar, unwilling to let all his repressed feelings spill out like water from a broken dam. Until that night, of course.
Now, eight months later, youâd come to realize there was actually a sixth step youâd never actually considered until now that you were in thisâŚsituationship.
Step six: Uncomfortably avoid every and all circumstances in which interdimensional disparities and canon consistency regarding your relationship could come up. Donât say anything like âWell, itâs been nice but Iâve got to go back to my own dimensionâ because that would remind him that his dimension was not yours too. That you were after all still a stranger in a strange land. Which of course also meant never inviting him to stay in your dimension.
Deep inside, you knew that all those details would eventually cause problems, especially regarding the inner conflict Miguel was always dealing with knowing what he was doingâŚwhat you were both doing, went against his strongest principle. But by God he was happy. Happier than heâd thought he could ever feel again. More than he deserved. So he just ignored those intrusive thoughts and focused on whatever task was at hand. And you were too. Even after just eight months, life without him already seemed unimaginable. He was your first thought in the morning and your last before you went to sleep, and more than once his presence beside you had been not just a figment of your imagination, but a part of your reality as you felt his strong arms wrap around your waist and pull you closer whenever you strayed too far from him in bed as he groggily whispered, âÂżY a dĂłnde crees que vas, preciosa?â, Or when he buried his nose in the crook of your neck, lining it up with soft kisses that sometimes ended up in both of you being late for your assigned tasks. With so much on the line, you were more than happy to avoid those spiky subjects. It seemed like such a small price to pay with all you were getting in return. Â
You werenât sure of where all this was going, but none of that mattered. Right now, you were together. Inside the Spider-Society you were a great team and each one was a valuable asset. Outside, every second spent in your arms was enough to make him forget Spider-Man. To you, he was Miguel and nothing more. And that was all you needed.
Life was good. You were happy with the way things were. Until, as it usually happens, a necessary disruption came quite literally crashing into your life in the shape of a fifteen-year-old that carelessly swung around a corner and crashed into you after youâd been chasing him like the rest of the Spider-People after receiving Miguelâs message.
âMiles?â You asked, recalling his name, which youâd actually been hearing for quite some time since the circumstances of his existence started being a problem for your boyfriend. The boy didnât answer. He just looked at you, his eyes filled with confusion and fear until you hesitantly took a step aside to leave the escape route open for him. If anything he looked even more baffled, but when the noise of his pursuers reached your ears he rushed down the hall and you lost him after he took a sharp turn.
Before you could be spotted, you ran in the opposite direction and hid around a corner as you tried to call Miguel on your watch. Of course, it was in vain. Well, Plan B. Fortunately, this time you did get a reply.
â(Y/N)?â
âPeter! Yes, itâs me! Where are you?â
âWhere do you think? Iâm going after him like everybody else. I need to get to him beforeâŚsweetie, please just get back in there, Daddyâs on the phone right nowâŚI need to get to him before- â
âHeâs already left the headquarters,â You informed him.
âWait, you saw him?â
âAbout a minute ago. He was on his way to the North exit.â
â(Y/N), are you sure you should be a part of this chase right now?â
âWhy not? Jessica is there, isnât she?â You replied, smiling to yourself. Good old Peter B., looking out for you like some sort of self-appointed brother figure.
âWell yeah, but sheâs not running, kid. Although I donât think she should be on one of those death machines either, I donât what sheâsâŚâ
While he kept on rambling for a bit, you looked around and wondered if youâd ever seen the building this empty.
Empty.
Your eyes slowly ran along the pearly white walls until they landed on the hallway that led to the room where the Go Home Machine was kept. Practically unchecked, if Spider-Byte had joined the pursuit.
âP.B., Iâll talk to you later,â You absent-mindedly replied, hanging up on him without waiting for an answer as you dashed down the hallway.
You kept thinking about that poor kidâs eyes. After having all that information unloaded onto him, instead being given enough time to somewhat process everything he now had to escape from the very people he was supposed to feel safe amongst. When he sat on the floor right in front of you right after the crash, he was sure you would immediately hand him over. Maybe a few months ago you wouldâve done it without hesitation but nowâŚthings had changed.
