Juliet chuckled for a moment before quickly covering her mouth “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.. You probably get tired of people doing that.” She chewed on her lower lip for a moment to stifle her laughter. She felt a little embarrassed, here she was insulting a woman she had just met. Great way to make a first impression. “Oh you have a daughter? How old is she?” Juliet asked half trying to change the subject and half out of curiosity.  

“oh, you’re fine --- i don’t mind jokes. every once in a while i hear one i’ve never heard before. i have a twenty minute long vlog about jokes i’ve heard. i’ve always been little, so i kind of grew up knowing that there would be short jokes probably for the rest of my life and i’m fine with it. i’ve never had my feelings hurt by someone pointing out the obvious. my own little brother calls me early onset osteoporosis as a nickname,” she said with a small laugh. “she just turned six on christmas. i feel like she was just born and now she’s half way grown up.”

Now that Juliet had someone to talk to she felt a little less lonely and a little more comfortable. Her gaze swept freely over the crowd now, smiling softly at all the couples, friends and families celebrating the end of the year. Juliet knew her wife would be wondering where she was and she felt slightly guilty that they wouldn’t be ringing in the new year together, but she had hated that party they’d been at. All the attendees had been trying to outdo each other in the amount of wealth they could display just on their bodies and it had made Juliet feel quite ill. She looked down at her own dress and even though it was fairly expensive, it was probably a quarter of the price that she had seen others wearing. “They must look beautiful. I’m sure he’s not annoyed at you for having to hang the lights up, I hang things up for my wife all the time and I don’t mind at all. Ouch, that must have still hurt though falling from a ladder onto your elbow. Have you gotten up on a ladder since?” 

ursula nodded. hell yeah, she still got up on ladders. she was too short to reach anything. "yeah. i'm short. i practically have to use a ladder to get into bed. he pokes fun at me about it all the time. hell, our daughter does too. another couple years, she'll probably be taller than me before she hits her teens," she said. she'd always been the little one. she was smaller than her little brother --- which was insulting, especially since he could use her as a human arm rest.

Juliet had snuck out of the party she`d been at early, everyone had been getting too drunk for her liking and she had ended wandering aimlessly for a while, watching the passerby’s having fun and enjoying themselves. She had ended up in Times Square of all places, and even though big crowds made her extremely nervous, she had stayed. Juliet realised that even she had lived in New York for years she had actually never seen the ball drop. She stuck to the edges of crowd not game enough to get closer for a chance at a better view. At the sound of the woman’s voice next to her she turned slightly “I love them too, coloured lights make me so peaceful somehow.. I’ll be sad when they take them down,” she said with a sigh “Maybe you steal a strand or two so you could always feel like a little kid.” 

although she'd probably end up at a party later on due to a sibling or friend dragging her to have a good time, she was definitely staying until the ball dropped. she'd only been able to actually watch it in person a couple of times in her life. once was during her senior year of high school. the school arranged it as a winter break senior trip. once was when scout was just a few years old, and tonight. she usually let scout stay up past midnight, but being that she was being babysat, she made her go to bed early --- but knew that the sitter would probably let her stay up. she did make the rules very clear though; if scout were to stay up to watch the ball drop, she was to be in bed by at least 12:30 so she didn't have to deal with a cranky six-year-old the next day. "i have a ton at my place. everywhere. i kinda feel bad for my husband, he's the one that had to put them all up. i told him i would do it, but once you fall off a ladder, you can never be trusted to hang lights again. spent seven hours in the emergency room just for a doctor to examine my elbow for two minutes and say it was just sprained."

ursula's knuckles knocked at the door as she leaned against the wall. sure, she was early, but honestly --- how long could it take a guy to get ready? "c'mon, we're missing half the good stuff," she called out. "can you at least open the door so i can pee, i have a small bladder and i drank a water bottle on the way over," she said. that was a lie. she downed an entire starbucks doubleshot so she'd have energy to actually have fun tonight.

after searching and searching through her contacts to find a sitter for scout, she finally found someone reliable that had watched her for ursula and remembered that scout really liked her. so once she got it set up for the sitter to come over, she got scout ready for bed, and then herself ready to go out to times square, which meant thermal leggings under her jeans, thin socks to go under the wool ones, a pair of weather proof boots that her fiancee got her for christmas because he was tired of hearing how her feet were always cold, three --- yes, three thin long sleeved shirts, a pull over sweater, a winter jacket (that was cute, not a puffy one), and a scarf that she'd end up taking off because she didn't like anything around her neck. once she was all situated and the sitter got there, she made her way to times square and actually had a good time. everything was pretty and colorful and it just felt like christmas, as it should during christmas time. "i feel like a little kid again," she said. "i think it's something about the lights. i like lights. i like anything shiny, but colored lights --- i could live with that for the rest of my life."

