It was ironic how Grace’s text came in the middle of his project for her wedding. It didn’t take very long for him to clean himself up and make the trek to her job. He always felt out of place in fancy places like her job. Women in shoes that cost more than his rent and men who could weight lift their own watches. Walking past reception, he gave a semi-familiar wave to a secretary that probably only remembered him due to the fact that he was the only man she knew who wore plaid so frequently. Knocking on Grace’s door, Chance slowly pushed the door open but quickly had his attention snatched away from the crying toddler. “Woah, woah now darlin’, no need for that!” Chance glanced over to Grace as he asked, “What’s the lil’ lady’s name?” With a loud groan to emphasize how old he felt, the man sat himself on the floor in front of the child before pulling out a bag of fruit snacks. “ ‘Reckon I’ll never hear it if y’keep cryin’. Then who am I gon’ share these with, hm?” He questioned to the toddler, opening the small bag and taking out a fluorescent yellow. His first thought was to eat it, but instead he realized it might help to attempt to make the small child laugh. “You’re gon make me share the whole bag with Grace? I don’t even know if she likes ‘em,” and quickly, with a flick of the wrist the gummy flew toward Grace’s forehead as Chance attempted to stifle a laugh.

“They always give back what they receive…”She teased, “Hae you given them a hard time neighbor?” Suzy asked with a smirk on her lips and pointing at him like when adults scolded little kids. It was quite odd to be talking so nicely to the same man who put his music so loud that she couldn’t concentrate and that man from whom she ate the pizza from even if it wasn’t hers as payback. Talking about dancing was talking about dreams and a life without troubles, her eyes were bright and a genuin smile appeared on her face. “Yes, I dance ballet” She looked at the space around them “You want me to dance her?” She asked while chuckling.
“Me? C’mon now, we both know anyone who has me as a neighbor is happier’n a pig in the mud,” Chance nodded, as if it were a well-known fact. Funny how some things work out. Never in a million years would he have imagined that he’d be talking to his neighbor in such a fashion. The possibility that when the next time an interesting sporting event caused him to be rather loud they may revert back to their old cycle was likely, but in this moment he almost appreciated someone who talked to him like he wasn’t a train-wreck. “Yeah, I sure do. Unless my stunnin’ vocals got you a lil’ bit nervous...” Obviously, with the grin tugging at the corner of Chance’s lips, he was kidding - but there was a budding curiosity about her supposed skill.

Grace: I'm at work. I can't leave my office.
Grace: YES! PLEEEEEASE!!
Chance: ....you gon' buy me a pulled pork sandwich?
Rose smiled. “What a wonderful day, isn’t it?” Rose said while looking up at the sky, it was so blue and with a few funny shaped clouds made everything look like a painting. “I hope we have more days like this one”
The weather and it’s sunshine, how fluffy white clouds glided through the air, and even how the scent of blooming flowers became more prominent in this particular season mattered none to Chance. His world was dull, with the occasional splash of color if he heard a particularly humorous joke or had a homemade glass of sweet tea. And yet, his momma didn’t raise no fool. As the older woman spoke to him, he respectfully attempted his best smile as he nodded in agreement. “ ‘Reckon it could be a he-- whole lot worse. You gon’, uh, garden or somethin’ today, ma’am?”

Grace: I offered myself to babysit my colleague's daughter. She is two. She hasn't stopped crying since he left. What should I do?
Chance: terrible twos
Chance: Y'gotta get her mind off it. Make her laugh, take her to the park, somethin. Probably misses her folks.
Chance: Need help?

It had definitely been a while since Delaney had been back. Work had always seemed to be her life, but now that she was in her true home, she felt as if she could finally breathe. and tonight was all about having fun, which she was excited for. She made her way down a small hill where she saw the bonfire set up. A small smile was on her face, ready to just let loose. She made her way to a table filled with refreshments, where she found some jello shots. She took too, immediately making them disappear. “Well, I’m having a good time already,” The girl said aloud with a slight laugh.
Chance forgot how happy people always were in Santa Monica. They beamed, consistently, as if there were nothing to tear them down in the world. Child-like glee. The woman beside him was no different, but between his life in Santa Monica a decade ago and his current return, he was anything but the same. And yet, he was here, so Chance figured he should give this night his best shot. “ Ain’t seen one o’ those in some time. ‘Reckon third time’s a charm -- throw one more back ‘n y’might have the best night of your life.” The smile on Chance’s face was forced, but it was better than none.
Despite the music already playing, Sofia heard a someone walking towards her as she set up the bonfire. She looked up when the person stopped. “The food and drinks are over there.”, she said as she pointed at the tables filled with boxes of pizza and bottles of alcohol. “If you would like something other than pizza and alcohol, there’s pasta inside the house and iced tea as well.”
Chance chuckled at the sight before him. Never in his days had he seen a girl so tiny making a bonfire. “ ‘Ey now, one thing at a time,” the man leaned down to juggle a few pieces in his hands before setting them up in the pit. “ ‘Reckon these logs are ‘bout as big as you. Y’got any paper out here?”
“A bonfire was what everyone needs, to relax and have fun while eating, drinking and singing don’t you think?” He smiled to the person next to him as he spoke, “Oh and swimming, okay I’m excited if you couldn’t tell before” He said before showing his guitar case in his hand “I even brought my guitar in case people want to sing or something…”
Grace had already taken a substantial toll on Chance’s patience and ability to converse politely. And so, the last place he wanted to be was at this bonfire. Heaving a sigh, Chance shook his head at all of those ideas. “Just need t’know if y’seen any Jack Daniels ‘round here?”