There it was. The Go-Home Machine. You thought you saw a purple blast inside that let you know Byte was still there. However, if your theory was correct, Miles would have to go through that hall and therefore, you. A few minutes later, a sudden voice booming from your watch startled you.
â(Y/N)!â
âMiguel? Where are you? Iâve been trying toâŚâ
â(Y/N), listen to me! Miles lured everybody out on purpose, heâs trying to get to the machine. I can see your location back at the headquarters and he should be coming your way in less than a minute!â
âAlright. Iâll handle it.â You replied, ending the call before he could ask you to elaborate on that.
Sure enough, light footsteps came in your direction shortly after. Right as Miles entered your field of view, an alert issued by your watch made your stomach drop and a dreadful feeling fill your chest. However, youâd made up your mind. There was no going back now.
Mile spotted you at the end of the hall and stopped in his tracks. His eyes were determined, not as afraid as a few moments earlier. If he was there that meant heâd somehow gotten past Miguel. You fought back a smile when you wondered how pissed heâd be about it. Having his ass kicked by a teenager was something that, maybe under different circumstances, you could tease him about.
âHeâs a delight, isnât he?â You finally spoke, trying to somewhat lighten the mood while taking a step toward the kid. However, he got in a defensive stance, furrowing his eyebrows in distrust.
âItâs okay, Iâm not going to hurt you, I just want to talk.â You assured, showing him both your hands, âMiles, listen very carefully. This is exactly what Miguel was talking about a while ago. At this very moment. Right now, Iâm supposed to stop you from getting to that machine and handing you over,â
Of course, he took another step back.
âMiles Iâm not going to do that,â You assured him.
âWhy not?â He immediately asked, constantly looking behind him, wondering if this was just you trying to stall him like, unbeknownst to you, he thought Peter had tried to do a while ago.
âBecause Iâm sure thereâs a better way to go about all this. I love him so much, I do, but heâs so afraid that I donât think heâs willing to see other possibilities and by the time he does, it might be too late for you. Now go before anybody else gets here.â
You didnât have to tell him twice. Miles darted past you as soon as you finished talking, taking a second to look back before reaching the dimly lit room where his ticket home was. His eyes scanned your face and darted down for one second before he looked up at you, a new worry in his eyes that had you wondering whether his spider-sense was strong enough to perceive something youâd just found out yourself. Â
âAre you going to be okay?â Miles asked, his eyes looking down for a moment once again. Did he know? Did he mean âyouâ as in just you or as inâŚ?
âYes, donât worry. Now get out of here.â You insisted. With one last hasty âthanksâ, he ran into the room as your left in the opposite direction. You werenât worried about Spider-Byte. She was a good kid, and sheâd do the right thing.
The right thing. What did that even mean anymore?
Youâd deal with the moral implications later. For now, as you found yourself on the other side of the headquarters, your mind was set on finding Miguel. Maybe you could try and talk some sense into him, make him reconsider whether this wasâŚ
âWhat the hell was that?â
By now youâd gotten used to Miguelâs habit of sneaking up on you. Usually, hearing his voice coming out of nowhere brought a smile to your face. This time, you closed your eyes and winced as you felt his presence behind you.
âDonât even try lying. I know that voice you used in the call. The one for when youâre about to ignore whatever order Iâm about to give you, so I checked the cameras.â
âMiguel, IâŚâ You began to explain yourself just to be harshly cut off.
â(Y/N), what were you thinking? Do you realize what you just did? Do you have the slightest idea of the consequencesâŚ?â
âI do realize that you just asked a fifteen-year-old child to stand by and let his father get killed right before calling his existence a mistake, Miguel. What were you thinking?â
âI was thinking of our safety, and that includes Milesâ. Youâre right, heâs a kid and that means heâs selfish and immature enough to endanger everything weâve all been risking our lives to protect for years.â
âMiguel, listen to me,â You insisted, âYouâre scared. I know. I am, too, but have you ever considered that maybe thereâs another solution? Do we even know for sure that allowing the kid to go and try to save his father is going to cause any real damage?â
âWhat if it does? Are you just going to tell me âSorry, Miguel, you were rightâ and thatâs all? (Y/N), Dios mĂo, piensa. Gwen said the same thing but we couldnât trust her with being objective because heâs her friend,â
âWait, what do you mean couldnât?â You asked. Miguel clenched his jaw and turned away, unable or unwilling to look at you.
