I have a lot of thoughts about Canto 8 that I don't think I could put into words, but it is genuinely so beautiful. It stands in stark contrast to previous cantos in how it evokes feelings in the player. It's melancholic and more subdued, yet doesn't fall flat. While playing through the canto, especially part 3, I kept expecting to feel underwhelmed by how little "stuff" was going on, yet I was blown away every time.

One of the things I love most, however, is how normal Hong Lu turned out to be. The story of DotRC led all of us to believe in some sort of supernatural origin for him, some sort of otherworldly nature that made him so special. I was so, so into all the different theories people came up with for his deal, his backstory, the purpose of his jade eye.

And yet, it was ultimately so satisfying to learn that the truth was so simple and mundane compared to what I had thought. Jia Baoyu is, ultimately, just a regular person. The jade eye is little more than a window for the elders to view and experience the outside world. No Singularities, no stars, nothing.

It's something very touching and poetic. In the end, Jia Baoyu wasn't fundamentally different from everyone else. His status as the "gem of the Jia family" wasn't something innate to him but was rather bestowed upon him. Just a regular human who was denied humanity.

Canto 8 is about Hong Lu rediscovering his humanity — something he had always possessed yet was never able to acknowledge.