“Excuse me?” Grace looked at him with raised eyebrows, surprised that he has just said something like that. “What kind of question is that? You are not supposed to ask me something like that. I can imagine that my mom could say something like that but you?” She wasn’t upset. It takes much more effort to upset her but she definitely wasn’t okay after this question. “Of course that I’m happy with this guy. We have been together long enough to know that I will be happy. Everyone has their flaws but that’s how it is. Nobody is perfect if that’s where you are heading.” She slowed down and looked at him. “And yes, my friends like him. Even if they didn’t like him, I love him and that’s what matters. But luckily, they do. I think that you are exactly the person who knows what’s like to love somebody.” She said gently because his wife and his kid has always been and always will be a touchy topic to talk about. "That’s not fair, by the way. Asking those kind of question. What are you implying to? Where are you heading?”
Instantaneous. Words were spewing from his mouth without truly considering the effect of his statements. There was no plan, no path, no clear destination for his voiced thoughts. “Your ma asks you ‘cause she cares, Grace. She asks ‘cause maybe she knows she don’t want you to make a mistake that you’ll be regrettin’ the second you say I do. Y’gon’ blame me for givin’ a damn?” he spat. Chance’s mouth opened, ready to continue this conversation until her implication fell between them. Brows furrowed, his stomach dropped. Had the temperature risen? The air around him felt thin, and his focus was set on finding a way to get oxygen to his lungs while she spoke for the next few moments. “You...” Fingers tangled into his hair as his eyes shut hard, searching for his words carefully in this moment before he found Grace’s gaze. “You don’t bring that up. You don’t talk to me about her, y’hear me?” Chance handed over the bottle of water he desperately wanted to toss to the side. “Take your water, I can make it home m’goddamn self.”

marisol scrunched her nose up at him and watched as he struggled to remove himself from the ground, sand falling off his back as he rose. a small laugh left the lips of her pale lips as she scoffed at his judgement towards her. the last person she had expected to be judging her choices was the man she found in the sand who reeked of booze. “to be fair, i didn’t think i was gonna have company” she retorted, putting the cigarette out on the ground beside him and shoving it back in her purse, respecting his wishes. “are you from around here? do i know you?”
This young woman’s responses to his own actions provoked a series of grumbles, finished off with an eye roll in tune with her quiet laughter. Although, his own mood lightened as she put the cigarette out. Heaving a sigh, Chance rubbed his cheek hoping that the feeling would help awaken his senses. She didn’t seem like the type of woman to be slow on the draw around. “More’r less. I ain’t been ‘round these parts in ‘bout 12 years apart from my little sister’s graduation.” Extending a hand, Chance paused to look at the woman before him. She looked a bit younger than him -- and he knew better than to ask her age. “Chance Duvall. Ringin’ any bells? Maybe I parked your ol’ man’s car all those years ago when I was a valet?” Chance couldn’t help but smirk at those horrible days as a 17 year old, serving the wealthy and trying not to get caught speeding in someone else’s luxurious car. In all honesty, Chance felt like he would have remembered if he knew a girl that looked like the one before him in high school. Perhaps it was the liquor in his system, but boy was he trying to rack his brain.

He gave him a smile in return of his cents, he was going to buy something nice for his sister with all the money he made while he was there. “Love’s in Need of Love…I know it” He told him and smiled as he started playing. “You like Stevie Wonder?”
Chance hummed in approval of the musical genius. “I respect any gent who can bare their soul like that.” Taking another look at the young man before him, he questioned, “ ‘Ey, boss, are you Grace’s brother?”
suzythepark:
She snorted and shook her head “Who the Bakers? Of course I would never let them starve, Ms. Baker always gives me pie on my birthday” Suzy was speaking of a fellow neighbor of them. “Hey I’m innocent! She exclaimed before shaking her head at his question “No to painting and yes to cooking and a big fat no to the last one” A smile appeared on her face as she spoke of something she loved with all her heart “I dance, that’s my talent.” Suzy answered him, it was weird to be getting along since they had never been able to do so before.
“Pie?” A whistle cut through the air. “The only thing the Bakers ever gave me was a hard time.” Crossing his arms, he couldn’t help but think about how pie would definitely hit the spot in this moment. Chance could have asked her about her cooking talent -- mostly because he felt that his stomach would start grumbling at the thought any time now, but watching how her eyes lit up as she only mentioned dancing intrigued him. “Is that so?” Taking a step back, he gestured toward the open space around them. “Show me a lil’ somethin’.”