âMiguel, please tell me you didnât send her back. Not with how she left things back there,â
His absolute silence told you everything. Shaken, you took a step back.
âWhat is wrong with you?â You hissed the disappointed look in your eyes hurting like a sharp dagger to his chest.
â(Y/N), mi amor, Iâm just trying toâŚâ
âYouâre such a hypocrite,â You angrily spat out, âYou go around preaching about how important sticking to your stupid canon is and the delicate balance of the multiverse when you know damn well that what weâre doing goes against every single one of those things,â
âNo, no, thatâs very different,â Miguel disputed,
âHow is it different?â You argued back, boldly moving closer to him wishing you were taller so you could face him, âIâm from another dimension, there is no way that we were supposed to meet from the beginning. You had your world, this world, and when you tried to live another life in a different one, an entire dimension was destroyed. I had my world, and for all I know maybe there was somebody there that I was supposed to meet but thankfully I ended up here first so I could meet you. But you know what? My universe is fine, yours is too and I swear I had never been happier in my entire life.â
âYouâre right.â He muttered in deep thought.
âYes, I am. And maybeâŚâ You started to say, a relieved smile tugging at the edges of your mouth until he looked up and the expression in his eyes made your throat dry up.
âWeâve been messing with fire all this time. There is probably somebody you can be with without endangering your entire dimension. And thisâŚthis is the hand I was dealt and I should just accept it and live with it. Youâre right. Maybe this was all a mistake from the beginning.â
âNo. No, come on, you donât mean that.â You shook your head in denial, lifting both your hands to cup his face in your hands, to bring him close like he had done the night you finally could let all the love you felt for him escape its confinement in your chest.
Miguel grabbed your hands before you could touch him and moved away from you before releasing them as he finally built up the courage to look you in the eye.
âAre you serious?â You asked, your voice quivering with anger as you felt tears begin to dwell in your eyes, âSo thatâs it? Youâd rather sacrifice us than find a different way to solve this?â
âWell, what did you think was going to happen, (Y/N)? That this would go on forever and weâd keep pretending everything is fine and that you donât have to wear a fucking machine on your wrist every time you come to see me because even the cells in your body know you were never supposed to be here?â Â
âOh, right, so you expect me to believe that you always knew this was going to be temporary? Then what was this? Something to take the edge off after a rough day until you decided it was time to stop fooling around and just be done with it?â
Deep inside, you knew what his response was going to be, but every inch of your heart silently pleaded for you to be wrong. To pull you into his arms and apologize for trying to send you away and promise that youâd get through this because you loved each other and that was all that mattered.
âI donât know why you thought it was anything else,â
For a minute, you wondered if this was all actually happening. Maybe this was all a nightmare fueled by all the training simulations youâd gone over lately, and youâd wake up crying just to find Miguel asleep next to you, his wide back slowly rising and sinking with every calm breath he took. Your crying would wake him up and heâd furrow his eyebrows and ask what had happened.
âI had a nightmare, thatâs all,â Youâd say, wiping your tears off and trying to downplay it. But he knew better. He always knew better. He would pull you close and bury your head in his chest, placing a kiss on top of your head while warning you that he was the only one allowed to have nightmares because otherwise heâd have to start comforting you too and neither would get a full night of rest. And you would laugh softly as you drifted off, lulled by the warmth of his chest and his smell of sage lotion and cheap fabric softener.
But no. You were very much awake, and instead of comforting you with promises and reassurances, he was walking away from you after delivering the final blow to your heart.