if there was one undeniable truth about the city ( and most places ), it was that with the right amount of money there was no such a thing as laws and rules, which happened to be the reason the seventeen-year-old strode through the very 21+ 𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐛𝐲’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 with a half-filled glass like he owned the place. “it’s a good try, i suppose, but i think jay would still be underwhelmed,” he mused. it seemed the boy was never satisfied. “at least they’re keeping the alcohol coming,” he added with a smirk, downing the rest of his own.  

she wanted to be enjoying herself more, but her social awkwardness was at an all time high. she was awkward in general. she had a touch of social anxiety that could get really bad at times, which is why she chose to work from home and do her own thing without having to sit in an office surrounded by hundreds of other coworkers. at the other’s voice, she looked at him for a few seconds. “...who’s jay?” she asked.

          ❛ ❪ ♡ ;   kaia kept to the outskirts of the room , a champagne flute sitting delicately between her fingers , gaze fixed out the floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the bright lights of the city . kaia did not care for parties . she was only here because her father was in another room , behind closed doors , negotiating deals . a sigh escaped her lips .   ‘   i want to gauge my eyes out .   ’   she spoke to herself , gaze never leaving the window . 

“honestly, almost same,” she said. it wasn’t that the party was bad, it just wasn’t necessarily her style. it was more on the boring side. “should’ve hung out in time square instead. did i use that right?” she asked. “hung... hanged...” she never was good with words that had more than one tense. she also never knew how to use ‘drunk’ or ‘drank’ so she tried to avoid them altogether.

“i know i did! but that was before joey had to work and my sitter is out of town --- who am i supposed to ask to watch her? the ferret?” she asked, snapping her fingers as scout ran by the doorway. “jammies! right now, don’t make me tell you again,” she called out. “i don’t know who else to call.”

"i wanna be twenty-nine forever. that's how old anna's mommy is and she says she's the boss of everyone at the studio," scout said. "yeah well uh... anna's mommy? is not twenty-nine, she's in her forties. and she's not 'the boss' of anybody at that studio, she's just the oldest. being older doesn't make her special or powerful, so you remember that. and stay away from that woman, i don't like her," ursula said, her nose scrunching at just the thought of the lady. "oh, she'll love it. hell, i'll love it, i love places like that," she said. "you have to come, it won't be no fun with just me and mommy cause daddy doesn't get to go and mommy won't have a baby so i can have a friend," scout said. "mommy won't have a baby because what time does daddy have to make one when he's always on the field? you talk to your daddy about a brother or a sister and we'll talk more when you establish a plan on how this baby's gonna be created --- until then, enough with the baby talk and go get in the car so auntie can get what she needs."

     ❛ ❪ ♡ ;   an actual laugh escaped the dark haired female’s lips when she got the other all riled up . she found it funny to play with people’s emotions .  ‘  oh , yeah . that makes sense now .  ’  the female nodded , feigning a look of recognition .  ‘  there’s something about you that screams ‘ mommy & daddy issues ’ . you think that you escaped it , that you came out better on the other side . but it’s still there . it never leaves you . you don’t have to listen to anything that i have to say . i’m not going to be butt hurt over it . but you should listen to the psychology . people who experience the problems as a child have a greater chance of mimicking that behavior as an adult . the stats are against you , darling . it’s cute that you think you have any say in the matter . ’  the truth of the matter was that kaia was very familiar with the evans’ family . she was acting as if she didn’t know who the girl in front of her was , but she did . it was just amusing for kaia to mess with the evans child . 

“i’ve already beat the odds. not everyone ends up like their parents. i’m not gonna do what those deadbeats did. i’m not that low,” her brows furrowed, crossing her arms with a sigh. “i’m sorry i snapped at you, they’re a touchy subject... i don’t care what psychology says, though. i’m better than them. i’ll never leave my baby.”

“i’m not gonna take parenting advice from a kid. let me worry about how she ends up, alright? i’d rather have a spoiled kid than one that thinks i don’t think anything of her or feel like her mother never paid attention to her or thought she never did a good job with anything. so if i have to fake a laugh and tell her that her stupid six-year-old jokes are the funniest jokes i’ve ever heard, then i’m gonna do that so she doesn’t feel like she amounts to nothing because mommy didn’t think she was funny. i went through my mother not caring and it sucks,” she said sternly. “when you have kids, raise them however the hell you want, but do not preach to me about how a parent raises their child reflects on them, because that’s not how it happens in all cases. my parents gave up on me --- i don’t give up on anything. i did the exact opposite of how i was raised. worry about yourself, not the fact that i laugh at my kid’s jokes to make her feel like she’s the best comedian in the world. kids need to be lifted up, not torn down.”

hot i’d have to go with the yummy james miller, ursula evans, iris kim & rowan olsen is pretty darn cute too !! not, hmmm mayor aldridge isn’t really my cup of tea, gunner jones too, & ivy upton too !!
