On June 24th, 2022, I was on the train heading to downtown Chicago with my Dad. We were both going to our first ever Dead & Company concert. But on June 24th, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Women of all ages were on that train, already gripping protest signs, ready to fight for their rights. I remember being unable to comprehend what this truly meant for women, but I knew the future was dark. Looking back, my memories of that train ride are surreal. Train hurtling through the outskirts of Chicago, protestors patiently waiting at the doors to flood the streets. Sadly, it was real life. The U.S. Supreme Court stripped reproductive rights away. It was official.
However, during the concert, Dead & Company displayed images supporting women's rights and abortion access on the big screens, and it planted a seed of hope within me that night. I mean, to be at a Dead & Co. concert is one thing, but to be at a Dead & Co. concert while also supporting reproductive freedom?! That is awesome!
Anyway, I am writing this today because it looks like Proposal 3, which guarantees reproductive freedom in the state of Michigan, is on track to be added to the state constitution. However, the votes are currently 55% yes and 45% no...this goes to show that every vote, every voice, every person matters in this debate! Share your opinion! Participate in the democracy that we have the privilege to live in! I am not usually one to share my opinion online, I never saw the point. But, the severity of the implications of the issue at hand and this community on Tumblr has encouraged me to take part and to take action, and I hope you do, too!
