Humpback whale calf close up!

A few months old humpback whale approaching with nonchalance.

In the end of the breeding season in the waters of Salt Cay, many calves are already much bigger than at birth and get close to 6 to 7 meters in length. They need to keep swimming and playing in order to improve their stamina before they start the long journey north to their summer feeding grounds. Females usually hover close to the bottom to save energy. This is typically the easiest group of whales to approach and observe. This clip shot in the end of March 2015 shows an active and playful calf getting curious after it spotted us in the water . As she comes (you can see it is a young female by the bump next to the genital slit), it is easy to realise she is quite nonchalant , rolling at the surface. Although a very close encounter, the latter lasted just a few seconds as the calf kept us away by a tail slap before returning to her mother.

Saba Island, hidden gem of the Caribbean

Located in the middle of the Caribbean, Saba is a tiny island, nonetheless worth a trip, even for a few days. Known as the unspoiled queen of the Caribbean, it hosts surprising tropical rainforest, a myriad of birds and iguanas, and its waters are amazing for scuba diving. With limited tourism, it is still a wild haven to visit and spend a few days chilling in the wilderness!
