"ah ..." he remains in place; positioned between book stand and their latest ally—even if his chin does succumb to a slight tilt away from the inbound gaze as if shying away from such intense ( and by all means unaccustomed ) attention.

"—a fine question. alas, our spirits are complex and invite such instances where the stars would not know more than what we already know ourselves. put plain, matters of good and evil can become quite diluted under the gaze of celestial forces and we are bound to reap little benefit from posing questions tied to personal allegiances."

head tilts lightly and one hand rises to gently smoothen a particularly stubborn fold out of the crevices of his hood while a small ( and if hesitant ) smile seizes his lips. "... perhaps 'tis a matter of comfort and habit combined. i appreciate thy concern—but i shall refrain from indulging in new garments for the time being. there is too much work to be done and, as thou witness, my current appearance poses no hindrance to our conversing."

"few are those without secrets, my friend." he lowers the heavy tome that'd been nested atop his palms for the past few hours or so onto the wooden book stand before him. the interruption isn't unwelcome—even if it is tinged with an accusatory flavor. "thou wouldst find that even the clearest of skies are afflicted with unfathomable depths in the realms beyond our vision. their untold stories however do say little about their intents ... nor about those of our companions."

he pauses; then tilts his head. a frown that remains indiscernible beneath the shadow of his hood yet carries over clearly into his voice. "... that being said, i fail to see what of my garments causes such affront? they have been most beneficial in this arid environment."

uri*anger getting his hands rekt somehow and tricking ( or failing to trick ) other people into helping him out with tasks that would require him to use them :) with potentially hilarious consequences.

i like the idea of uri*anger growing up being clumsy at almost everything he does ( and let’s be honest he sort of still is? when it comes to trying out new things ). and moen’s instinct to be protective as a knee-jerk reaction ( perhaps a few other characters too? ). like he’s not been a good fighter initially. or good at understanding people. or good at communicating. or good at something as menial as cooking. but he’s good at continuing to try his best and keep at things in spite of failures. could be that he’s a good scholar at a young age because it’s one of the things you can practice easily and constantly without having to expose yourself to the judgment of others? he’s certainly decent at cooking now —and much better at assessing people’s intentions and feelings ( though mostly for those he knows well ). he still sucks a bit at walking on water but he’s not giving up and getting there. i think the reason he’s endearing as a character is because he’s a tryhard in the purest, most innocent sense.

            ❝ aha! to be granted a first glance of the masterwork in progress! i near feel taken back to those long nights at the studium—when halls were filled in spite of late hours with students assessing one another's works prior to sending it off. ❞

           suffice it to say, neither of them were quite the type to relate to the struggles of last-minute work. if he'd been up at such times, it was due to his personal inability to tear himself away from his tomes while in the midst of enticing readings—not forgotten deadlines. ever has he regarded his fellow students' efforts with some notable interest from afar, though, envying them not for their self-imposed pressure ... but certainly for their communal liaison. in a way, he's getting his chance now; although it's likely there's scarce need for critique and far more room for mental enjoyment.

             accordingly, he's treated the rough draft with due care and attention; made sure to get comfortable in his favorite wooden reading chair along with a cup of tea for them each, and set the mood with habitual dramaturgy. ❝ i take that it's my privilege to impose upon the author herself whatever questions may spring to my amateurish mind as i read on ... ? that said, do leave me to my devices as necessary. i shall find thee later to pry answers from thy capable hands in any case. ❞

              particularly with the latest household addition kept in mind, the dragoon's ... habits are slowly beginning to assume outright concerning ( if not disturbing ) dimensions. ❝ —prithee ... for what reasons dost thou experience such aversion against smaller creatures? surely there must be a way to conciliate their ... intimidating (?) guise with thy well-founded fears. if thou wouldst confide in me, we might find relief for thee yet. ❞

        Mayhap it has something to do with the way the archon seems veritably close to tears, yet he begins to suspect the elezen’s not fond of the way he tanks.

              he gazes at the other man with a decidedly pained expression that seems to say ‘it’s not you, really, it’s your health bar (dropping at the speed of a red chocobo meteor), his own long cooldowns and, perhaps, just a little bit you, but surely much more himself as whatever the case there must be something that can be done to alleviate your reckless tendencies’.

             ❝ ... ? ❞ the lack of explanation is troubling, of course ( above all because his experience with such vulnerable creatures is limited at best )—and even if he's not one to doubt the archon's judgment, he cannot help but feel that in this instance, her faith is misplaced; her expectations, whatever they may entail, misinformed. ❝ rest assured that i shall see her fed and looked after, ... but for what reason ... ? ❞ ... ... before he can finish his train of thought, it is derailed by the sensation of a fluffy creature flattening in his arms and the simple realization that the kitchen must surely hold some fresh vegetable as of yet.

OBSERVE

       the young girl had been wailing, roadside and alone; with no family in sight and gruesome bruises covering her knees. non-fatal, of course—cobblestone is unfit of villainy to such degree, even if anyone who's ever had the displeasure of tripping over its cracks would like to tell another tale. having left for a moment to inquire about the child's caretaker's whereabouts, he's relieved but not surprised to find his companion yet tending to her woes upon his return. practiced hands that must've finished casting soothing magicks by now have long busied themselves with tenderly wrapping the sore patches of her legs with woven bandage. the man's focus conjures a smile onto his lips. in a world torn by war and disaster there are so very few people left who understand what it means to care in a way thorough enough to leave fragile souls feel a little less lost. ( yet, he knows just as well how easy it is to lose oneself somewhere down the path of self-sacrifice ).

      it is this afterthought that makes the following silence all the more sweet. the girl had stopped crying and instead, unable or unwilling to move, taken to begging for a ride on the au ra's broad back. he finds himself hoping that he would grant her this joy; and if only because the weight of gratitude clinging to his ribs frame may do wonders to resolve the frown that is sitting steadfast in between his brows. he takes another step to close the distance between them; good tides waiting atop his tongue along with the quiet wish that their road next shared would be a gentle one.