Since he had his back turned to you, you felt free to let the repressed tears freely fall down your face as you helplessly watch him go until he disappeared around a corner. All of a sudden, you felt as if the walls of the headquarters had begun to close around you to asphyxiate you, and the sound of the returning Spider-People made you realize you didnât want to be there for one more second.
Thanks to your watch, you were back âhomeâ in a few seconds.
âHomeâ. Your empty apartment where youâd lived alone for years. Where heâd never set foot, and at least in that way it was free of his memory. Or so you thought until you looked over your shoulder at the ajar bathroom door. Inside, atop the porcelain sink, still rested the positive pregnancy test youâd left there before having to rush over to the headquarters to help with the latest anomaly.
That memory felt so distant now. As if it had happened years ago, in a different life. You suppose in a way, it did belong to another life. A life that was over now.
Numbly, you made your way toward the ragged sofa, collapsing on top of it as soon as you were close enough. It was only then that the full weight of the last day and a half sank in and, as you gently wrapped your arms around your stomach, you let the tears fall until your throat burned, the dusty cushions muffling your broken sobs.
âIâm sorry, I donât think I heard correctly, you did what?â
The seriousness of the situation was enough for Peter to fasten a small strap in Maydayâs baby carrier to make sure she wonât go anywhere for a few minutes as he waited for his friendâs platform to reach ground level. He couldnât be chasing his toddler around and ripping Miguel a new one at the same time.
âI did what I had to do. Itâs for her own good,â
âRight, because youâre such an arrogantâŚâ He paused to carefully place his hands over Maydayâs tiny ears, ââŚsuch an arrogant dick that you think you know whatâs best for everyone, including a fully grown, intelligent, woman like (Y/N)â
âShit, Parker, do you think it was easy for me?â Miguel uttered, pinching the bridge of his nose before resting his face against the palm of his hand, âWhat I said about this being the hand I was dealtâŚI donât know how Iâm supposed to deal with that. Hell, I donât even know how Iâm going to keep myself from showing up at her dimension to try and get her back here the first chance I get.â
âAnd why would you have to keep yourself from doing that?â Peter asked patiently. It sounded like a better alternative to âMiguel, I love you man but I swear youâve got the emotional availability of a tree stump. Beats me how (Y/N) was able to get you to admit your feelings without prying your chest open with a jigsaw to see your pounding heart for herself.â
âShe was right. We were never supposed to meet in the first place. Not like this. Itâs notâŚâ
âMiguel, I swear if I hear the word âcanonâ even once in this conversation Iâm going to drive my head through a wall,â
âJust because you donât take anything seriously doesnât mean everybodyâs the same,â Miguel hissed back.
âThatâs where youâre wrong. Last time I didnât take something seriously, I ended up just like you will unless you get your priorities sorted out. Alone, and regretting not focusing on what was important,â
âThis is important,â Miguel stubbornly argued.
âMore important than what you had? Look at yourself. Just forty-eight hours ago you were as happy with (Y/N) as youâd been for the past eight months. And as happy as Iâve been with Mayday and my wife who, by the way, wouldnât even be with me if it wasnât for that kid you just called a mistake. And do you see my dimension going up in flames? Or yours? Or hers?â
Unable to find an argument against that, Miguel remained silent, his eyes fixed on an empty spot on the wall in front of him.
âListen, I know youâre afraid. You donât want her to get hurt, but if you love her as much as you claim to, then youâre taking the choice of a coward right now. And you canât afford to be one, especially now.â
âEspecially now?â Miguel inquired, turning to look at his friend who, much to his surprise, pressed his lips together as if heâd made a mistake and instead focused on getting Maydayâs hair out of her face.
âMy point is; I know you well enough to know you worship that woman. And she thinks youâre pretty decent too. And I can tell you from experience that youâre going to regret it for the rest of your life if you let this come between you.â
Not knowing what else to add, Peter gently patted Miguelâs shoulder before leaving the room, hoping heâd given him enough to think about. Hopefully, enough to make him change his mind.
Meanwhile, Miguel hadnât moved since Peter left the room, mulling his words over.
Two, particularly, had stuck with him for some reason.
Especially now.
